Spain named the archipelago as "Las Islas Filipinas" (The Islands of King Philip II of Spain). The local languages didn't often use the letter F and replaced it with the P. So Filipinas became Pilipinas. The Americans had renamed Las Islas Filipinas as "The Philippine Islands" or "P.I." during the American Commonwealth period.

While Kai Sotto had a several D1 NCAA colleges wanting him to play, he eventually went the pro route. Last year he joined the GLeague ignite team together with the other NBA prospects like Jalen Green (half Filipino btw) Jonathan Kuminga and more. As you may know 2 mentioned are both in the NBA. While Kai was not yet elligible for this years draft has currently signed to the Adelaide 36ers and try his luck there. The same pathway to the NBA done by Lamelo Ball. FYI. Kai recently played his debut games for Gilas Pilipinas just this year for the Asian Games Qualifiers and Olympic Qualifiers and had his first NBA level competition against Serbia

Filipinos are challenged when playing basketball and volleyball unless international rules will allow a height cap or limit to allow short players to have a fighting chance against teams that have players taller than 6'3". This would be similar to having weight categories in boxing, wrestling, and weightlifting but do you think the tall countries will ever allow it to happen?

By the way, as for Kai. He went to GA, in hoops program called TSF for a year and then to the first ever Gleague "developmental program" called Ignite with Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga. I don't think he was even eligible for NCAA. He now got an offer in Australia and currently (possibly) started training with his new team. He's now taking the Lamelo Ball route. He's not yet playing but the Australian pro league and his team's socmed followers exceedingly blew up when this was announced, and his jersey is now the best-selling jersey.
