Americans Compare Being Gay in Denmark and Being Gay in America
#Denmark #Danmark #GayDenmark
In this video, we take a look at what gay life in Denmark is like based on our experience as a gay couple living in Copenhagen. We compare what it's like being gay in Denmark to being gay in America to celebrate Pride month.
Throughout the video, we share our experiences from the expectations we had as we planned to move to Denmark and the reality once we arrived and began our life in Copenhagen.
We talk about how in Denmark acceptance seems higher simply because conversations are more inclusive with Danes. Things in America are much more heteronormative. This caused us to be curious about LGBT history in Denmark and the march for LGBT rights in Denmark. To learn more on these topics we visited @natmusdk (The National Museum of Denmark) and had a chat with Mette Byriel-Thygesen, one of the museum curators in the exhibit on Modern Denmark.
This helped us put the politics into perspective and the comparison between the politics of LGBT Rights in Denmark vs. America. We talked about the political tactics used by America's Republican party to marginalize LGBTQ+ people, especially transgender Americans. This results in transphobia, murder, homophobia and a higher suicide rate for the community.
Next, we talk about the differences of socializing in the LGBT community and how it was making friends in Denmark (more in this video: • HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS IN... )
Finally, we compare Gay Pride Celebrations in Denmark with Gay Pride Celebrations in America. The main difference being the inclusion of allies and how a more progressive country means there is more civic Pride.

I think Denmark's friendliness towards we Gay people was sorely tested when Prince Joachim's gayness was un-Earthed (sp?) many years back. I have to wonder if Denmark's Royal Family is not closeted in its homophobia, if only because that fam won't even let its own marry people of their own gender.

So I'm a highschool teacher in Southern Jutland, and one day this kid uses "bøsse" (gay) as a slur. Before I even react, another kid gets up and yells "DUDE! IT'S 2020! GAY IS NOT A CURSE WORD!", and the first kid goes "Yeah, no, I'm sorry, I have no idea what I was thinking man.". So yeah, the kids are alright - even in the rural areas ;-)

@@isoooolde > "lebbe" (lesbian) I would translate "lebbe" as "dike". My default assumption (across contexts) is that it's used as a pejorative; it's certainly informal. I would _not_ translate "bøsse" as "fag" or "faggot". I do _not_ have a default assumption about whether it's pejorative or not, because most words can be said with either respect or disrespect. In particular situations it's probably obvious whether it's said with or without respect. For completeness, "lesbisk" is an adjective in Danish. It carries about the same connotations and valences [I read them as value-neutral statements of fact] as the English "lesbian", and is the counterpart to the noun "bøsse". They're the LG of LGBT. It's the proper language for a press release.

I grew up in Denmark and live in Sweden now. My dad, who's 84 years old now explained to me, when I was a little kid, that my cousin was gay. Its actually quite interesting that you use word "natural" (and in fact that the most common argument of homophobic people is "its not natural"). Makes me wonder each time... You see, the conviction that homosexuality is wrong because its "unnatural" derives from cathegory of "divine law" and "the law of nature". "Law of nature" was set of rules of how things work which according to christian philosophy were inherent to each individual being (and each individual being was determined by idea or "formal cause"). All things - and with them their inherent natural laws - were participating in wider set - "the divine rules" or god itself if you will. Its kinda crazy to me that western societies are so immersed in european culture that people even "unconsciously" use arguments from christian philisophy to argue for their believes. Well, even the whole 'sex shame' in fact comes from christian idea of being ashamed of yourself.

I'm an American living in Denmark since 2004 and this is THE best explanation I have seen about our feelings towards gays. I feel like when I meet someone, things like sexual orientation are not important unless you're asking me to have sex with you. If you're vegan, bring that up if we're going out for lunch. These facts about ourselves will come out naturally while we do the "getting to know you" thing. In America someone will introduce themselves, "Hi, I'm Joe. I'm queer gender fluid" and I have NO clue how to respond. Do I applaud or congratulate them...or just stand there? I look for happiness, kindness and compassion in people and that has nothing to do with who you love or what you eat.

I remember taking my boyfriend (now husband) to a family gathering almost twenty years ago. I was so scared, because there would be mostly older people there, I hadn't come out to everyone (I have a large family), and I didn't know how everyone would react. Not a single negative word was said, and no questions raised about the fact that I was gay. Some smaller children asked (respectful) questions about it, and I heard some parents explaining what "gay" meant to their kids. It was such a wonderful day to me, and I felt so embraced from the fact that it wasn't a big deal to anyone!

