Messi offered Barcelona to play for half the money of his previous contract but they were 1.8 billion in debt so they had to cut alot of expensive players to prevent the club from going bankrupt, Barcelona has by far the highest debts of any football team in the world.

La Liga has a salary cap and they were way beyond it along with debt from the previous regime. Worst part is he was willing to take a pay cut but there is also a rule in la Liga that no players contract renewal can be less than half of their previous salary, add in the salary cap and debt and it was a mix of reasons as to why it was impossible for him to stay

Barcelona spent all the money it earned with Messi´s help on very expensive but bad players, who replaced the ggod, aging ones... Messi was at the end playing in Barcelona alone, often turning bad games in Barcelons´s favor all alone (from 0-1 to 2-1 in 90 seconds after he steps on the field, for example), but that couldn´t go for ever, since the club went nearly bankrupt at the end, and they had to sell him, in order to fix the finances... and has dedicated every single of his goals (over 800, just 25 less than Ronaldo) to his beloved grandma in heaven (by pointing wth the fingers towards the sky, after every goal). Ronaldo has done nothing but scoring in his career, mostly tap-ins, when a pin-point-precise-assist comes, and all you have to do is simply to stretch your leg, in order to score. Ronaldo´s shot is the strongest, by the way, but his average from long distance is below average, but he shoots a lot, so, he scores a lot from distance too...

Messi had to leave Barcelona because La Liga arbitrarily added a salary cap that's revenue based, and between COVID and the previous Barca president blowing the club's financial situation, they couldn't register him to play for the next year, even if he were willing to do it for free. Messi wanted to finish his club career (in Europe at least) in Barca, but La Liga's rules (which I think were implemented to favor Real Madrid, cause you know, bs) forced him to leave. Still think the la liga head should go to jail for his bullshit, frankly.
