My wife is from Peterborough,and used to live over in Westwood,unfortunately we are in South Cheshire now. I watch another American on YT and he is really into old buildings and old churches, they both have roots in england and ireland and plan to come over in the near future.

Just to update your wife Duncan. East of England Showground now a housing estate, Greyhounds and Speedway gone, no major shops in Queensgate (J.Lewis, M&S, Beales shut). The city is empty and soulless! You are fortunate to be in S. Cheshire.

I wish I had known, you could have called in for tea and biscuits. Yes it is a fine cathedral. My late wife and I loved the Christmas concerts there. Sadly, there is literally nothing else to see in Peterborough. x

After the Cathedral, you should have driven down the A1 for about 20 mins and visited our beautiful town of Stamford. We are a small market town, but have 5 medieval churches and a medieval hospital, as well as hundreds of listed buildings all in the town centre.

It never ceases to amaze me as to how they designed, carved, built these many structures. They range from Castles, Cathedrals and Churches to name just a few. Our country and Europe are covered in them. They really had skill, no computers just paper and pencil and muscle.

This is my home town and thats our big selling point. Imagine only a hundred years ago Peterborough was a tiny market town on the edge of the Fens! Which was basically a swamp and below sea level all the way east to the coast until it was drained and became prime farmland. Did you get to see flag fen the bronze age settlement on our eastern city limit?
@DaydreamersBarn3 ай бұрын
It is amazing what a hundred years can change. We did not get to see the bronze age settlement, maybe next time we are around that way. Cheers, Chris

The BBC did a very good adaptation of Anthony Trollope`s `Barchester Towers` books back in (probably) the 1970s, in which the filming for the fictional Barchester Cathedral was done here at this cathedral . Very beautiful . Maybe there will be something here on KZbin ,if I can find it .

Aaah the Jewel in Peterboroughs crown. btw.. It's pronounced Peader Burrah ! A long time ago our little video club (just 4 of us) made a (ghost) video and shot some of the scenes in the Cathedrals grounds. We made that "Berkeley Square" street sign and hoped it would stick to the wall whilst we filmed the scene !! Do you recognise the area ? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qomrpWqVms6ca68si=PcS3rHck5NeV1Y2d&t=528

Lovely video! It’s great to be a small part of your adventures in the U.K. 😊 You mentioned visiting The New Forest and Jurassic Coast at some point in a previous video - May I thoroughly recommend the following attraction in The New Forest for a floral fireworks display that will dazzle you… I cut and pasted this from Exbury Gardens’ website… “When is the best time to visit Exbury to see the rhododendrons and azaleas? Our collection of rhododendrons and azaleas is spectacular in late April and throughout May. Flowering does extend into June with late-flowering rhododendrons and deciduous azaleas taking the limelight during early summer.”

@@DaydreamersBarn You will LOVE Cambridge and it would probably be better to visit there in the summer months (late June/July/August/to mid September when most of the undergraduate students have gone home). A walk along The Backs from Silver Street takes you along the River (Cam) banks past Queens' College, St Catherine's, King's, Clare and on to Trinity Hall, Trinity, St John's and finally to Magdalen Colleges. In the summer you will find it easier to access the colleges, but if you went from Silver Street past the Anchor Pub and Queens', you could go straight on at the junction onto Sidgwick Road and on past Newnham College and the Sidgwick (Arts) Site, and Selwyn College is on your right hand side. If you go into the Sidgwick Site there is a gate that leads you into Selwyn College gardens and into the Old Court with its Chapel. Selwyn doesn't charge people to look around its courts and, if you are lucky, the canteen may be open in Hall. Cambridge is well worth a full day to visit. You don't HAVE to go only to the magazine-cover central colleges like King's with its Chapel, John's or Clare (which in any event often charge an entrance fee) because there are other places of beauty to see - Selwyn which I have already mentioned, the Round Church, the University Church (Great St Mary's) and Emmanuel College for example (John Harvard after whom Harvard University is named, he was an alumnus of Emmanuel). Many of the College Chapels are really beautiful. A punt along the Cam (do-it-yourself or hire a chauffeur/guide to do the punting) will show The Backs and many of the Colleges. If you DO go there, it is a small, walkable city and cars are not really welcome near the centre. It would pay to look it up on the web first. A few years ago, all the best three ranked universities in the world were all in Cambridge: Harvard and MIT and the "original" Cambridge. I am glad you are enjoying your time in the UK and I hope your family is feeling welcomed here.

JFI "The rood screen was a physical and symbolic barrier, separating the chancel, the domain of the clergy, from the nave where lay people gathered to worship. It was also a means of seeing; often it was solid only to waist height and richly decorated with pictures of saints and angels." Traditionally, the very rich (Lords & Ladies) or their ancestors had paid enough in the building of a church or cathedral to sit on the chancel side of the rood screen - with the saints and angels... I'm REALLY impressed with the internal roof structure and pulleys etc