As a Danish gay I have been very curious about your take on this subject. Personally I only came out about 4 years ago (getting a boyfriend made it kinda hard to hide) and I was very scared about how my family and colleagues would react. In retrospect I now feel kinda silly about keeping it a secret this long (I'm 34. So about 30 years I guess) as I have not been met with a single negative response, everyone has been super nice about it, even strangers. My sister actually started crying of joy just because she was so happy that I finally found someone (gender being irrelevant)

The funny thing is that the Bible tells us that a man may not lie with a man as a man does with a woman. Meaning “the sex thing”. Men, however, do not have vaginas, so it stands to reason that the people writing the Bible thought that anal sex was the way to go with women. Funny how the Bible actually works when you pay attention to the actual text.

I think that Danes are reserved and private people and what you do in your bedroom should be of no concern to other people as long as you don't break the law. I think that's the main reason why Pride isn't as big in Denmark because most people see sexuality as a private matter.

Yes and no. It's true that we are a lot more private in Denmark - it's seen as very weird to talk to strangers on the bus, for instance. But we also have a much more casual relationship with nudity and sex in general. I grew up with boobs in my cartoons(Bennys Badekar), and we've recently had a journalist visiting a swinger club have sex live on the radio. I think Copenhagen Pride is pretty big! It is also true that we generally don't think you should judge/care about what people do in their bedroom as long as it's legal(especially the consensual part).

The boyfriend/girlfriend thing is probably just a natural result of the Danish language. The word "Kæreste" can be ´broken down into: "Kære" meaning "loved one/my dear"; and "-ste": equivalent to "Most or [-est]" in English = "someone's most loved one/dearest"}

@@kimchristiansen2370, @jappedut Be careful about those sorts of translations. Single word translations between Danish and English can, while technically accurate, be quite misleading, because context can change the meaning of a single word significantly in either language. If you want to explain the meaning of Danish words, it's better to actually explain the meaning than to simply give a single English word equivalent. In the case of the four Danish words presented here, better explanations would be: Ven: Friend. Technically a male friend, but is frequently used for both genders, particularly in the plural sense. Veninde: Female friend. Kæreste: Someone you are in a romantic relationship with, but are not married to. Elsker: Someone you are in a sexual relationship with, but no romantic relationship is implied. There are of course more nuances to each of these words than what is described above, but this is a KZbin comment, not a language lecture ;-) In English, the words "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" are particularly troublesome because their meaning is highly context dependent and varies between genders. If a girl talks about her girlfriends (plural) she is almost certainly referring to her female friends. If she talks about her girlfriend (singular) she could mean either just a female friend or her significant other. If she talks about her boyfriend (singular) she is almost certainly talking about her significant other. And if she is talking about her boyfriends (plural), the implication is that she is romantically involved with multiple guys. Generally "boyfriend" is only used to refer to a male romantic partner, while "girlfriend" is used for both romantic partners and female friends, depending on context. This is all just to illustrate why single word translations can be a poor choice. Of course, there are many words that are perfectly "safe" to give single word translations for (e.g. "Dog" = "Hund") because their meaning is simple and not context dependent, but for words as complicated as those describing interpersonal relationships single word translations simply do not suffice. Yes, I am an insufferable know-it-all (even though I absolutely don't know it all). I blame my mother who was a Danish teacher ;-)

Hell we had someone broadcasting from a swinger club and the journalist ended up having sex on live radio. We clearly give no fucks 90% of the time. Not to get political but maybe they need to consider healing the mind before the body. Being a homosexual, gender non conforming woman is not easy not even in Denmark and that has led to a literal epidemic of girls transitioning and sadly detransitioning. Consider reading Abigail Shrier’s book: irreversible damage. No hate to your kid at all but I was in the same position and things could’ve ended really badly.

I am old enough to have witnessed the change. When I was in gymnasium (high school) in the early 80ies coming out as gay was a fairly big deal. In fact, I later learned that two girls from my class had been in a relationship hidden from the rest of us. Now, thankfully, it is much less of a big deal. As danes we are proud of our tolerance. But tolerance towards gays is a recent thing. Well worth celebrating.

