So the backstory behind Hawthorn (gold with vertical brown stripes) vs Essendon (black with red sash) is that they were at each other’s throats in particularly the 80s I believe but in the years leading up to this game Essendon had been physically bullying them and at half time of this game the coach gave them a real razzing and they just had enough and came out with a “we’re not gonna take it anymore” fire in their belly. So she went nuclear.

Hawthorn and Essendon have had some kind of heated rivalry since the 1980s. Hawthorn won the 1983 Grand Final over Essendon, and then Essendon returned the favour, winning the Grand Final over Hawthorn in 1984 and 1985. There is definitely some hatred between the two sides. I'm an Essendon supporter (hence my user name), although I don't personally hate Hawthorn (probably because I didn't start watching AFL until 1993, so I missed the rivalry in the 1980s), I can definitely see that there has been some intensity in those games. Less so in recent years, partly because the AFL have been clamping down, but I'd say also partly because neither side are going very well at the moment. Back in the 1980s, they were powerhouse teams.

One of the fun things about AFL is the fighting. Those guys take their game seriously. I love it when they jump up to catch the ball and climb up the other guy's back with their spiky shoes to get the ball before anyone else. After the games when everyone has cooled down, the players will more than like go for beers at the pub with each other, the fights completely forgotten.

NRL is huge here too, in NSW and QLD its bigger than the AFL, but on a country level as a whole and especially VIC, the AFL is obviously bigger. But some of the NRL stuff is BRUTAL Even looking into state of origin which is 3 games to take the title each year between NSW and QLD, "state vs state, mate vs mate" and the history with that and the huge rivalry and deal it is, even people that dont watch the NRL tune in for that every year, I think you guys would love it

A piece of media, you probably can't react too, but might still find interesting, is the movie "Green Street Hooligans". It's about the hooligan culture in the UK. Elijah Wood plays an American, who goes to his sister in London and gets involved in a "firm". Hooligan culture unfortunately is also a thing in all of Europe. In some countries more in others less, but you'll have Hooligans in every country. As I heard, this isn't really a big thing in the US, so it might be interesting to see this type of "fan culture".

Nice call at around 11 minutes. The guy who says "is this a rivalry?" Is spot on. The two teams that played that game faced off in four Grand finals (our version of the Super bowl) in a row back in the 1980s. The games were even more brutal back then. But one of the most brutal players from that era for Hawthorn, Dermott Brereton, a tough Irish guy got into the rooms at the half time interval and told the players that he was sick of Essendon beating them physically, which they had for the previous few years. He fired them up and told them to "draw a line in the sand" That game became known by that phrase, the line in the sand game. The rivalry runs deep, this is one of many nasty events in Hawthorn Vs Essendon games. I was at that game, the fights in the crowd were worse than those on the field. Good times.

They don’t “let it slide” with the fighting etc - they have a tribunal where they get “punished” etc a few days later, which we hear about on the news. Unlike other football games where they can get red, yellow cards etc and players get sent off by the referee, the game carries on. Back a couple of decades ago it was “on for all” then the blood rule was bought in too, so off the pitch if you were bleeding.

Fun Footy Facts: Aussie Footy, was formally created in 1858 based off observations of the Aboriginal people playing a kind of keepings off with an inflated animal stomach as a ball. AFL players can often run an average of up to 12-14kms (8.7mile) per game. Running at approximately 36kmph (22mph) toward each other whilst in a tackle. So they impact with each other at about a bone breaking 40+mph.

Footy before cameras were everywhere was way different from what it is now. Part of the game was antagonizing your opponent until someone eventually snapped, wet willies, pinching his lat, twisting an arm, stepping on his foot with your studed boot, and tripping him as he ran. It was as much about pissing off your opponent as it was about playing good footy. Local footy was the most brutal display as family members would often storm the field to join in on the punch on. Sometimes there would be 100+ people storming the field throwing haymakers at everyone. AFL is tame compared to what used to happen at local footy clubs.

Yeah, if you think this is rough check out AFL from the 60, 70, and 80s. The sport today seems more like a sport, there isn’t a ton a fighting. But pull the older stuff up and just like American football, there really was no rules about “accidentally” punching someone in the face. In fact I believe in some of the older games result didn’t matter as much as inflicting pain on the other team. It was really a sport for men one step away from being a convict.

in AFL & VFL both have Tribunal which is. a Tribunal is the disciplinary tribunal of the Australian Football League, an Australian rules football competition. The Tribunal regulates the conduct of players, umpires, and other officials associated with the AFL & VFL and its clubs.

If the ball gets kicked through the middle 2 stick/goal post, you score 6 points, if it goes through the 2 outside post it 1 point. Though this was a pretty rough game, it's nothing compared to the violence of the 70's & 80's. On an average game the crowd is probable close to 40,000 to 50,000 people. The grand final at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is about 100,00 people.

G'day gentlemen. Nice reaction. Yes, there was a rivalry between these teams for a while. I agree that you need to watch a game or as the previous comment maker said, the 1989 (or 1990) Grand Final. Keep up the good work, mates.

Lastly yes they are huge rivals, Google a map of the teams and you’ll see that many play at the MCG and many are located SE Australia, within driving distance. Also lists of the clubs have been around since the 1850s.

Glad yall like our sports! Ballantyne was involved in a lot of blues. These days much less fights cause you get suspended and a lot of these guys on match payments. If you punch someone you fuck your money up where as back in the day youd be a hero

Love seeing you guys in America get into our national game. I'm biased of course as I am a Port Adelaide Supporter but the 2004 Grand final Port Adelaide vs Brisbane (equivalent of your Super Bowl) is probs one of the last Grand finals with multiple punches thrown.lol.

There's the 'shirt punch' where you grab their shirt, pull them in and then push hard - so you can kind of get away with it. I'm sure the refs let some of the fights go for a while because it's a bit of a crowd pleaser.

We call the Petty stuff "Stirring Sh1t", lol. It works great to get under the other team's skin causing them to give away a penalty.
