I love when Americans say " You couldn't get away with saying that now!" You couldn't really get away with saying it back then, but as we all know Nan is offensive, we rolled with it. It's just the difference in our sense of humour. 😊

Exactly. The whole point is that Gran doesn't fit the stereotype cuddly, nice granny, but actually exhibits the prejudices of some in those older generations.
@jamesmason33483 жыл бұрын
It's very much the difference between laughing at and laughing with. Here, we laugh at Nan, due to her outdated views. There's no expectation that, as a viewer, you will be on board with her world view, it's the cringey, "you can't say that" which makes it funny.

Here in the UK we have programmes, normally comedies, that go close to the edge. The majority enjoy laughing at racist characters. There are also sitcoms made by West Indians, South Asians, Africans, etc. mocking their own stereotypes in true UK fashion. That said, I have seen (and been part of) a mass walk out when a comedian told a gag that was little more than racist hate speak, so we definitely have limits.

You need to watch "Love Thy Neighbour" and "Mind Your Language". A great way to teach the recognition of intolerance or racism is to show it without hitting people over the head with it, and let them see, determine and come to their own conclusions about it. Humour is a brilliant way of doing that.

I walked through my local park en route to the shops a few weeks ago. A man and his dog were walking in front of me. His dog stopped and did a doggy poop, the man carried on walking. I feebly said nothing! A true Nan original was walking towards us, and she shouted "Oi, mate, pick-up your dog s**t". I heard him say, 'I don't know where it is, and I don't have any bags' She said, I saw exactly where it is, and I carry spare bags. In future, keep an eye on your dog and pick-up it's f**k*n s**t.