Everyone in the family (including grandparents) were like "Ok...so have you found a cute girlfriend or boyfriend yet?" 🤷‍♀️ And that was that, no big deal, because: It is/should be totally frickin normal! (She's dated both genders within a year. U go, girl! 😉) - Fun fact: The US governor under Obama actually married his boyfriend while they were posted in Denmark. ❤️🥰😏👍🥰❤️

Some do use gender neutral words in Denmark though, and unfortunately it is a result of homophobia still being very much a thing in Denmark. It may not be as prevalent as in many other places in the world, but it's still there. I have noticed this several times over the years with various gay people I've come into contact with (colleagues, etc.). Many gay people will, when introduced to new people (such as starting in a new workplace) refrain from using any gender specific words in regards to their significant other. They will meticulously phrase any sentence involving them to exclude these words because they don't want to reveal anything, but they also don't want to lie outright. Danish isn't usually phrased that way, so it quite quickly becomes rather noticeable. I conclude that they do this because they are unsure of how people will react to the fact that they are gay, and further conclude that the reason for this is that they have had unpleasant reactions from some people in the past. One particular example was a girl I worked with in a previous job. I was already working there when she was hired, and she did the whole "no gender specific words" thing. It didn't take long for me to figure out that she was gay, but that was her business and not mine, so I didn't say anything. If she wanted to (attempt) to keep it a secret, it wasn't my place to "out her". All I could do was to make sure, when the topic came up in normal conversation, to make it clear that _I_ wasn't homophobic so she at least knew not to fear _my_ reaction. It took her more than a _year_ to gather the courage to "come out" to us, her colleagues. One day, she had gone out to lunch with her girlfriend, and decided to bring her back to the office to introduce her. It was obvious that this meant a lot to her and that she was very nervous (my colleague, not her girlfriend). So she came in and went: "So, guys, this is my girlfriend [Girlfriend]. So, as you can see, I'm gay". And we were all: "Yeah, we knew. Hi [Girlfriend], good to meet you". After that, she was much more relaxed around us. It was obvious that a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. This is just one example out of many. I think it's really sad that many gay people feel the need to go through this sort of rigmarole, with all that entails. It shouldn't be necessary in this day and age. But the fact that they still do it seems to indicate that it _is_ actually necessary in some cases.

As a queer danish person, this was kinda neat. I don't think we always appreciate how far we have come in such a relatively short amount of time, especially compared to other places in the world. (I try not to be too harsh on the US. We basically shipped all our radical religious people off to the US in the late 1800's early 1900's. (or, they left because they felt europe was becoming too liberal.)) Fun fact, most openly gay politicians in Denmark have been conservative. I think it is time that we take up transgender rights now, and truly fight for their rights to exist. We have come far here as well, especially the younger generations (as a millennial I have high hopes for Gen Z) but maybe that can lead to some complacency as well.

I like that you made a point of mentioning trans people and trans rights. G with the T! I was born in 1978, so I realised I was gay in the 80s - but by the time I was 11 I knew I could dream of if not marriage then at least a civil union with somebody some day. By 2009 the Cathedral of Copenhagen wrapped its columns in rainbow-coloured fabric for Pride, so we knew there were at least some influential people in the Church of Denmark behind our rights. But the last time I attended a gay church wedding... We have the right to get married in our local parish church, but the priest has the right to refuse to officiate, and this priest did, so the couple had found another priest delighted to wed them. And it was lovely, but there ARE still that sort of situations out there in rural Denmark. And that's not good enough. We shouldn't all have to move to Copenhagen to avoid discrimination. If we have a state church, then goddammit our priests need to toe the line! I mean, as state employees they get better pay and a FAR superior pension scheme, so if they want to they can just leave those benefits and start their own free churches with the right to discriminate. Good luck with that... /rant over

Not because I am a Christian or a homosexual, but I am of the personal belief that everyone, no matter the faith, attraction or political point of view, should have the right, as an individual, to say no (or yes). institutions, on the other hand, should not be able to deny you your right (or impose on you) to do what you now feel like, as long as it does not bring harm, or encourage harm / hatred towards others. if we as a country allow the state to make a law that deprives us of our right, we lose part of what gives us our freedom, the freedom to choose.

The neat thing about the Danish national church, is the diversity. You have some nearly Pentecostal churches (Karlslunde Strand Kirke), some very conservative churches and everything in between. The congregation is autonomous and chooses their pastor, and there are rules to secure a pastor chosen by a minority faction, if the church has more than one pastor. Religion is a matter of conscience, and some pastors do not feel that the Bible/Lutheran teachings gives them authority to wed same sex couples - and that's fine! Because they will refer you to a colleague who will be delighted to wed you - and in your church of preference. My pastor is one of those who weren't comfortable wedding same sex couples, so when we got a part time pastor, one of the factors we took into consideration was if they would wed same sex couples.

