I used to live in Godalming years back so Guildford was a huge part of my teenage years. I remember loads of bomb threats, we got to used to them. The people in the know must think bins are still a problem down there. I live in Chester now and they have bins mind you it was never bombed.

I remember when the IRA bombed Warrington, by placing the bombs in bins outside high street shops, killing two children. Bins seem to have come back now in most towns and cities in the North but I guess London is always a prime target for a wide range of disgruntled lunatics.

That's not true. Plenty of London stations and other public London places have bins that use transparent bags hanging from a ring, so if a large dangerous object was inside it would be more visible.

In the 70s I was in the Welsh Guards (the ones with the Bearskin hats), a few times we did royal duties at Buckingham Palace and the Gurkhas were changing the guard with us, some of them were so small that they only came up to our shoulders when we stood side by side when relieving the guard, but that's very deceptive as they are fearsome warriors in battle.

That river is one of the cleanest rivers in the world. The reason it looks that colour is because it’s a clay-based river so every time the tide comes in and goes out it’s stirs up the clay that makes the river look that colour but if you take a glass of water from the river and leave it for a few hours the clay would sink to the bottom and the water would be completely clear.

I'm having such fun watching you two grazing your way round London. Fyi, the guard "without the fuzzy hat" is one of the Gurkha rifleman who come from Nepal, in Asia. When the British conquered India they then pushed north and tried to overrun Nepal. After much long and bloody fighting (rifles against heavy sharp knives called kukris), the British commanders realised that it was better and safer to have the Gurkhas on our side. They have been a highly valued part of the British Army ever since. Also, when you were at Borough Market, the large church just by the side is Southwark Cathedral which is where William Shakespeare used to worship when he was working at the Globe Theatre, just along the river....................................the ancient Englishman.

river's brown as its estuarine (read: muddy). It was actually considered the cleanest urban river in the world for a short period -where it was said if you let the silt sink to the bottom you could safely drink it - until about a decade ago -now not so much as we have a sewer overflow problem (skyrocketing population growth of 120,000 a year) whenever there's heavy rain. The $7 billion Super Sewer will fix that... if ever it gets finished.

Previously so clean it even had a fishing industry, the Thames became so polluted from Victorian times that it was a biological hazard. The 'Great Stink' in 1859 meant Parliament had to be suspended. Innovative sewage schemes were put in place, and the river improved. It got better from the 1960s but if you fell in it then you still needed innoculating against several diseases.

The guards weren’t wearing their fuzzy hats because they weren’t queens guards. The city of london is almost like it’s own country - it was the only part of England that William the Conqueror failed to conquer and has remained separate ever since. It has its own police force, it’s own representative in UK parliament, its own laws, and even the queen has to ask the Lord Mayor to enter the city.

Did someone point out that the sunken bit around the tower was a moat and that is where the toilet emptied into. There is a tale that they used a curved ended stick to clean their bums and this would be leant up against the wall when not in use. At night if the stick had fallen over, one could get 'Hold of the wrong end of the stick'. Hence the expression.

The river is brown because its silty (fine muddy sediments /particulates suspended in water) rather than necessarily polluted. Many rivers part of estuary deltas across the world appear brown - and in fact they can be haven for life - as sediment can mean nutrients washed out from inland. A clear river could conceivably be in lower lifeless state than muddy brown one. Anyway London Thames would have looked the same colour to the Romans as it does today - although it would have been in healtheir state.

Borough Market is pronounced 'Burra', for your erudition as you seem to be perfecting your accents! :) When we visited a daughter there, my wife was outraged at the cost of food! Bit of a scary time for us. Said daughter was living in student accommodation on the guy's Hospital campus on the other side of the road. She and fellow students oft patronised the pubs, bars and market there, the sight of the ISIS Islamic extremist attack in 2017. We couldn't get through on her phone. Luckily she was on a night shift placement at a different hospital that night. Some of her fellow students there though rushed over to help the many injured, consequently suffering traumatic reaction for some time afterward .

There are plenty of bins, though not on bridges, which is where you were filming when you made the observation. There is a bit of a hangover from the 70s and 80s in some areas. At that time, IRA bomb threats were a real concern. A lot of bins were removed from transport hubs and major tourist areas, in order to help counter this threat. A few of these places, especially some train and tube stations, have yet to return to the same 'bin level' as before. Though bin emtying and cleaning tends to be fairly regular in such places. :)

Not sure where in the video you’re referencing, but yes, we are aware Romans left the area in early 5th century.

You are comparing a city with a much higher concentration of people to an entire (much larger) county with a smaller population. London is not the dirtiest city I’ve been to by far.

I left London in 1976. When we go back I think it is clean compared to then whilst my wife feels the opposite!

Your English accents are actually quite good, but unfortunately from the 1960s. FWIW, most people wouldn't actually notice. You won't find bins anywhere. They're ideal recepticals to hide terrorist bombs, and most were removed in the 1970s/1980s during the height of IRA bombings (at the time there were a number of bins made from cast iron which was the worst type of bin for producing shrapnel). You're kinda expected to take litter home with you now.
