I never got to see Gardner Stone pull the General or Mr. LTL with the Allison's, but was lucky to see him pull The General Stage IV with the turbines many times at Chapel Hill. But thanks to the few guys that are still pulling Allisons, now nearly 40 years after this, and allowing younger folks to see & hear the sound of WWII technology.

The Allison General is still out there making noise on NY state circuits as Zemcik's The Animal.

I saw Gardner pull with twin turbo-Allisons a few times. One of my favorite tractors in the sport of all time. I also saw his quad-turbine tractor, and it pulled great, but it didn't make the beautiful sound of the Allisons.

@@andyharman3022Actually decent until Y2K But it went downhill fast after that. But I'll admit it was better at the time of this pull.

Didn't realize the super stocks were using alcohol way back then.

Some weren't diesel tractors converted to be able to burn alcohol either, carbs and fuel dumping in like a garden hose. You still see some in the light classes at local pulls.

uh... a top fuel dragster runs around 11k Horsepower. these tractors a cool but don't come near that. Not to mention it's an apple to oranges comparison. Tractor pools rely on torque where dragster require both torque and horsepower. Here's a fact for you, a top fuel dragster out runs (is faster than) the space shuttle during launch for the first 1/4 mile. After that the shuttle wins.
@andyharman30222 жыл бұрын
Set your wayback machine to 1984. Top Fuel dragsters were nowhere near 11,000 hp then. More like 5000. Both sports rely on maximum HP to get the job done as fast as possible. You can't have HP without torque.
@redracer1985 Жыл бұрын
Top Fuel was dealing with 3,000 horsepower in '84, and Funny Cars were dealing with about 2,500

Obviously the OP has no clue about farmboy drag racing 😂 there's zero difference between them except the fuel. Nitro isn't allowed and they still generate the HP and torque. Some of the modern diesel SS push 8000 hp using a stock tractor block 😊
@davidmiller9485 Жыл бұрын
@@yougonnaeatthat9889 No the OP was referring to the HP of modern Dragsters. If you want to get into 60's era slingshots then were talking about things like the swamp rat using a 392 Hemi with almost 50 Degrees of advance and a LOT less horsepower. I was just pointing out that nitro was capable of a lot more than some think based on the ratio and engine. (well electronics as well when including modern top fuel racing) Edit: after more thought i might want to explain my comment on the differences between Top Fuel and Full Pull tractors (ie. The cams). The tractors are after torque, and while they use, what is basically direct drive on Top Fuel, they are looking for a more balanced torque to Horsepower ratio. I'm not going to do a dissertation on how torque affects horsepower and horsepower affects torque but it's worth knowing so you can understand how each application chooses it's cam, heads, fuel, electronics, etc. etc.
