Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. You can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here right now and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Finished all 60 lessons, and I just want to say "thank you" to Dr. Bill and all of his assistances. I know these videos are up to five years old, but the information is timeless. I cannot thank all of you enough for the much appreciated and valuable lessons. I hope everyone of the assistances are having a successful and blessed career in ASL. Maybe bring them back for a "Where are they now?" video. Dr. Bill, no words can describe your importance to the ASL learning community. Happy Signing to all.

Thanks Rich! I appreciate the nice feedback. I certainly don't "feel" important (my wife helps out with that) but I do enjoy working and feeling useful. I wish it were true that the information is "timeless." Language (every living language) continues its inexorable (impossible to stop or prevent) evolution. I think though that indeed the videos will be of value for at least "a generation" Which is to say that all of the Deaf folks alive right now "today" will generally recognize and understand the vast majority of versions of signs that are in the videos on this channel. Then as time goes on some signs will evolve a bit here and there. The older signs will still valuable to know though (particularly for interpreters) for the times when you meet and interact with someone who uses those signs. Language evolution is one of the reasons why I like having a website (lifeprint.com) in addition to a KZbin channel -- because I can add context and updates to the lessons and / or individual signs over at the website. Again though, thanks!

I live in an area where the access to ASL education is extremely limited (I've already taken the 2 classes available) and I don't know a single person I can sign with. Without your videos I 100% would not have had the motivation to continue learning ASL. I chalk it up entirely to the availability of these wonderful classes. Thank you so much for making this available. I had so much fun taking these classes and I'm sure I'll continue to have fun going into the other playlists you have available.

Aw man, I've come to the end! Thanks AGAIN for all of these videos and for all of your effort. I have enrolled in ASL classes at my local community college for the fall session (I've been scraping up the cash for a couple of months now) and I would never have felt excited enough nor confident enough to do so without these videos helping me along. I know the classes will give me the extra push to engage with the deaf community. I'm terribly socially anxious as it is, so speaking with people who have a different native language is extra scary, but I'm ready to push myself. If I could bake you cookies and send them to you, I would.

Bill!! after starting my obsession and fascination with sign language in 2019 i can proudly say that i finally finished the 4 asl playlists!! i feel so excited and happy!! you’re honestly the BEST teacher i’ve ever seen (no matter what subject) and i genuinely don’t know how people aren’t using your method of teaching for.. well, everything else! other languages, other sign languages! Everything feels so easy and understandable with you, and you always keep our attention! I’m just happy i found you, and i really hope i’ll be able to use this skill one day! I really wish my hearing friends were willing to learn sign with me, but i wouldn’t want to force them (and that seems to be the only way :( for now at least). PAH! I have finally finished watching and studying all of your lessons for almost 8 months now. I started learning ASL to be able to communicate with my girlfriend's deaf parents. We have been dating for a little over a year now and I was worried about how I was going to ask her dad for his blessing. However, from watching your videos and intensely following the lessons with tons of practice I was able to communicate with them fully with no issue. I really feel like I have been able to establish a relationship with them. We had dinner last week (It was just her mom and dad and me) and They said they would give me their blessing! Thank you for all of your videos and resources, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish something like this if it wasn't for your teaching ability and as an added bonus, your sense of humor.

Finally finished ASL 1-4, which feels like a huge accomplishment! I've rewatched most of the videos on my journey here and have many rewatchings + new vids to explore. Several years of review, practice, stopping and starting to get to Lesson 60. Donated twice - I don't know how else to show my thanks for this tremendous gift. My favorite helper: Donovan. My favorite technique: When Dr. V does exaggerated slow motion of lexicalized sign (I think that is a bit magical to watch). There have been several questions about fluency after watching the series. While I am far from fluent, I am definitely able to make myself understood. My biggest success was when a Deaf woman came to my library. From your site and lessons, I knew just what to do to let her know I had some signing skills. I was able to help her get registered, a new card, and even a book recommendation -- all via signing. Perfect ASL it was not. But it was amazing to apply all that I learned to make someone feel welcome in my library. I cannot thank you enough for making this available. Master playlist, here I come!

