Marge Vattendahl Bong Drucker died at 79 in September of 2003. She was 21 when Dick died. She didn't know that he had died until she heard the news on the radio from her Burbank, California apartment. She went on to become a successful model and magazine publisher. In the 1980's, she was invited to the dedication of the 'Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge' in Duluth, Minnesota. Her daughter said she was "treated like a rock star". She also built the "Richard I. Bong World War II Heritage Center" in Superior, Wisconsin....which is now the "Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center". She was cremated and buried next to Dick at Poplar Cemetery in Poplar, Wisconsin.

There is a Wisconsin State Park in Lake Geneva, I know you know where Alpine Valley Music Theater is, called...... "Bong Recreation Area". The sign for it gets stolen all the time.

German fighter aces of world war 2 some of them had 300 to 400 kills to their names, adolf galand to name one

That was one of the best reactions I have seen ever seen. I have been a huge fan of American aces since I was 12. I am 62 now. Of course Bong's story was at the top of the list. His teaming up with Lynch and them being allowed to do whatever they wanted was such an amazing thing considering the military and their disciplinary ways. Lynch's death was tragic but was one of many American aces during the war. At the time of Lynch's death, another top ace in the running for top ace was also lost. Col. Neal Kearby who flew the P-47 which was better known for flying in Europe. He had 22 at the time of his death. The top two scoring aces in Europe flew P-47's and also flew in the same fighter group and squadron. The second highest scoring ace of WWII and all time for America was another P-38 pilot named Maj. Thomas McQuire who scored 38 aerial victories. Whenever Bong was sent home to sell war bonds, they grounded McQuire so he wouldn't pass Bong up while he was in America. Politics doing what they do best even during the biggest war this world has ever seen. McQuire was most of the time 8 kills behind Bong earning him the nickname "8 behind." Well on January 7th, 1945, McQuire was flying with another experienced pilot and two new ones. A top Japanese ace who I forgot his name and was very rare that late in the war cause pretty much all of their aces had already been killed, came at them head on. As they passed, the Japanese ace managed to get on the tail of the other experienced pilots tail. McQuire did something he knew wasn't a good idea, he banked left sharply trying to get on the tail of the Japanese pilots tail and because the P-38's had drop tanks on them, McQuires P-38 stalled and barreled rolled into the jungle killing him. The Japanese ace managed to shot down the other experienced pilot and the two rookie pilots had to tell the story of McQuires and the other pilots deaths. By this time, Bong was already out of the war as told in this video. Before his death, McQuire was able to get very close to Bongs score of 40 kills. There is a picture out there of both of these two amazing aces standing together. 78 kills between the two men. I knew what was coming at the end and seeing how much you were enjoying Bong's story, I knew what ended up happening to Bong would knock your feet out from underneath you. Seeing you blindsided like that, brought a tear to my eye as Bong's story always does. Happening on the same day the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan was pretty ironic. Pretty much took the importance of his death away from the public's eyes. But that is who Bong was. Never wanting the spotlight and as he said many times himself, he was just doing his job. It's great to see a ladies interest and appreciation for a topic like this one. Take care always and stay safe.
