People with disabilities make up over 27% of the US population, yet they are severely underrepresented in both psychological science and the larger scientific workforce (Varadaraj et. al., 2021). A major barrier to entering and succeeding the scientific workforce is ableism, the “stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and social oppression toward people with disabilities” (Bogart & Dunn, 2019). A recent NIH report calls attention to the underrepresentation and barriers faced by individuals with disabilities in the biomedical and behavioral research workforce, as well as provides recommendations for making the workforce more inclusive. Join three of the authors of the NIH report, a co-founder of the Disability Advocacy and Research Network (DARN), and a content expert from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to discuss these important topics and the pivotal role psychological science must play in addressing them. This webinar is part of an APA series called “Essential Science Conversations,” where panelists and audience members can engage in open dialogues about emerging topics in psychological science.
