The difference between the keeper up close is for spinners(slow ballers who bowl at around 80 kmph) and when hes way back its the fast bowler coming in hot at the wicket (fast bowler at around 140 kmph). Fast bowlers bowl around an average speed of 120kmph, the slower ones can go for 100-110 kmph and the faster ones go around 145-154 kmph. The wicketkeeper for fast bowlers stands about 10-15 yards behind the stumps. The spinners bowl in a range of 70-100kmph speed, that slower pace allows the wicketkeeper to stand closer to the stumps. The shorter distance allows the keeper to receive the ball quicker but also demands for quicker reflexes and increases the chance to miss the ball if it has deflection from the bat.

NB: There are occasions in which they will come up close to the stumps even while keeping to a medium fast baller ( who bowls in the mid 130 kph range ) probably as a part of tactics , just to make sure that the batters don't leave the crease and attack... It restricts the shot making of batters and also at times puts pressure on them just by thinking the fact that the wicket keeper is up to the stumps and that he should be really careful not to fall over and lose balance while playing his shot... Because wicket keepers like ms doesn't need more than a fraction of a second to send the batsman back to the pavillion

Oh nah bro, his batting only weakened in 2016 and he volunteerily gave up captaincy right after regaining form. So people might say he kept his place in the team cuz of captaincy but that isn't true. He carried that team with Virat from 2011-2014, after which Rohit, Shikhar got super consistent. He had an average of 50 in 2017. Form dipped again in 2018 but he averaged 50+ again in 2019. If anything his batting was overpowered by his other skills.

@@pawangupta7613 Funny theory but untrue. His averages from numbers 3-7 are always in the top 3 averages of all times. His strike rate was low because of the number of times he had to save the team from a batting collapse in between 2011-14. He has 10k ODI runs and the third highest number of fities in the world. The whole "not outs help average theory" is farce, because out of the 84 times he remained not out, 50 came in chasing and we won 48 of those games. If anything, his number of runs suffered because he had to play in the middle or lower order and yet he was in ICC top 10 from 2006-2016. Just so you know those rankings are not measured by averages but number of runs scored.

Few pointers: - The bat is an extension of the batter and can be used to cross the popping crease. - The stumping (whipping off the bails) by the wicketkeeper deems a batter out, if the batter is not "behind" the popping crease (line) when the ball is in play. - Reasons for standing up close to the wickets is if the bowler is a spinner and when the bowler is a fast bowler, the keeper most often stand back to collect the ball, that most often is travelling at speeds between 135 kmph - 155 kmph - The ball needs to be in players hand(s) that is coming in contact with the wickets to claim a runout/stumping - The reason MSD was calm is because, he played the batter. The batter running towards his side of the pitch, saw MSD being calm and assumed that the ball was going to the other end or that the ball was still not near the keeper and did not attempt hard enough to cross the line on time. -The game where MSD ran the player out, was against South Africa and the last game of a series which was until then was a tie. This game was the decider and the winner of the game would be declared with winner of the series. I assume that it was a very close match with the opposition needed two runs to win and India needed a single wicket to win and jubilation was due to the game being so close. - Skipper in Cricket means the Captain

But what separates him from others by miles is his reading of situation, the batter and his proclivities, his field placements and instructions to the bowler. Over and above that his batting and Captaincy prowress. To win games from the jaws of defeat is his speciality. It was a pleasure of my life to watch him and his boys play fearless cricket. I say this after watching and following the game for 35 - 36 years and I have played competitive cricket for about 7 years in Mumbai.

The position of a wicket keeper is his own choice, he can stand by near or far. As far as the safety concerns spinning ball have low phase and fast ball have around 135 to 150 km/h so normally they prefer to stand little far behind the wickets.. And also to catching the ball also is a consideration, if it is a spin bowler it is good to stand near to take the catch and if it is a fast bowler there is more chance the ball will travel more far from the batsman… and obviously we love you “MSD” ❤❤

A humble correction: He is not asking or telling see ya or waving, he is "appealing" to the umpire(referee) saying/asking it's "out". Umpire then gives the verdict. Any player of the team can claim the wicket. Need not be actively involved in that ball. Also, as someone else mentioned, the wicket keeper will stand up close to the stump if the bowler is spin bowling (ball travels at 40-65 mph and has around 5k revolutions per minute) and at a distance when the bowler sprints and then delivers the ball at a pace, hence fast bowling (travels at 75-100 mph). Our goat, msd, sometimes will stand up close for even fast bowlers 🔥🐐

Just FYI, the dismissal at 8:10 is just another example of how smart this dude is. The reason he acted all calm is because the batsman running towards his end is watching the keeper to see if the ball is actually coming to this end. He acted non chalant because he wanted the batsman to believe that the ball wasn't coming to that end, and the minute the ball reached him, my man switched up. (The reason the batsman looks at the wicketkeeper is because he can't turn around to look at the ball while he's running) As usual, MS Dhoni playing chess while the others play checkers