Congratulations! Good job on completing ASL 1 - 4! Just brainstorming here: Since you are at a library, it would be interesting to try setting up a no-voice ASL meetup on a regular basis and whoever shows up would watch one of the playlist videos with you. Meaning, if you plan on watching the videos anyway it would be fun to have others to watch with and possibly practice some of the sentences with afterward. A way to generate attendance would be to print several copies of an advertisement for the meetup and stick one in each of your ASL books on the shelf at the library. That way people who come in looking for ASL materials will become aware that there is a meet-up. I recommend keeping it strictly no voice but maybe have a white-board available to smooth out communication for newbies. Who knows? Maybe the endeavor will be a fail. On the "other hand" it might become a lot of fun and allow you to meet other people interested in signing. Also maybe set up a small bulletin board where you would post upcoming Deaf events in your area. (Which you can sometimes find by googling "Deaf Events near me" and/or "ASL Socials near me." Or do a Facebook search for the name of your city and Deaf -- or the name of your city and ASL. Again, though, "Yay!" to you for successfully making it through ASL 4 and having a conversation with a Deaf person!

My problem is I dont have anyone else who knows ASL that I can communicate with or practice to start enhancing my receiving skills. What would you recommend to someone who knows the signs but is looking for a way to practice reading signs from other people to make conversations easier when they do arise. I am not learning ASL to communicate with anyone in particular, just always wanted to learn it.

Mr. Vicars (or any readers), can I ask something? So my family and I go to a store to buy sandwiches and we sign to each other for fun quite a bit, but the problem was that I knew of no way to sign sandwich (this was before I started looking at your ASL Dictionary site), so I just signed what I assumed was close to a sandwich. I used the "on" sign and switched hands about three times to simulate building a sandwich piece by piece. But now that I've seen your instructions on your ASL Dictionary site, I saw that my way was not the correct way to sign it, however I like my version quite a bit. So which one should I use, should I use the one that I don't like as much (the recommended) or the one that I like? Perhaps I could use my sign to mean someone preparing a sandwich?

One more question. Ive never seen the signs you listed for sun. Ive seen sun and moon signed with a C handshape coming from the eye. Moon is a smaller handshape then sun. Is that a regional sign? The deaf here in NYC also sign bus as the doors opening and closing. B handshape
@sign-language
@sign-language 7 жыл бұрын
Those "C" handshape and modified-C-(index-and-thumb)-handshape for MOON signs are well established nationwide. The BUS sign to which you refer would be considered a regional sign. Personally I tend to just spell BUS (less work actually).

At 28:00 I don't understand the question you asked. Were you asking about the rules for communicating with a deaf person?? thank you for these awesome videos..
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 жыл бұрын
The sentence at 28:00 is part of the larger overall lesson having to do with the types of signing that might take place during a discussion of the process of submitting an entry into a storytelling competition. Go here: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lesson60.htm and read through the practice sentences as if they were a story or an announcement.

Hi I have a question about the signs for this and that. Ive been told that those signs are English and shoulnt be used but I see many deaf using them. A coda told me its a big no no though. Can you clarify? I find that hearing people are more dogmatic. I feel like the deaf mix it up alot with their signing.
@sign-language
@sign-language 7 жыл бұрын
Eh? We certainly do sign "this" and "that." However there are some differences in usage between English and ASL. For example, you wouldn't sign "THIS" for "this morning." Instead you'd sign "NOW-MORNING."

You furrow your brow for a WH question or how. You raise your eyebrows for yes or no questions. What do you do if you ask an either/or question?
@sign-language
@sign-language 7 жыл бұрын
Either/Or questions can go "either" way. You can treat "either/or" questions like Y/N questions or you can treat them like WH questions. For example, consider the phrase" "Are you going or staying?" You could phrase that two different ways: 1. Are you going--yes or no? Are you staying yes or no? 2. Are you going or staying, which? If you raise your eyebrows during the question then you are turning it into two "yes or no" questions to which your conversation partner will need to answer by telling you which of the two conditions is corresponds to his "yes" answer.

She is signing a version of "child." What she is telling me is that she used to be more creative (as in "inventing stories") when she was a kid. BEFORE CHILD YES --NOW NOT CREATIVE SAME IX-(index "kid") Or in other words: "Back when I was a kid, yes. These days I'm not inventive like I was when I was a kid."

The sign is "summarize / condense / abbreviate." The usage here is to indicate that the concept "WWW" is abbreviated to WW in ASL. Thus "WW" = "The web" or "web." I have a WW SITE means "I have a website."
