Met Americans that had a friend that wanted to visit South Africa and wanted a few tips for her. The ladies plan was to arrive in Johannesburg and start hitch hiking immediately when she landed to explore the city and country. Immediately told them that’s the worst idea I ever heard of. On your own is allready an awful idea. Also outside OR Tambo airport there is not a dirt road leading to an elephant sanctuary with rainbows and zebras frolicking it’s a 3 lane highway in a dangerous area 😂 The absolute ignorance was mind boggling

@@edp3202 Hi. That is a very tough question to answer. I would start with, asking the owners or staff of whatever establishment you end up staying at about risks in the local area. Do your best not to look like a tourist. No big fancy cameras. Use your phone while being aware of your surroundings and stash it back in a pouch that is secured to your body. Never take out cash in public unless it is in a restaurant. Millions have visited South Africa and left with a positive experience. Common sense will take you a long way. We have a lot of beggars here. If you choose to give them something, keep five rand coins in a separate pocket from the rest of your valuables. That is enough to help them out a bit but not enough to make it look like you are rich. Avoid going to restaurants after dark, again depending on where you are and advice from the locals. If you do decide to visit, I'm sure you will find the country full of beauty and lovely people if you just do some research.

I have been through lots of SA, Burkina Faso, DRC, Ivory Coast in a mining job... there are parts of Joburg and Cape Town that i didnt feel safe in a Land Cruiser with large 2 armed guys (friends). In Burkina Faso our work party of 3 was greeted at the airport by a 4 vehicle rolling motorcade, one with a guy standing on the back with a mounted heavy machine gun, loads with rifles and all carrying pistols. Once we started driving and i said to our site contact "what the fk??" he said ISIS were active in the region. As someone who has been to all post-soviet Stans except for Turkmenistan, I need to say something. I don't recommend Tajikistan at all, Kyrgyzstan is only for people who want to go 100 years back in time and breathtaking nature, and Kazakhstan is alright but nothing too special. BUT Uzbekistan is stunning, not for the nature, but the historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva are worth the trip. The locals in Uzbekistan are pretty welcoming, and the new generation also speaks decent English. However, I do recommend learning the basics of Russian before you go, you'll need it eventually. As for safety, the only country I did not feel safe in was Tajikistan. The Kazakh capital also feels odd depending on where you are, but all other places are totally fine. (I went last year)

Once you've done all that go through the slightly less safe places like Bulgaria and Romania etc. Once you've spent a few decades going through the thousands of relatively safe beautiful places...maybe then you can go ahead and consider bad ideas if you're so determined.

@@pistonburner6448 Wow I Googled the Dolomites and wow those are beautiful. I will say though there are very few beautiful things in the world that you can't also see something similar in America. Unless you're super into European history there isn't much you can't see in America. BTW I'm NOT a ra ra 'Murica person. Just saying that if people want to see most of the beautiful things in the world then one BIG trip to America would be pretty amazing. For sure do your research first. I've traveled a little and frankly it's not nearly as dangerous as some seemingly want to believe. Most people just go about their day and don't cause issues. Having said that, when things do go wrong they can go really wrong. Like that Hmong comedian that just got killed in Columbia, tragically (honey trap, kidnapping). Or one of my fellow countrymen (a police officer no less) and his girlfriend who got kidnapped in Pakistan (govt paid 20mil for their release after a few months). Or those two unmarried Australian youtubers who got detained (rather harshly for quite some time) for camping out in their 4wd which they thought would be cool... in Iran. Turns out they don't like unmarried couples sleeping in the same room there. Who would've thought? Most situations can be averted by not being dumb and naive. It used to be very popular to take the hippie trail aka the silk route into India. Hippies did it all the time in the 60s and 70s. Land route via Afghanistan. There's plenty Land Rover enthusiasts who do London to Singapore (or to Sydney) overland. It's quite a classic journey really.

That last video doesn't deserve to have the immortal "Resonance" playing in the background --- the song you direct everyone to when they ask you, "What is synthwave?"

I have lived in 6 foreign countries over the last 25 years and most tourists are stupid not just Americans. If you go to a border the taxi driver was doing you a favor taking you to the closest city and not dropping you off in the middle of nowhere. The world is not like the U.S. where you can just go anywhere. I lived in west Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and I’ve never been robbed. Why because I know where not to go and try to blend if.

I bet ever since Mama Christina found her inner 'Chola' , Tom has been getting shown who the real boss is. Especially while making marital loves. :))
