Stay safe Dee. Europe, especially Eastern Europe (but even Western Europe now) are going through some palpable nationalist phases. Nationalist movements that used to be strictly anti-immigrant scumbaggery, but have now evolved to anti-tourist vibes as well. Oftentimes, historically, tourists get confused as immigrants and caught up in xenophobic issues from locals. Of course, you're gonna find some amazing people in some amazing cities and neighborhoods. Also, this incident may not have even been related to that, *but...* it helps to just be aware of the "climate" of these places we're visiting. Not even sure if the Czech Republic is going through those same issues as many of their surrounding neighbors. But getting caught slipping shouldn't be an option anywhere. At home or abroad. I grew up in Italy and for some trains (not all) it works like that, you have the choice to reserve your sit, which is a little more expensive, and you usually do that when you expect the train to be full or close to full. If you don't reserve anything you can sit wherever, but there is always the chance that you have to give up the sit to someone who has reserved that particular sit, and if the train is full, you might have to stand up entirely until one gets free. In your case, the lady had no rights to your reserved sit for sure, but she also had no rights to the sit you were occupying because up to that point it was still a free sit, which means whoever gets there first sits there. She was full of 💩, and so was he. You did the right thing. Had it been the only free sit left it would have been a different story, in that scenario common sense comes into play, but it wasn't the case, so.

37:56 The guy said in Czech "I’m a guest and it’s just a misunderstanding" which is bullshit cause he should’ve minded the business that pays him. Plus that lady had no right to touch your bag and if it was reserved seating she could’ve easily sat somewhere else on that train..it’s not like it was crowded😭 She just wanted to make a scene and antagonize you.. smh I’m sorry you experienced that Dee but I’m glad you enjoyed your trip.🩷

Okay, let me first of all say that imo you were 100% right in this situation and handled yourself much better than I would have (I hate confrontations) That being said, to be devil's advocate for 1sec, on OBB and DB trains you have to physically claim your seat reservation latest 15 minutes after departure of the train, otherwise you are counted as a 'no show' and the reserved seat becomes free to be taken by anyone. Now, TECHNICALLY, as you were not yourself sitting in that seat but only your backpack - which does not have a 'right' to a seat but technically should be stowed either above or under your seat or at the suitcase rack - that seat became technically 'free' to be claimed by any other passenger with a 1st class ticket. Basically, you technically cannot 'block' seats with your carry-on for your convenience. That's if you're pedantically following the rules. NOW, HOWEVER... In the world of normally socialized and civil/polite people it is absolutely understood in most parts of Europe that while there is space to spread out we will not crowd onto each other but spread out. In a virtually empty train compartment with a free choice with all kinds of seats as you described - with and without tables, window and non-window seats, which is btw. typical for 1st class to stay empty like that - no sane person sits down right next to or right opposite a complete stranger. That is just absolutely psycho behavior. Nobody does that, unless they're literally insane OR... or... they think YOU don't belong into 1st class and they aim at harassing you out of there or at least make your ride as uncomfortable as possible. Now, I don't know about the Czech, as I am German I've only seen this happen in Germany, but I've seen it multiple times that fellow passengers are harassing someone they think can't possibly afford a 1st class ticket. I've seen suit and tie guys literally go to the conductor to demand to check the ticket of some punk looking guy in 1st class whose valid 1st class ticket the conductor had literally just checked. More likely than not that lady clocked you as a) too young, b) too casually dressed and yes, most likely sadly also c) too 'coloured' to have a valid 1st class ticket and wanted to make sure to show you that she belongs there and you don't. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she too left the cart to complain to the ticket guy and ending up in tears over being told your ticket is valid. I kind of have an inkling she also wanted to sit close to you to witness you being told that your ticket is not valid for 1st class and you have to leave. that's just a guess on my part of course, but I find it very likely. The fact that you stood your ground was all the more reason for a hissy-fit. There is a general attitude in big parts of Europe that foreigners (read non-white foreigners) should be extra grateful to be allowed to be there and should be accordingly submissive, appologetic and pliable. That attitude is bad already in Northern Europe but it gets progressively worse the more East you go. So yeah, while 'technically' she could have claimed that seat I am so in awe and glad you stood your ground to this BS. Rules or not, this was targeted harassment plain and simple

For instance, I'm from Montenegro and it is open seating even tho there are numbers on the tickets. However, it is extremely weird that she wanted to sit where your bag was (your reserved seat) when everything else was empty. Maybe she was used to that particular seat or is troubled in some kind of way, idk. Plus if you can apparently sit wherever you want, you sat where you wanted. She can't take it from you LOL. The guy is an incel, obviously. But yeah, very strange. You handled it like a boss.

Im a blk lady from France and it seems she just being a Karen actually. If you reserved the seat it’s yours and people usually try to find isolated seats in open seat trains so she was being annoying for no reason along with that guy. Have a good trip though!

Hi Dee you should definitely visit the Northern Europe. Is so more civilised up there and the definition of personal space is invented there specifically Sweden. People would literally stands up just to not sitt with another person is like a norm. Even if the buss is full they will not sit with you.
@WorldBurial6 күн бұрын
True. But sometimes things happen of course. I once got involved in a big fight with many people on a late night bus. We were all going home after a party, some guys started annoying people, threw stuff, I was one of those who didn't back down and an action movie started 😅

Foreigner in prague here, seats must be reserved in first class! In the other cars not so much but you are paying extra for first class.

i get into these fights on trains all the time. someone took my stuff and moved it and pulled the ticket flap put above. i didnt have a seat after i came back. she teared my ticket off my seat. i could of gotten thrown out. i was the only ethnic person there. good thing i could speak the local language. she brought the train conductor over to fight for my seat.

Even if it's open seating; you dont sit next to or in front of another pax when there is plenty of room. Im probably the third person from the Netherlands to tell you this but overhere; we prefer to keep as much distance from eachother as possible. You dont just sit next to someone when there is room. It hardly happens but sometimes you might get an older person asking if they can sit with you, i.e: have a little chat and you.politeky accept or decline. This lady was out to make you feel uncomfortable and get you to move. As for the guys....typical. a woman travelling alone will always catch some attitude from men. For no reason.
