Nelson was a local (ish) boy. Went to school in Norwich. A great day trip out for you is to his home village of Burnham Thorpe, just a few miles inland from the North Norfolk coast. Great pub there much unchanged from Nelson’s time which serves some very good food. Nelson held a party in the pub in1793 to celebrate being appointed captain to a ship of the line. Hasn’t changed much since then.

I often encourage Americans visiting the UK to head up the eastern side, through Essex (where I now live) up to Suffolk and on to Norwich, Cromer and the beautiful Broads and coast. But no, most are heading up to York and places like that - understandable but they're missing out. So it was great to see this pop up. I went to University in Norwich, spent many a rowdy night in the Adam and Eve, walked and cycled those streets so many times. As to pronouncing the name . . . the real locals will say 'Naarch'. True story: I was on my first teaching practice in a school on the Norwich outskirts. On Monday morning the class had to write a little diary of what they had done during the weekend. (This is a deadly dull activity since most children never do anything remotely interesting at the weekend.) But anyway, they were all writing away when a little girl came up to me and asked how to spell the word 'sharpen'. I wrote it out neatly in her spelling book, she copied it out three times, and then went back to her desk. At the end of the session, some of the children volunteered to stand up and read their diaries out, and I picked that one little girl as I was curious why she was using the word 'sharpen'. Had she sharpened her pencils? Had her dad sharpened an axe or something? She cleared her throat. "On Sat'dy oi went sharpen in Naarch."

The "wonky" buildings are like that because they are hundreds of years old. Of course, they were built square, but timbers have warped and joints have moved over that time. Very good editing BTW. Thank you.

The 'w' in Norwich is silent here (we say Norrich). You've almost got it. Grew up near here. In the summer we used to do the ghost boat tour which was good fun. There are lots of mediaeval cobbled streets in Norwich and it is the home of Coleman's mustard (my favourite). Also a lot of mediaeval churches (Henry VIII's wreckers didn't really bother to come out to Norfolk much) survive. As teenagers of course, we were mainly interested in the shops and night life!

Hiya. Bit of trivia - the Dukes of Norfolk have been the only remaining Catholic members of the English Aristocracy. This state of affairs is known as 'recusancy'. Ironically, it's said Duke who's responsible for organising State occasions, such as Coronations, Funerals and the State Opening of Parliament. Don't forget to shield your dog from all the bangs and noise this evening/tonight. Stay safe. All the best to you.

Thanks for our day out in Norwich today, thoroughly enjoyable, although there is much more to see. Edith Cavell is a 'modern day' English martyr, and part of her education took place here in Peterborough. There is a tendency these days to romanticize her name to Ca-Vell. Her contemporaries would have known her as Nurse Cavl. A true heroine, and I too have made a pilgrimage to her grave. It will soon be surrounded by Poppies as Armistice Day, 11th November, approaches. Please be sure and wear yours as honorary Britons. Where was Chris's cap, did he forget to take it? xx PS. Just the right time of year to visit the American War Cemetery, at Madeley near Cambridge!

@DaydreamersBarn Once upon a time they used to say that Norwich had a pub for each day of the year, and a church for every Sunday. There are some fantastic examples of churches in Norwich. Next time you go, look for St Peter Mancroft, next to the market, and there are several pubs around there too. 😀

I don't know if it was explained but when Norwich Cathedral was built a canal was constructed from Pull's Ferry to the construction site (down Ferry Lane). Stone from France was brought up the river Wensum and then up the canal. Timber was also brought in this way. It was the easiest way to transport heavy loads at that time. The arch of the Pull's Ferry building spanned the canal.

I'm surprised that it wasn't suggested that you walk down Elm Hill which leads to the cathedral. It's a famously beautiful medieval street. Strangers' Hall (only open Wednesdays and Sundays) is also a lovely place, a fascinating mixture of periods and styles. Nelson is often considered to be England's greatest hero and is also known as The Norfolk Hero since he was born in the area. Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London, commemorates him: he was killed by a sniper at the decisive sea Battle of Trafalgar against Napoleon whilst on the deck of his flag ship, The Victory. This great ship is still open to the public in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard and it is worth a trip there, perhaps by train, since the Harbour Station, Portsmouth, is right next to this fantastic site which contains such famous historic ships as Henry VIII's Mary Rose, dredged up from the bottom of the Solent, and The Warrior, the world's first iron fighting ship. My favourite cathedral is Ely, also in East Anglia. The town is very pretty too and contains the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, who led us into a Civil War which resulted in the execution of the king and the establishment of a republic. (It only lasted 20years: when Cromwell died, we wanted our monarchy back.)

I live - and grew up - just around the corner from Norwich, in North Lincolnshire. I can`t believe I`ve never been to that city. In fact, I don`t believe I have not been to that city - even having absolutely no recollection of the place as seen in this video. Close enough Jess. Norwich is pronounce Norrich. The W is silent..... Now that is a *real* English pub! Most historical places forbid flash photography Jess, as hundreds of intense flashes over time would eventually begin to fade the colour of paintings, stained glass, etc.....We are fortunate to have all this history here Jess. There is a large private school in a small rural town about 10 miles from me, which recently celebrated it's 500th year.....
