Boodle fight is a military tradition in the philippines where soldiers would eat their meals standing or sitting with one hand behind their backs and using the other to eat the meal as fast as possible, every man for himself. Originally this was practiced so soldiers can eat fast and be on the go in times of hightened alerts.

This is one of the few types of communal eating activities in the world that makes you think twice about reaching for your smartphone. That's actually a good thing! This means that since your fingers are covered in sauce, you dare not put that all over your smartphone's screen, right? But more importantly, this enables everyone at the table to actually spend more time bonding together and truly enjoying the food with no aftertaste of metal cutlery or splinters from wooden chopsticks (or the awkwardness for those not used holding a pair of chopsticks!) instead of looking at their smartphones (as you would normally see in other restaurants). Feeling the different textures and smelling the food gives one a truly 3D gastronomical experience. Well done, Ella! More power to your team and thanks to the Tita and her cooking staff for a wonderful meal!!!

Also worth mentioning this isn't a regular thing for Filipinos. We only get to try this at fiestas or in the province. It's romanticized a lot abroad. For regular get togethers, family-style on platters and individual plates is it.

Kamayan style dining is also known as a "Boodle Fight", named after the Filipino"army style" of eating. After a long day of marching, soldiers would eat off of banana leaves in the native tradition since they couldn't carry plates and utensils with them easily. This is the origin according to Google.

boodle fight. Kamayan, also known as kinamot or kinamut in Visayan languages,or kinamay in Tagalog is the traditional Filipino method of eating with the bare hands. It is also used to describe the Filipino communal feast where food is served on banana leaves and eaten without utensils.

Not necessarily applicable nowadays, but you’re only “supposed” to eat with your eating hand, and not your “washing” hand. That’s why in some places, they used to cut off the right hand if you were caught stealing, so when you eat, you’re using your washing hand - the hand that cleans everything…even your behind after going #2!