It's because most people simply are straight, that's just how it is. I think it's some kind of survival mechanic, like how in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared SPOILERS BELOW The average, then, becomes a sexual pedestalisation of females, a position of terrifying overpower, that the powerful have grown reliant on, and are notoriously reluctant to relinquish, as if something being utterly cruel and wrong was ever a reason, not to do it. This results in the average (peer pressure standard) sexual orientation of girls becomes anti-sexual (use it, or lose it) Once they have become anti-survivalist (at no threat to themselves), they feel manipulated and abused for sex by the non-pedestalised, who "don't deserve it", according to the standard. And now we have gender-based animosity, YAY!!!! That the men, too, of course, will respond to, because we are human beings, after all. Eye for an eye and a bit of the face (woopsie, that wasn't supposed to happen, sure glad it was them, not me), for another eye + a tooth, for an eye and a tooth and another chipped, and so on. Until we discover that THERE IS NO MORE EFFECTIVE WAY of motivating gender-based animosity and rape, than the suffering and animosity in itself. So now, we've got a bunch of people trying to crank that shit up to eleven. So far things are going great. So when the Bible Belt woman takes the stand at the legislative halls to just sob her little heart out, about how the "nasty satanic homos are corrupting the sanctity of HER holy marriage", she really means: "I've lost the lie, I've been using to pretend that getting rape was okay, all these years, and now, I look the fool for it!" - and it's counter-part, the justification for exploitation and sexual abuse and rape of the now anti-sexual females, who pressure each other into more and more anti-sexuality, to increase the felt impact of the offence and get more free money, as a replacement for the sexual happiness, they've always been taught/brainwashed into believing, was their entitlement, albeit, they can no longer receive it, due to their anti-sexuality. Is it really that difficult to comprehend, now that you think about it? WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING INFORMATION HAZARD READ ON ONLY AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION SPOILER FOR DON'T HUG ME I'M SCARED ------------------------------------------------------------------- ...the protagonists destroys the book of all the answers, because they have become aware, that their very existence as character in a show, is contingent, on there being a show for them to be in. Once the drama has been resolved and the show is therefore over, what then? They all die. That's right. The end is the end.

Pride is so much fun, I always try to attend it when it's in Copenhagen. It's seems to be more a celebration of life and happiness rather than sexual orientation (Although I know it's obviously that too), you tend to see a lot of people, especially young people, who aren't gay, who join in to support and celebrate with everyone. To me, that is arguably one of the my favourite things about our country. It's a true "love thy neighbour" mentality that most Danes grow up with.

That is the problem in my opinion, that pride is sometimes taken lightly, it is always very important with measure, it is very important, we must consider that others do not share the same way of thinking, therefore to improve the reputation of the movement, it should always be done with "measure", not mocking beliefs, nor mocking customs, is important that the movement is not a walking prostibulum, (it is one thing to feel pride and another thing to be a degenerate)

Sadly I think some of it is caused by religion. And I suppose that's one of the good things about Denmark being largely non-religious. Religion just isn't something you flaunt. You may have your beliefs (and many do), but they keep it private. And thus it would seem odd if you started a crusade here against gays and trans ect. But of course there is homophobia and hate crimes here. Nobody wants to acknowledge it though - partly, I think from disbelief. "This doesn't happen here" And while refusing to acknowledge reality is bad, it's also in a way good that the whole concept of hate crimes is so alien to MOST people.

@CarlAlex2

We probably never will - marriage is a privilege. As an example - if I wanted to give my brother all my money he would have to pay income tax on the amount (most of the money actually). I can marry a random guy from the street and give him all my money without paying any taxes. If I could marry my brother I could also give him all my money without paying any taxes, but I cannot marry my brother. I dont think you would find many who woul think siblings should be allowed to marry. There is nothing in the law any more about sex (you are not entitled to have sex with your spouse any more) and I dont think there ever was anything about love. Its all about legal obligations and rights like the right to transfer unlimited wealth without taxation. And for some reason it was only Folkekirken that was forced to perform same sex marriages - none of the other religious communities allowed to perfom legally binding marriages have to. Personally I think they should have let the members decide it (I think they would have done so - I would have voted yes) instead of some politicians virtue signalling.

