Yesterday we took a bunch of our friends out in Chicago to try one of the highest rated Chicken Shops in the States - a Korean Fried Chicken place called Crisp! And as a Korean restaurant - they gave us Kimchi with our Chicken, and so they gave it a try!

Never understood why people act so weirded out when they hear the word 'fermented' .... ^_^. People have been fermenting things for millenia now, europeans included. Pickles, cabbage, peppers and the list goes on and on. How else would you expect people to eat during winter when they had no refrigerator :). Let alone every alcohol there is. Is it because people in western countries don't do it anymore? I know eastern Europe does it a lot even now
@grape1829

Mogosan Andrei Haha probably because the term fermented is usually reserved for weird foods. Tell them kimchi is pickled cabbage and they'll think it's fine, lol.
@tdelioncourt1268
@tdelioncourt1268 6 жыл бұрын
Yup, the word "fermented" has a negative connotation, we use it for very strong food that most people don't like. (actually it's okay with alcohol) We'd rather say aged or matured, implying it turned great. ^^ So when you say "oh it's fermented food" they expect it will taste weird.

Well put it this way - fermented foods (at least from a Westerner's experience - my own) are not typically eaten. However, I grew up eating Sauerkraut a lot which is pickled cabbage. To a lot of people, Sauerkraut has a strong vinegar taste which they don't like, but I love. I didn't try Kimchi until this year (I'm 21), and the fermentation process is totally different - it has a strong flavour that I'm not used to eating. I think that's why people get a little apprehensive, because the fermentation process usually makes a strong flavour and if you're not used to it, it can be overbearing.

Thing is, kim chi isn’t really meant to be eaten just alone. It is a complementary bite to an entire Korean meal, and I think that’s a huge difference. I wouldn’t just pull out a bowl of kim chi and eat it, but having Korean food without kim chi is like having no ketchup or something

I love Kimchi - And I'd have to say Korean cuisine is up there with some of the best in the world - a truly underated, 'hidden' great food culture. Koreans love their food as much as any European nation. Every region has its own specialies which also has an alcohilic accompaniment. (Koreans also love their alcohol! - in a big way!) I had a lot of fun during the time I spent in Korea -many great food (and drink) memories!

I’ve always wanted to try it but I haven’t. I lived in a Korean neighborhood for a few years back in 2010. I loved the people, very nice, Family oriented and hard working. Great people. When I would walk by all the cafes during the summer you could smell the Kimchi from the street and it just had an overwhelming smell I did not like. So, it prevented me from trying it.

It taste like pickles in some way but healthier since its fermented, its very hard to describe the flavor, but its something I can't live without now. Specially when eating oily and fatty foods. It is easy to make too, so I make my own, which is perfect cause you can cater it to your taste, if you like salty kimchi, kimchi that is a bit sweeter, kimchi that is hot af, or kimchi that is not spicy at all. You can also ferment it the way you want, some want fresh kimchi and doesnt want it fermented, I like the 2 day fermented kimchi, some wants kimchi that are well fermented, the more fermented it is the more sour it gets, but the more the flavors mesh together, kimchi like these are perfect for soups and stews and fried rice.

It tastes like a pickle and somewhat feels cool, and it's strong fragrance will stick in your mouth will feel somewhat freshness and for me it makes me want to eat it more, of course depending on who made it. some store kimchi could taste fresh and stingy but good and some other will be just a trash. in Indonesia it's similar as eating Asinan in a bigger chunck and less spicier but more stronge fragrance and not sweet.

Rara SNWJ There are so many spicy and salty fermented foods in Korea. Kimchi is one of them. There are many kinds of Kimchi. Kimchi is just a side dish in Korea where rice is a staple. There are many kinds of side dishes in Korea. There is also a great diversity of neumsik .. Including, of course, foods that are not palatable to Westerners. For example, raw fish such as raw fish, sliced raw fish, skate raw skate, and pupa are usually spicy, but they are not spicy and have a soft taste. The reason why Kimchi is good is because it has more lactobacillus in the intestines. Korean foods are abundant for health as they try to preserve their natural taste through relatively simple recipes, especially because nutrition is very important. In other words, food is viewed as a medicine. Of course, except for things like westernized chicken, pizza, and Korean barbecue ... Also, Korean food is said to have fermented food, but they prefer to be aged for a long time and cooked and served relatively quickly. Because there are so many kinds of side dishes. These are quite different from the way people cook for a long time by adding a lot of spices and spices on the spot, and they may not be good for the West at first, but they can be constantly eaten.

I guess I'm one of the few that loved kimchi the first time I tried it. Which is odd since I dislike other fermented vegetables like sauerkraut. Kimchi is just so deliciously tangy and spicy without being overwhelming to the palette. Mmm...

Just made my first batch at home. The first two containers I tried were bought at a local store. The taste, while *most* agreeable - was not nearly as intense for flavor as I’d heard. I’d almost call both containers rather bland. The home-made stuff, though - *It is NOT bland.* It has a much stronger taste, strong enough that it might well need time to acquire the same degree of liking. It’s quite a bit hotter, too. I’m wondering if I did it wrong.
