@DaydreamersBarn I'm glad you visited Northumberland before you return to the US next year but you missed so much, you never the inside of the 2 main castle's you saw , you really missed a treat, even if Bamburgh was busy, standing on the ramparts & looking out towards the Farne Islands, North towards another very famous castle, Lindisfarne or Holy Island, both in sight of each other or down to the southern end of the vast beach, Seahouses village (although you may have gone through there heading back to the A1.) Still, thank you for visiting my beautiful county, please, come for a few days, you'll see so much more and the local food is something that's a pity to miss (you missed the Lobster Pot in Bamburgh for a start) . Bring your son and daughter too, they'd enjoy the vibrant City of Newcastle & our coastal villages of Tynemouth and Cullercoats, the latter being famous for being the home of the famous, Amercan , artist, Winslow Homer , there are wonderful works of his showing Cullercoats and it's fishermen and fisher girls . His paintings are in the Smithsonian Museum and also the Metropolitan Museum of Art ❤

There's not enough time in one Human lifespan to see everything in the UK mate, I've spent 100,000s of miles driving around the mainland and occasional Scottish island and I've just been scratching the surface. We do live on astonishing island, the climate, the geography, the remarkable geology, and the Human story are truly wonderous. It's no wonder we get carried away with superiority complexes, for eons folk here must have felt blessed (when they weren't trying to kill each other that is).

I took my American Friends ( first ever trip to UK) to Holy Island and Bamburgh. Must have been the coldest Easter on record. Virginia to Bamburgh in 36 hours. I feel like I'm in a beautiful storybook living in England, traveling and exploring such magical gems that people live down from. We're so lucky to have this time to appreciate such historic places. Hiya Jess, Chris, Colette and Shane, it's so lovely when you can break up a long trip home by stopping at such beautiful locations and wow working your way down the East coast certainly provided plenty of opportunities to catch such stunning scenery. The UK has much to thank the Norman invasion for. Just for the record my friends I pronounced Alnwick the same way you did so I now know something new too. 😃 Thank you for another smile every mile vlog which myself and many others will love. Glad you enjoyed it though, I am working on it week after week when I can. We think we have the pronunciation correct, but yet again, not even close, lol. Thanks for the well wishes, it is a pretty stormy weekend. Cheers, Chris

its a LONG way to Edinburgh from where you live! Even for folk who measure distance in hours not miles. When I started watching the previous video, I assumed you must have got a train up from (probably) Peterborough. Although the prices are crazy...! Again, and as you say, its good to take the roads less travelled, and see so much more. There is so much to see in Northumberland, and if you ever get the chance again (I suspect unlikely now) it easily warrants several days. Great that you had some decent weather, and as always really enjoyed the ride and, as usual, seeing somewhere fascinating (Norham and its castle) that I never knew existed! I confess, the Scottish Borders and the Welsh Marches (Borders) are two of my favourite areas of the country for wonderful, pastoral scenery - with a real "borders" feel! Too many years since we made it up to the Borders - seeing this video made me determined we need to remedy that next year! Had you been a bit earlier in the season (I think it closes in the winter?), you could have gone inside Alnwick Castle. We went there a lot of years ago and it was amazing! Its the seat of the Percy family - the Dukes of Northumberland. And added in Dunstanburgh Castle, just south of Bamburgh - and the lovely coastal walk to it from Craster. Its another "epic" coastal castle, this time in ruins. Or Lindisfarne and Holy Island (if the tide was out...), or inland a bit to Cragside at Rothbury... (again, amazing!) just for starters! And the most scenic and iconic historical parts of Hadrian's Wall, and the National Park... We need to book a trip! And so few people! Well, maybe nearly everywhere except at Bamburgh, but that IS privately owned, and they have turned it into a major visitor attraction - no doubt much helped by Uhtred! Many thanks again!

and wic or wich indicate an Anglo Saxon settlement. There is also field, normaly prefixed by someones name/ its function or a compass direction (eg Waldringfield, Buttsfield, Northfield). Field actually means just an open space, presumably free of woods, the natural state before habitation and the Butts is where villagers practiced archery. There are some Hythes where I live, meaning river port and then theres Glebes indicating Church land. Names mean something over here, not obvious to Americans.

Hi, loved your video. I was born in Seahouses, which you didn't show but when I grow up I worked in Bamburgh for 4 years! Played football (soccer) on the field in front of the castle and now 50 years later I'm still taken by its beauty. Anick, or Aln wick is also a favorite of mine. Your drone footage showed all of the Dukes land, in fact the Duke of Northumberland owns most of the county which is run by tenant farmer as well as lands throughout England dating back to their time as medieval Earls. As a side note he and the Duchess went to a local restaurant for lunch and he said "who owns this" their answer was "you do, your grace. We rent the building and land from you." "Oh" he said, that was earlier this year! I now live in Lancashire but still visit my family in Seahouses, friends in Bamburgh and Beadnell and of course Alnwick and Berwick upon Tweed. I feel and know I'm a true Northumbrian and appreciate you love of our county and country.

It must have felt so good arriving back in civilisation ❤😁 Alnwick Castle was also backdrop of "Robin Hood Prince of thieves" with Kevin Costner, and the TV comedy "Blackadder" starring Rowen Atkinson, for the open titles where he rode a horse down the dry moat. As well as Harry Potter. What hit me about Alnwick when I first visited is the beautiful York stone in walls houses and castle its very impressive and of course has lasted for decades of years and "looks the part" as fits the location and eco friendly to the environment as its part of it!

If you ever go that way again be sure to take the time (no matter the weather) to walk along the beach toward the castle - one of the most imposing Norman castles ever built and home to the Percy family for centuries as the guardians of the Noth Eastern border with Scotland. What a family!!!

