To my foreign ears, American accent is heavily influenced by Irish accent. When I first spoke with an Irish person and heard their rolling "r" I realized it was the first time I was listening that outside of the U.S. in a natural way.

My Irish accent at times will switch to Scottish for certain sounds or slowly degrades to Scottish. Makes sense I guess since Scottish at least mildly resembles English most of the time
@MrVidification7 жыл бұрын
Try comparing highland Scottish gaelic speakers compared to Irish gaelic speakers. When speaking english, the harsher central Scotland accents that end on a high note after most sentences (eg some strong Glasgwegian) can have a notable similarity. Liverpool in England also had notable Irish migration in it's history, the influence is definitely there in the accent. Of course even in one town you will get different ranges in sound. Scottish and Irish can be hard to tell apart when the one's speaking have a weaker accent, but normally you can tell them apart fairly easily. Just don't use Hollywood actors attempting Irish or Scottish for any comparisons. lol

It's hilarious that every time a Facts. contributor tries an American accent, it's always, "Ay, I'm wawlking heer!" Seems a bit like our "top o' the marnin" or "I think I lost me shamrocks!" I find it endearing. :) Especially considering they tend to be better at a Jersey accent than we Americans are at an Irish accent. It's near impossible! They make such strange shapes with their mouths to sound the same letters!

The Irish are the most critical of anyone doing an Irish accent. I had a friend from Cork who went off on Devil's On. He destroyed Brad Pitt. But then he really laid into Paul Ronan (Saoirse Ronan's father). I let him go on for a while until I informed him he was born in UK and raised in Ireland. In fact, he speaks fluent Irish.

I'd like to point out; for almost each different actual Irish person, One of at least Three always sounded a little different then the others. So... counties really make a big difference. To the point where it's sometime boarder-line Scottish. Or at least, sounds ... more 'Hollywood Irish' than the other counties.
