American Sign Language (ASL) Lesson 44: Taught by Dr. Bill Vicars who is Deaf/hh. He holds an earned doctorate (accredited) in Deaf Studies from Lamar University in Texas and teaches Deaf Studies and ASL full-time (as of this post) as an tenured full-Professor at a major four-year state university.) These videos do not use sound. The lessons are taught without voice. If the signing seems fast you are encouraged to first study the lessons at www.Lifeprint.com and then come back and watch the video. Michelle is an actual ASL student volunteer. You can learn along with her as she progresses. For additional lessons and signing information, visit Lifeprint.com.

Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

On the word "ride" why do you make her use the other hand? What if she's left handed...

If she were left-handed, it would be ok, but she's been using her right hand for everything else, so she is most likely right-handed.

Hi Dr. Bill again! I hope you are doing great!! :) So I am reviewing your wonderful lessons. My question is when you sign SMOOTH on 41.10 isn't that the sign for SOLVE or DISSOLVE too?! I am having doubts! THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE. By the way, I am enjoying your NEW lessons. I very much appreciate it :D :D . You make them so much fun to learn. Keeps me addicted to learning more.

@Bill Vicars I really enjoy your videos, I do have a question about what's the difference between the sign you did in this video for computer placing C on your forehead and the sign you did for Columbus in a different video?
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
The version of "computer" that taps a C on the forehead is a multiple meaning sign. It literally means two different things (computer and/or Columbus) and is differentiated only by context and/or some people add a bit of mouth movement. I do not at all recommend using the forehead version of computer anymore. It is good to tuck away in the back of your brain in-case you see it but other than that just stick with the wrist version or whatever version is used by your local Deaf community. Also see: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/c/computer.htm

Not sure if you get benefit from all sales at teespring but just making you aware. I bought a pair of leggings amongst some other things to make a donation but was sent the wrong thing and cannot get them to respond back so I can get the proper sign language leggings. But hopefully you will still get what you have coming. 💕💕💕

Debra! Gah! You'd think it wouldn't be that hard to match an address and a product eh? Well, that is one vote against TeeSpring! They are unfortunately the only vendor I've seen that is integrated with KZbin (actually lists stuff under the videos). Hey, here's my contact page: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/contact.htm Email me and give me the opportunity to provide you some alternate value. Heh. Plus, thanks for the support! - Dr. Bill

The signs 'Ruined' and 'joking/teasing' look similar.. are the signs truly similar? If so, does the sign change because of the facial expression?
@sign-language
@sign-language Жыл бұрын
The sign for "ruined" tends to do a different movement (from tease). The movement of the sign RUIN could be described as similar to a motorbike popping a wheelie. The dominant X hand slides / scrapes along the top / thumb-side of the non-dominant X hand and then the crooked index finger pops upward (while the base of the X hand continues sliding forward (still in contact with the non-dominant hand). For more information, see: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/r/ruin.htm

Regarding Canadian signs I recommend you ask members of the Canadian Deaf Community. (Do a few searches for Deaf coffee socials in your area.) I can tell you the various ways you will see signs here in America but since I haven't spent any time in Canada I'd best not speculate. However, I can recommend to you this book: "The Canadian Dictionary of ASL." See: www.amazon.com/Canadian-Dictionary-ASL-Carole-Bailey/dp/0888643004 I've had a chance to look it over and it is top notch.

At 7:21 the sign Bill does (with his left palm up and his dominant hand in the F handshape placed on his Left palm) does this mean: choose/pick?
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 жыл бұрын
Yup. That is one of several versions of choose/pick. Caution though, if you do the thumb-side of the dominant hand making full contact (as opposed to angled contact) with the non-dominant palm the sign can mean: Get an "F" grade / fail a course. See tip 4 and / or tip 5 below to look up the word "choose" and then look up "F grade." Compare: Choose: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXfKZ5uYmLSWjLs versus "F" grade: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJDFY3mCgL2Ha7c ============================ How to use ASL University to learn sign language for free: 1. Try freezing it on that frame (use your space bar and or your period or comma key to advance frame by frame. Note that it is a V on an index finger. That is one of the signs for "vocabulary." See: Vocabulary: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH2xaXqYfMirmNk Then I show another sign for vocabulary which is the sign for "word" repeated several times (moving downward as if showing a list). Taiwan was so impressive to me -- it never occurred to me to think of it as an island. In my mind it was a "destination" -- a magical place! You are, of course, most certainly right! Taiwan is surrounded by water! I think maybe if I had spent time on the beach my experience would have been different but I was very focused on the amazing buildings, locations, and wonderful people throughout Taipei. Having visited Taipei, Taiwan is one of my favorite memories! Thanks for commenting!
