Yes I heard about it a long time ago . I was born in the Azores island of Sao Miguel . My parents moved to Montreal a long time ago when i was a kid .

Are you going to Madeira next? It's beautiful. Very high mountains, very similar to Santo Antão Island in Cape Verde, in natural terms. Of course, greener and much more developed. From Cape Verde, Mindelo.

You really didn't get to see anything. The Azores are unique location. The most important religious festival on the island of Sao Miguel is Santo Cristo. The way you phrased your question about religious practices came across as arrogant and judgmental. That's not going to endear you to Azoreans. It comes across as preachy that won't get you far in Catholic countries.

I lived in Catholic countries for years and dated several Catholic women. I think I'll be fine. If challenging certain religious practices is considered arrogant, so be it. I'm not asking anyone to convert to anything, it's just a stream of consciousness as I walk and talk. You're right, I didn't see much this was a short layover. It was this or stay in the airport, I preferred this.