And no they dont have to own everything in common. They can each have property the other cannot dispose of in any way. If this isnt a priviledge given that there are still restrictions on who can and cannot marry, I dont know what would be. I also note that the contributions to all other recognized religious communities than the Peoples Churh are tax deductible and that the tax value of the church tax its members pay are A LOT larger than the governments expenditures on the church, so while the constiturion states that the state must support the peoples church its in reality more the other way around. It was also intended since 1849 that the church should be regulated by a sepparate constitution (written in the constitutions § 66) that the politicians for some odd reason still havent been able to come up with. Note that the chuch ceased to be a national chuch with the constitution in 1849 and became the chuch of the Danish people - should the church cease to be the peoples church (less than 50% membership) the states obligation to support it will cease (though I serioulsly doubt the state would accept the huge loss of tax income this would imply if they chose to - snd we havent even touched the issue of the church properties taken by the state that would then aslo have to come up). And it cannot preach whatever it wants - it has to align with the Augsburg Confession. The members can off course believe what they want, but I fail to see why anyone whose beliefs differ would pay the taxes to be a member.

This is very enlightening, As I am Danish living in the UK. I have to agree, with lots of the comments, that religion has a big part in the US, as In the UK as well. And sadly people getting called names and bullied in Denmark too. Overall I hope and believe that the majority, do not care if you have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, you fell in love with a human, not what gender they are.

Also I have experienced a bit of hate because I'm non-binary and the do not understand it. I would say that it is more acceptable to be gay than trans in Denmark because trans is a bit new to Danes.

Thank you so much for sharing a bit about your experiences. From people we know, it seems like you’re right about gender identity being less understood in Denmark and non-binary people facing more challenges and bigotry because of that. If history is the guide, things will hopefully change soon and brave people like you living their true and authentic self helps with that advancement. Thank you so much once again for adding to this important conversation because we are not able to properly speak about experiences around gender identity, but your comments will help others gain understanding 😊

Dear Storm, Cool name btw! My oldest child is non binary and bisexual, they are 17 and goes to gymnasium. In their class there are several gay / bi/ pan sexuals and another non binary person. Just hang in there sweetie, it will get better as your classmates get older and more mature. You are valid! And you probably not the only LGBTQ in your class. Some people just take longer to figure out what they are. My youngest is 9 and a lesbian. She gives zero fucks about people’s opinions. Kids and teens can be cruel, most of them will grow out of it. I'm non binary too and I've never come out because of the lack of understanding for trans/non binary people here, I live on Falster and I will say in the more rural parts like here, homophobia and trans/enby phobia is still a very big problem, the amount of insane and hateful views i've encountered from people confiding in me because they though I was cis-het is staggering, this has just led me to be really, really nervous to be myself in the area where I live, because I really don't want to be harassed or assaulted in public, so I agree that Copenhagen is a better place where you can be different without facing too much overt hate and discrimination but the rural parts of the country like Falster where I live definitely has a much longer way to go before we're there and people don't have to live in fear and/or flee to the bigger cities to be themselves without fear.

How time flies - we have come a long way since we published the Danish edition of "the frontrunner" by Patricia Nell Warren back in 1977! - but there is still some way to go - and some of the transexual/gender-related rights are far more complicated to legislate about as it overlaps or even clashes with other legislation on completely different areas. I'm hopeful that we eventually will get there too. You make great videos and it is cool to hear your take on Denmark - hope your employment will allow you to stay and enjoy Denmark for as long as wish.

@@marycanary86 Indeed. We're human, that's how our brains work. In fact, that is pretty much the exact function our large brains evolved to perform: to remember past experiences and use those experiences to make assumptions about new events. Sometimes those assumptions are wrong because life is a complicated and diverse phenomenon, but that doesn't mean that we can just stop making assumptions altogether. It also doesn't mean that assumptions are inherently "bad" in any way, as long as people are willing to adjust when an assumption turns out to be incorrect.

I dont really agree about that. I strongly believe in god and his love for ALL of us no matter our sexuallity. Religion teaches us to be kind to one another and yes I do know that there are passages that contradict that. But every religious book is written by HUMANS from centruies ago and it is human nature to fear what we dont understand. I personally dont need to live my life by the letter of the bible because I believe that god is around us and we only need to look inside ourselfs to know how he/she want us to treat others. @@Rasendebolge I said that religion is the root of all evil, not that faith is. Having faith in something greater is perfectly fine, but following religious scriptures fanatically is not a good thing. Religion is created to control the massed and is not open for interpretation. Everyone should form their own opinion on how they want to believe in god, and not base it on what some crazy person wrote a thousand years ago. What you say is very nice, but you're definitely in the minority. If more people shared your mindset, the planet would be a much better place.
