I'm 45 years old, born and raised in Maryland and I've been a AFL fan for almost 40 years. I thank early years ESPN for that. My childhood dream was to play for Adelaide. When I was in college AFL was in its initial years of being played in the States. I saw a team had started nearby, so I showed up one day and they embraced me. Not quite my childhood dream; but I got to play a couple of years. AFL is my favorite sport to watch, with Rugby League being a close second

I think you're getting confused about the aboriginal representation. There is a team called the "Indigenous All-Stars" comprised of all aboriginal/indigenous players. They're not a regular team in the AFL competition, but more an exhibition team. About 1 in 10 AFL players is of aboriginal heritage, which is quite a bit higher than their representation in the general population. The Indigenous All-Stars play a regular pre-season match against one of the established AFL teams. "Geelong" when said with an aussie accent comes out a bit like "Ja-long" or "Je-long". There is a much better "What is AFL?" video on the official AFL KZbin channel with an American VoiceOver.

That No5 player wasn't getting kicked in the head by accident, he threw himself in front of the legs to stop the kick. It's called a smother when you stop the ball that way. Also the guys in high visibility yellow are the referees.

Funny how they couldn't see the many referees of the field the whole video who were wearing bright fluorescent clothes XD Could just be because they didn't know what they looked like and the camera never focused on them and they probably weren't looking that hard for them

Don't worry about how the Finals system works. It's confusing. In any case, the two deserving teams play off in the Grand Final and the winner gets the cup. Key skills on such a big field of play are stamina and peripheral vision. It seems like a hybrid sport - a cross between basketball, rugby and American football? - but it's actually older than them all.

Someone mentioned in the comments below American Mason Cox who plays for Collingwood. A 6’10” former Texan basketball player, up until a few years ago had never even heard of AFL, let alone played it! He has caught on to the game so well, he was named man of the match by the channel 7 commentary team at the recent Queen’s Birthday match between Collingwood and Melbourne. Another player actually won the title, but it does emphasise how far he has come in such a short period of time.

One of the unique things about AFL is that we try and attack to our own goal, in every other code u r trying to defend your own territory or goal. This signified by “own goal” as being scoring for your opponent.

In the Finals (the playoffs), the top 4 teams (after the regular season) play each other in the Qualifying Finals and have two chances to advance. The winners get to rest the following round and go directly to the 3rd round (Preliminary Finals). The losers of the Qualifying Finals have to play in the second round against the winners of the 5th to 8th team games. I like this because teams are rewarded for finishing in the top 4. It makes the regular season games have more importance.

Also, there is no offside rule at all in AFL. You can move around anywhere you want, and you can kick and handball the ball any direction on the field. Players are allowed to be at all locations on the field. One other thing, the field or pitch where we play AFL is called an OVAL or we just call it a "GROUND".

G'long, Bris-bin, Mel-bin is how we say these places... And the black and white striped team is Collingwood. They arent all Aboriginal, in fact they just were called out for being a rather racist culture. There are a fair few Aboriginal players in the game and they have a spark and magic with their abilities. It is also rumoured that the game originated from a traditional Aboriginal game "Marn grook" There are 18 players from each team on the field at a time, and the field varies in size but is usually around the 170-180m (195yds) and although its an oval it would probably be 150yds wide. Some midfield players run around the 15kms per game (9.3Miles) There are field umpires and boundary umpires and you see them quite regularly, though they try and stay out of the main line of play. Also a lot of players can kick the ball 70m and a 50m kick is nearly a standard. Ive been to a game where there were 87500 spectators and the atmosphere was like nothing Ive experienced elsewhere. Finals are weird to look at how theyre played.. but basically the higher you finish the more chances you get to progress. You should watch a whole game or at least an entire 1/4 to get a feel for how the game plays. Keep looking into AFL though guys.. love the content. Oh and the season is on currently.. actually watching a game now. Also there is 1 American that plays in the AFL.. His name is Mason Cox and theres a video on him you should react to.. You can get the AFL pass and watch games on your computer too... a few reactors watch and do live streams with us Aussies. 💜🇦🇺

We love our game, and we love it when people from around the world fall in love with it. Wouldn't think of talking people down for learning something they aren't familiar with, who haven't grown up with it. We also have a lot of Irish players in the league, and I think we will have a more two-dimensional exchange with the US rather than Australians going over there to kick in the NFL. Look up Mason Cox, he's from Texas, and is now a duel citizen and premiership player for the Collingwood Football Club (A club we all love to hate). Really hope you enjoy our great game. 💛💙

