I actually live in the south western Pfalz and oh boy we are so blessed with wine… pinot Noir I recently enjoyed: Knipser Kirschgarten GG, Friedrich Becker any Pinot Noir, Jülgen Schweigen Pinot, Zotz Pinot Maltesergarten from Baden and for sure Rings Spätburgunder, also Pfalz. They are good at almost every price point:)

Hey, thanks a lot for the shout-out! I didn't have time to watch the full video until now, thanks a lot for the kind words 😊 I freaking love Krebs's style when it comes to Pinot Noir, and they can make "Burgundian" style Pinot from some of their other vineyards. Himmelreich has young vines with Burgundian clones, in their "Gross" wine they do more of a Burgundian expression with Burgundian clones. Himmelreich's reductive style is extremely polarizing, with me on the side that likes it, and I think as long as the fruit is still there it's not a fault. It's not from adding aggressive amounts of sulfur (Krebs is organic, so there are strict limits), but rather a combination of low pH levels, low nutrients for the yeast, and then aging on the lees. The yeast gets stressed and produces reductive sulfur compounds which then carries on to the final wine. This is my understanding from what I've been able to gather from different sources, but it might not be 100% accurate. Reduction is an incredibly complex topic and different winemakers have different ways of explaining how it works and how winemakers achieve it. Unfortunately we don't carry this producer in the restaurant I work in! The owner has a bad history with the importer, so the restaurant will not buy any wines from them. I'm very happy to share their wines whenever I'm able to, and I'm glad you've enjoyed them as well!

Thanks for introducing me! Yes reduction is a complex subject, even alcoholic fermentation itself is reductive in nature. Hope to see you in Feb!

Goldeneye is also a type of duck on the west coast. Mendocino is a cool spot. Spread out, not a lot of foot traffic. Went to a few tasting rooms 2 years back and had a lady in a tasting room tell someone on the phone "I gotta go because I actually have people in my tasting room". Lol

I started with Burgundy wines, but quickly noticed that the prices were going through the roof, so I switched mainly to German Pinot Noir. In my opinion, the entry-level and mid-range wines in particular are tough competition for Burgundy. My favorites are Rudolf Fürst and Bernhard Huber.

I love both styles in fairness and the way the wines change from the Ahr to Baden is just amazing. I really love Pfalz wines with Scheuermann being one of my favourite producers from there.

American PN, particularly from Oregon and Santa Barbara can be quite outstanding. The problem is not much gets exported and the tiny bit that does is usually heavily marked up. German Spatburgunder is one of those countries where you can find decent/good/great quality at all price points. My favorite region is Baden, but I am biased. The Pfalz does make good Pinot Noir as well; I've been lucky and haven't had a "bad" German Spatburgunder yet. Fun fact Himmelreich in English translates to Heaven or Kingdom of Heaven. Cool to hear about great wines that are outside the VDP system, thanks for sharing. Cheers!

I tried the Hunter's Pinot Noir 2022 from Marlborough, New Zealand (you mentioned this area in previous video) and the Ruppertsberger Imperial Pinot Noir Trocken 2021 from Pfalz, Germany and both incredibly delicious (funky to say the least-lots going on here) and the best part both around 20 bucks CAD - WOW! needless to say stocked up 🍷🍷🍷😊😊

You should try the chilean Tara Pinot Noir from the Atacama Desert one day! Just had one of these with friends and it was so different, with salty and even smoky notes added to classic pinot ones! 2020 vintage would be better in a few years, but we couldn´t wait that long

Love California Pinots, including from Ste Rita Hills, but I will be biased and stick with Canadian Pinots from Niagara. Please try a few if you can get your hands on them! Couple to consider include Bachhelder Wilmer-Parke and Mason - The Matriarch!

I’d love to be able to give you are preference but very little of either makes it to Australia. A few reasons: small market (about 25 million people in total). The exchange rate is a killer with both currencies, so most importers just do French as we have a very conservative fine wine market.
