Video accompaniment to the American Sign Museum audio tour. This portion covers the Plastics Era, which begins just after WWII and continues through the 1980s. Of course, we still use plastic in modern signage today due to its flexibility and affordability. Early plastic signage was flat featuring painted graphics and letters on the outer sign-face. A bit later, vacuumed formed plastic signs were made available, offering a greater range of dimension, as well as embossed lettering. In this section, explore early plastic signage, the vacuum forming process, and great examples of large-scale and animated neon.
Enjoy!
