it is the law to open up a lane for emergancy vehicles on the highway as soon as there is a traffic jam. on a 2 lane highway the middle has to be cleared and on more lanes, between the most left and the lane on it's right side as seen in the video has to be clear.

Guess what? That wasn't even a particularly good example of the emergency lane forming. Far too many people didn't get the memo how to do it correctly. The left most lane moves as far left as possible, all other lanes shuffle over to the right and as closely together as possible, including on the hard shoulder. Even on two lanes without a hard shoulder that should leave more than enough space for all emergency vehicles to get through. Nope, you don't make room when you hear the sirens; you form the emergency lane as soon as a traffic jam occurs with fully stopped lanes. Forming it when you hear the sirens is too late already. Edit: listen carefully to 1:57. Here a pissed off German driver of the ambulance curses at the car in front of him with a juicy :"Fahr, du Arschloch!" / "Drive, you a$$hole!" He was majorly pi$$ed off at that driver. That driver didn't even have the excuse of being foreign (German license plate) must have failed at reading in elementary school. Because there are hundreds of placards that give short instructions how and when to form the emergency lane all over the Autobahn bridges at regular intervals. So the ambulance driver was totally right to be pissed off. Then we come to rest, with semis parked in the middle, and cars open up a second lane to the right. Basically anyone in that part on the two right lanes would have failed their driving exam.

It's no miracle - it's the law. If there's a traffic jam, people have to prepare to form a "Rettungsgasse" (saving lane) so they go either right or left to make space in the middle. If German drivers hear the "martinshorn" (St. Martin's horn - the siren) they will swerve to the nearest edge of the road, even in the inner city.
@Moonchild021 сағат бұрын
It's not "either" - there is a law called "rule of thumb" (right thumb): - 1 lane = everyone on the right - 2 lanes = one right, one left (middle "Rettungsgasse") - 3 lanes = two right, one left (more on the left the "Rettungsgasse") (most Autobahn have 2-3 lanes not more but if there were 4 it would be 3 lanes right, one left) Also if there is a jam ahead it is common to use emergancy lights to warn the car behind = usually means you will be going slower .And the car behind should do the same (then you can stop the emergancy lights). That's when you should begin the "Rettungsgasse". You don't have to hear the Martin's horn. But if you do = Rettungsgasse immediatley. And yes, there are billbords that will show "jam" but not always.

You just clear the lane as soon as traffic comes to a stop. The people on the left lane go to the left, everybody else, no matter how many other lanes there are, go to the right. But there's always some idiots that don't do it.

In the top right there's the truck's dispatch number starting with a "HLF" - which means "Hilfeleistungs-Löschfahrzeug" (multi-purpose firetruck - the type that always responds to crashes for oil/fuel leaks or for cutting trapped people out of the wreck...)

To put it into perspective ... The ambulance has been called to an Emergency. What if the emergency is a member of YOUR family ? How are you going to feel, that by delaying the Ambulance attend the emergency ASAP, the casualty dies because EMT treatment got there too late ? Is it so hard and difficult to move to a safe place and let the Ambulance Crew do what they are paid to do, BY THE TAX PAYER !!! and SAVE life/Lives !!!
@uniquename111Күн бұрын
The only thing you need to think about when you see/hear a ambulance, is that it could be your mother, brother, child, wife, husband in that ambulance. You NEVER know and should always consider this and make sure the ambulance will reach where it is going as fast as possible. Anyone not doing so might be the reason to them not reaching the ER and their loved one is dead.
@omanipadmeum7319Күн бұрын
There are no special signs indicating that an ambulance is coming. You can hear them before you see them and at that moment you simply turn left or right to clear the lane, what you were taught in driving school. I think it's important to mention that in Germany you have to get a driver's license worthy of the name! This means twelve double hours of theory lessons for the basic material. Two double lessons of 90 minutes each are added for the additional material. In addition to the basic training according to the contents of the learner driver training regulations, there are 12 special hours in practice for category B which means, for the normal small, medium or luxury car.): 5 overland, 4 highway and 3 in the dark. On average, learner drivers need at least 30 driving lessons, i.e. 15 double lessons. And at the end, a drive with an engineer from the TÜV (technical inspection association), where the slightest mistake leads to the test being aborted and therefore deemed to have been failed and then has to be repeated until it passes! The total cost of a class B driving license in Germany is around 2600 to 3500 euros. By the way, on some sections, mostly in residential areas, there is so-called "whisper concrete". This ensures that driving noise is significantly reduced.

The rescue lane is always formed between the left lane and the lane next to it regardless of how many lanes there are. And how people know they have to form the Rettungsgasse? Well there is a traffic jam and you can hear the siren, that's how.
@franhunne89292 күн бұрын
In Germany it is quite expensive to get a driver's license. You have to go to a driving school, you have to take a certain amount of lectures, you have to pass a written and a practice test - and the person testing you is from the Technical Control Board, acting in an official role there. Germany knows we are a small country (compared to the US), with a lot of inhabitants, some regions are even very crowded. And we still allow people to go on the Autobahn at a very high speed in a lot of places. So we need rules, STRICT rules, to keep the traffic roling and the people in the traffic safe. One is the MOT/Technical Control Board test of your vehicle every second year. One is the driver's license test, finding out, if you know and obey the rules. Those rules save lives!
@evawettergren74922 күн бұрын
We have similar way in Sweden to get a driver's licence... but we do NOT perform this well for emergency vehicles. Don't think we even have the same rules for it. Just some vague "leave room for emergency vehicles" or something.

When there is a law that states that you have to form a "Rettungsgasse" / rescue lane as soon as a jam starts to form in case there is an emergency and rescue is needed, there is no problem in doing so. However, some people do not know where to go. Especially for three-lane roadways, you need to form the emergency lane between the far left and the middle lane.
@Lowlandpiper2 күн бұрын
You talked about driving in the should,... that will only work until the first car is blocking it; either because it has a breakdown or it's simply the road leading to the Autobahn,... which is also blocked because of the traffic jam. And than there is more or less now way out for the emergency vehicle.

Video text is incorrect (not your fault, the original video is also incorrect :) ) This was a firetruck, not an ambulance. That being said, the rules are still the same, wether it's an ambulance, firetruck, or any other emergency vehicle.

Whether or not an ambulance might come you are required by law to clear the space as soon as the traffic slows down and stops. Everyone goes to the right except the left lane. The cars there go to the left and by this, you make space for ambulances and police if they need to pass you by.
@jutswheezie2 күн бұрын
German rule when there is a traffic jam on the autobahn you have to built a Rettungsgasse = rescue lane - all vehicles on the lanes have to move to the right except for the left lane where the vehicles have to move further to the left to create the rescue lane

2:40 you don't know that an ambulance / police / firefighters / a tow truck is coming. You make room for them just in case, as soon as traffic starts to slow down. It's the law. Failing to comply can earn you a heavy fine and a driving disqualification. Although this wasn't the case when this video was recorded (it is rather old, attested by the low video quality)
