Jonah and the islander boys are all Polynesian. Think Taika Waititi, Maui or The Rock. The accent isn't Australian but islander. The dynamic here in Australia is usually fun loving banter between the nationalities. Just don't cross an islander 😂

Lol, must be a trip for Americans watching Chris Lilly. His satire is very clever though. If you're Australian you will know just how hilariously (if not disturbingly) recognizable his character are. And if you're a teacher like me, you will have had a Jonah in your class at some point. The Jaime King - private school girl - is even more scary. In fact that character is meant to have South African background/parents, funny you should mention. The Jonah character is Tongan/Pacific Islander-Australian, so I get why he (and his friends) may sound a little like South African to a foreigner. Most of the others in the show sound quite typically Aussie though!

In Australia we have migrants and their Australian-born offspring from the South Pacific Islands. The main islands they are from are Tonga and Samoa. The boys in this video are from that ethnicity except for the main actor, and I believe, writer, Chris Lilley. Many of these families are good Christians . Some are "feral "or do fall foul of the law, as with any community. I have experienced this naughtiness of these boys like Jonah/Chris Lilley. He did get some flack for his "black-face" character. Lilley also does a schoolgirl named Jamie, too.

Every Western Sydney highschool has a "Jonah from Tonga." He is equally the class clown and the school bully. It's such a scary accurate depiction of Western Sydney schools that this show gives me actual nostalgia for highschool. It is a melting pot but we have a large Polynesian community in the Western Suburbs that you have these demographics of students throughout the region. I came from Mount Druitt, the Mecca for Polynesians in Australia so I tell you what, this show nails it even if it's trying to be satirical.