Nice reaction again fellas. This guy is clearly English but describes the game pretty well. Aussie rules is also old; the first game was in 1858 and the laws of the game were established in 1859, making it one of the oldest football codes in the world. Melbourne is pronounced "Melbn" with the emphasis on the first syllable and Geelong is pronounced "J'long" with the emphasis on the second syllable. No AFL club has only Aborginal players, but Aborigines are overrepresented in the league; Aborigines make up 3% of the general population but 11% of AFL players. Yes, we also call "football" soccer. No - 18 players per team on the ground. Yes, the ground is big - usually around 180 m long and 150 m wide (a cricket ground - on most grounds, cricket is played in sumer and footy in winter). Ha, ha, when you were counting players in the picture, you include the umpires (= referees, wearing fluoro green in this case). In terms of out of bounds, if you kick it out of bounds on the full (without it bouncing), the opposition gets a free kick. Occasionally players do kick or handball the ball into an opposition player's leg to force it out of bounds and get a free kick, but this is rare and it is probably better just to retain possession and pass it to a team mate. The finals set up is a bit confusing, but it is designed to reward teams that have played well throughout the season. If you finish in the top 4, you get a "double chance"; that is, if you you lose the first game, you are not knocked out, unlike teams in the bottom half off the top 8 who are eliminated from the finals if they lose in the first week. The winners of the top 4 in the first week proceed directly to the preliminary final and get a week off. The season is March to September (Autumn/fall, winter and early spring Downunder). The games are on right now. I am now watching Melbourne vs Greater Western Sydney. You are right about the range of players' sizes; they range from 5'6" to 6'11". Here is another AFL video to react to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHWUd6ydpp6Cmbc/. It features Cyril Rioli, who was a superb player and a good example of the style of play by indigenous players.

My nanna was in a pub not long after she arrived in Australia, and was asked what team she supported. Not knowing anything about the ins and outs, she picked the local one to where she was living. My uncles ended up picking the one that was the same animal mascot as thier High school team. I picked mine the same as my uncles as I would watch games with them. My little brother picked the team who visited his primary school for an 'auskick' skills day (check out that program), and they play against his dads team on Anzac day, so they both watch and give each other shitdepended who lost. . My boss's kid is named the same as a crows player and has got signed merch and a baby jumper, so may end up a crows fan while his dad is not. Some families raise the next gen as fans for the same team. Some people pick the team their best friend supports (mick molloy) and spend their lives sharing going to games together. Some people will have a second team they support in the right conditions, like if the second team is in the finals while the first team is not, or support a different team for the AFL-W. Essentially, there are many reasons someone picks a team, but as long as you stick with them through wins n losses, its all good 😎

At any one time, there is 36 players on the field. The guys in the yellow shirts are the umpires (referees) and there are three of them. There are also boundary umpires who throw it back in when it goes out of bounds. There are 4 of them. It's a great game, there is so much action!

Aussie rules players make great kickers because everyone on the team needs to be able to kick the ball , and we have been doing it since 5 or 6 yo . The drop punt , end over end kick comes from AFL. it doesn't go as far but is a lot more accurate than the spiral punt . We also can kick so the ball curves in the air like a curve ball and this is proving useful in the NFL to as its hard to catch .

Welcome to our great game guys. We cant believe its not more loved around the world. Really think the youtubers are starting to catch on. If you got any questions hit me up. Theres definitely 18 per team on the field. They often squeeze up one end of the ground where the ball is though so its still congested. We play this game from as old as we can walk and the rules are modified for little kids. In the last few years a womens professional league has taken off and female participation has gone through the roof. They go just as hard as the dudes (even if their bodies arent the same size). This is a game for all shapes and sizes. As you were watching the bulldogs sing their song there was Caleb Daniel who is around 5 foot 7 and Marcus Bontempelli who is about 6 foot 4 and they can play the same position (play it differently).

If you kick the ball out on the full its a free kick to the other team, if it bounces out its a throw in. However if you intentionally knock the ball out of bounds, that is also a free kick to the other team. You can run outside the boundary holding the ball inside the line though.

It took me a year of watching before my team, the Western Bulldogs, kinda revealed themselves to me and I am now a lifelong member of the club. So don’t rush it, see what mascot, colors, team song, and uniforms you like, then learn a bit about the club’s history and culture, and then you will know what club is your fit.

Just for your information, when the sideline referees throw the ball into play, they must turn their backs to the players so they don't see where the ball is going. This allows for a fair ball entry and any player can intercept the ball. In other words, the refs don't favour any side as they can't physically see the players or the field.

