30 years ago, I ate at least once a month at Nordsee. At my town it was a fish shop with a small eating section. They had a lot of grilled fish and normaly not only the boring fish burger or finger, but different fish like sea bass (Wolfsbarsch) or hoki (Seehecht) and others. It used to be kind of fast restaurant, now almost everything is fried. My best sea food memories is my dad and me sitting at a little fishing habour (one of those north sea towns, ending with -siel), peeling and eating Nordseekrabben (north sea crabs), my dad had bought direct from the boat a few minutes ago.

Fun Fact: I live at the North Sea coast and there is no Nordsee Restaurant here anymore. There used to be one but it wasn't profitable. The reason is obvious: We get so much really fresh and fancy fish in many nice and fancy fish restaurants all around here that we don't need Nordsee. We get Fischbrötchen everywhere and down at the harbor, we have a fish food truck that sells Backfisch which tastes at least twice as good as the one from Nordsee. And it comes in a really nice Brötchen, not the ones that taste like carton paper. However, personally, I prefer fresh fried fish in a good fish restaurant, served with nothing but melted butter and boiled or fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln) or french fries. In April of each year, you get "Maischolle" here in many resaurants, young plaice, and usually it's an all-you-can-eat dish for around 15 Euros. My personal record is 9 of them ;-) And then you have the tourists, of course, who come to a fish restaurant at the North Sea coast and order the "Mediterranean fish plate" ;-)

You know, the company has a really interesting history. It was formed toward the end of the 19th (that's right, 19th) century by a group of fisher and traders who wanted to offer fish to the, well, land people. Originally they were basically selling the fish they caught themselves, even though during World War I a huge chunk of their ships sunk or were claimed by the state (or both). Still, there was a time when more than half of the German ships were fishing just for Nordsee. But I think they sold their fishing segment around 20 years ago. Personally I think they were better when they were less "franchised", but I also think that if you go for fast food (which I do next to never), Nordsee isn't the worst option. Their dishes are tasty enough and certainly not quite as bad for you as most other options.

I love to sit down at Nordsee restaurants, rather than just eating on the go. When you have been running around town for hours sightseeing, or shopping, or running errands, typically your feet get tired after many hours on those cobble stones. Nordsee is always a possibility for a quick bite and a pause. So I am more familiar with their meal selections than I am with either their sandwiches or their fresh fish counter. I rarely buy anything to take home there, but I love to stop for lunch.

You two change and inspire my eating habits so often with your world-wide cuisine videos. z.B. I've got your brand of curry in my Schrank right now. I've always wanted to try NordSee but now I know exactly what to get. Thank you. My thing is, I'd love to make recipes with fish here but I have trouble finding fish without bones. It seems like every package of fish has a disclaimer, "This could have bones." And it's true, they always do. So authentic fish tacos (with lime/cilantro sauce) are out of the question cuz I don't know where to buy fish in Germany without bones. I recently made New England style clam chowder, to which I always include a back-up fish type (jacobsmuscheln/scallops) and another type of fish because I cannot find clams in Germany. Having no luck with bone-free fish, I literally peeled the paniermehl/breading off the freaking Iglo brand Fischstaebchen/fish sticks and threw them into the soup. My husband was amused when I showed him the pile of paniermehl/breading vs the tiny pile of actual fish I'd scavanged out of the coating. There is a Galileo show about this! Anyway...Help? Where do I find clams? Scallops? Miesmuschen without bits of shell that get stuck in your teeth and your intestines? Fish with no bones that are not Iglo brand Fischstaebschen? Thank you.

I live at the Northern Sea here in Germany. So fresh fish here. I try one time "Nordsee" fast food. Oh... Oh... You both was very brave ;)... If a tip is welcome: Try it at the fish marked near the Northern Sea...If you like really fresh fish or "Krabben". Anyway: Sehr sympatische Videos. Vielen, vielen Dank

I miss home. 🌍💚🌼

U.S. here. I wish we had fish options! There's the McFish puck, and Long John Silver's, if you can find one, and ... Usually everyone has a single fish sandwich option, but not like an entire menu! Fried shrimp is OK at Popeye's, but it's not those huge, juicy shrimp you get at specialty shops. I think I'd like everything at Nordsee!

Nordsee earlier this year were advertising a vegan "Visch" Brötchen and "Visch and Chips" when I tried the later they cooked both the Visch piece and the chips - fresh in a separate fryer so I had to wait but it was fresh. Being British I did have to have malt vinegar on my Visch and chips LOL

You said you stopped in as they were opening which sounded early so I expect they had just started up their deep fryers. If not at full temperature 176.7 C / 350 F then you tend to get a greasier product. Was the earlier served items more greasy than the later? Squid Rings - Calamari served with Marinera sauce is name served in Italy and US.