So pleased you are enjoying my home county of Northumberland, watching your video reminds me of how lucky I am to live here. There is so much more to see, Hadrians Wall and its Roman forts just one. Kielder forest, lovely towns like Hexham. The list goes on and on. Have a great time guys and if you need any pointers, ask away.

The White Swan Hotel in Alnwick contains a lot of the interior fittings, staircase etc. from the RMS Olympic. As the sister ship of the Titanic the film makers visited the hotel in order to copy those interior fittings for that movie.

I love it when tourists come away from London there is so much more to see. The people are friendlier. As this is my first time here I don't know how much you have travelled or where to but if you haven't you should come to Norfolk. It is stunning and has more historic stately homes than anywhere else. At 264, Norfolk is the 1 county in the UK for historic and country houses. It holds this title by some distance - the number two county, neighbouring Suffolk, has 78 fewer recognised historic properties. I live in the same area as Sandringham House. We have a lot of castles and ruins here also. I've been to America a few times. Not Florida but New England and I love Boston. I've been to Texas and Nashville and next Year I'm going to New York for a week getting excited about that one.

What a stunning video at Norham. Fantastic to see the castle. I have never heard of it I'm sorry to say. There are so many castles in the North east. There is a lovely song about Grace Darling by a band called 'The Strawbs'. Try to check it out.Thank you so much for a great road trip. Many happy memories of a holiday there with my late wife. Your drone footage really showed the castle's place in the landscape. Something closer up photos don't often do. I used to fish, never been to Alnwick though the name has been familiar to me since I was a teenager, Hardy's of Alnwick, manufacturers of top quality fishing tackle since 1872.

What a lovely video. After Norham, before you headed to Bamburgh, if you/d had time you would have enjoyed a quick look at my old home town of Berwick upon Tweed - with its unique Elizabethan (the 1st!) walls, bridges and many other sights and views to behold. And due to being at the border it's steeped in history even by British standards!!

"Annick". Once had a great holiday near Craster, stunk of kippers, and everyone (Northumberlanders, of course) spoke like this, 'Way 'igh! No ma''er! (matter). Hated the Scots. I knew Craster well. Hus family built Craster village harbour, distributes kippers all over England (in Scotland, they're called 'Smokies'). Craster was Grenadier Guards although he had initially been commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Used to live in Craster Towers. Of course.

Looks as if you're headed for Hadrian's Wall. We loved Northumbria, the countryside is lovely and the roads are almost empty, as you seem to have discovered for yourselves. This [art of the country seems to be largely ignored as a holiday destination, because there is so much to see and do, which is both a shame and a blessing at the same time. It's a shame because more people should experience this lovely part of Northern England, and a blessing because you can have ir all to yourself - well almost. My wife and I have spent so much time up there and, as keen walkers (hikers) appreciate the countryside more than most. I so nice that you are experiencing it too. Your video brings back fond memories of those happy times, as we have traversed all the roads you have featured today. I look forward to your next instalment.

It looked a lovely day when you crossed the Scottish border into Norham. The sky was beautiful. The drone footage was interesting as it showed the River adjacent to the Castle with a moat which was presumably filled by the River ? There must have been attacks on the Castle by the Scots. I googled it and it was built shortly after William the Conqueror invaded England around 1120. Great place to visit. I had never heard of it before and I live on Teesside which is not too far away. I might drive up there myself sometime. Thanks.

Well that's typical - I've just spent the season working at Haggerston Castle and would often be on the X15/X18 bus routes (family in Morpeth) going through the entire area you guys drove (in fact judging by your approach to Alnwick, you used the B6341 via the roundabout. I'm now briefly in Yorkshire, until work re-opens in the New Year.

@DaydreamersBarn He's just a single bloke. Was looking at renting a small house in the area, looking at regular houses and then the estate agent said, "Would you be interested in renting this one?" Would appear they aren't more expensive than other houses and many of the locals have lived in them as their first house.
@RonSeymour15 күн бұрын
Those views were amazing. I can understand why you got so excited Jess. I am afraid that we do rather take them for granted and, incredibly, such a small island has so many gems around every corner. English Heritage and other bodies generally ban drone flights on their land. Smaller places may not have a staff presence but be aware that they are fanatical in enforcing their polices. Having said that, provided that you are not in a CAA no-fly zone there is nothing that they can do about you taking off FROM PUBLIC LAND and flying OVER their land. Keep those drone shots coming.
@DaydreamersBarnКүн бұрын
We make sure to check on the no-fly app every time before take off. Also, we try to ask to make sure if we can. But yes, thank you for the information, we found out early the English Heritage and National Trusts do not allow flying. But if we are able, I will make sure we get what we can, weather permitting. Cheers, Chris

You missed out the best one of all - Lindisfarne Castle on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. More spectacular than Bamburgh, in my opinion though much smaller. a National Trust property so not open at this time of the year but well worth a visit when it is!! Be warned though - Holy Island can only be reached at low tide, across a causeway! Best to get overnight accommodation if you can, then sample sunset, the peace and quiet, the remoteness and the local cuisine. I can recommend the Crown and Anchor pub.

It was good to see dozens of mole hills on your walk to the castle. The soil is so fine after they've done with it. According to written accounts, the battles that took place in and around that area were absolutely brutal - you should reference some of them - it would add a touch of drama to your visits. The music is so well chosen - atmospheric. Bamburgh castle is central to a series of books - The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell - which I mentioned to you. A cracking read, a story about the formation of the country - England. Another terrific video. Cheers ! Sheffield South Yorkshire.