Yes we call Soccer , Soccer . An Aussie Rules side consists of 22 players , 18 on the field and 4 on the bench . This year there has also been added a 5th player on the bench as a " Medical Sub" who will only be played in the case of incapacitating injury . You were reading that map about the Finals perfectly , it can be confusing but you get the gist eventually. basically the top four get a second chance if they lose while the bottom four are eliminated .

I did get a chuckle out of talking about updated graphics for the twms and then pointed to the oldest one lol Also, don't worry about picking the best team. The way the team draft works every year gives the best picks to the bottom teams. theres a natural lifespan to most teams success, the game evolves nicely like that year to year.

If you wanna pick a team there are two that are significant in terms of special games like ANZAC match which is collingwood or essendon but honestly just find your preffered team song if you don't want to go via players and don't feel vloser to any one state or place in Australia lol I myself am a Saints supporter ^_^

"Soccer" for "Association football" is like "rugger" for rugby. Both are upper-class slang from boys boarding schools. I understand why people dislike it. On the other hand, I use it myself. I live in Ireland, where Gaelic football is played. I'm quite strongly of the opinion that there is no sport called football: football is not the name of a sport; it's the name of a family of sports.

Agreed, US football, AFL, Soccer, Rugby League & Union, Gaelic are all different codes of football.

I totally agree with you. Football really refers to the most popular football code in a city or country. In Melbourne, football refers to AFL. In Sydney, football refers to NRL. Terminology is now confusing here in Australia because the administrators who run soccer here hate the word soccer to be used as a name for their sport. They announced about 6 years ago that from now on soccer will be called football. Now when someone in Australia says football, we have no idea what code they're talking about. Can you imagine what would happen in USA if the US Soccer administrators tried doing that. We used to have the National Soccer league. Now it's called the A League and its run by Football Australia. For me, living in Melbourne, football will always be AFL and Soccer will always be Soccer.

Soccer in Australia is played by kicking the ball only; hands touching the ball during play on the field is a foul. That's about it for my knowledge of soccer.

EVERY player is trying to score, but the forward line (full forward and 2 center pockets) are key positions for scoring. The Half forwards are high scorers also, that generally do a lot of setup and speed entry work to the forward scoring zone, fed by the midfielders.. There is no limit on who can score for your team, and in fact, the opposition can aslo score for you, but no matter what the opposition does, it can only score 1 behind, never a goal. you will see them deliberately take the ball over the score line to prevent losing possesion and potentially giving up a goal.

Competition starts in March - grand final always last Saturday in September ( some yrs creeps into first Saturday in October - the best is to aim at position 1 or 2 as they get home finals - so with preseason training etc players only get 10 weeks off - AFL is a religion

There are four posts on each end of the ground, the two tallest posts in the middle are the goal posts and the two shorter posts on either side are the points posts. The objective is to kick the ball in between the two taller goal posts to score a goal, which is worth six points. If the ball hits the post, is touched by someone's Hand before it goes in, then it only scores a point. It's also only a point if the ball goes in between one of the tall posts and one of the shorter posts.

The guys in yellow are the umpires, they can get confusing because these days the umpires change their uniforms more often than the players do and each team, now has about 4 different uniforms as opposed to the old one. Umpires used to just wear white, it was determined they were too hard to see, so they got yellow, and then for tv now half the time they are in pink or orange or what have you.

~ 5.25 Gee-long (that one's pretty easy, you had the correct pronunciation the first attempt). Mel-burn (because of our lazy pronunciation. I understand that there's a place in the US where the way you pronounced it would be correct, our way is different).

So the finals seems a bit confusing but I can simplify it: Instead of a round robin bracket like in the NFL, the AFL rewards the top four teams effectively with double elimination. 5-8 don’t get that advantage. If you’re a top four team and you win in the first round, you don’t have to play in the second round and you advance automatically to the third round, one step before the grand final. If you’re a top four team and you lose in the first round, you can still come back the next week and win to stay in. 5-8 don’t get that advantage. They must win every one of their games to win the championship, or as we call it, the premiership. Fun fact: a lot of Aussies call winning the premiership “winning the flag”, since it’s a long-standing tradition that one of the rewards along with the cup, is a pennant, our premiership flag. Go Saints!

The finals is confusing but basically if you finish in the top 4 you get a second chance. The top 4 qualifying final winners go straight to the preliminary final but the losers get another chance against the winners of the elimination finals between the 5th-8th teams.

I think it would have been a lot better to watch the older official AFL version. Its still mostly applicable. This video went into too much detail for a brand new watcher and its overwhelming. The "What is AFL?" Video from the AFL channel is a lot more simplistic and made to show to someone that has no idea.
