Yes! Like I accept that my dog doesn't like other dogs invading her bubble. And she isn't a social butterfly. That is ok. Despite what some see as flaws, she is such a good dog who loves to play and please through work. She has such a unique personality and I love it.
@alexandriarobles35372 жыл бұрын
I agree! People often forget that personalities play a part and it’s unfair to try and force your dog to be something they’re not. Having a dog that doesn’t particularly like strange dogs or strange people is okay! It’s how they react and deal with that distaste that matters, that’s where the training comes it and the handling ❤️

I used to be against E collars and prong collars, I've seen shock collars put on puppies for board and trains who came back to their owners a quivering mess, but you've completely changed my perspective on them because of your intelligent explanations and experience in using such equipment, I wish more trainers were as open minded and tuned into dogs as you, I live in England I wish I had you around with our first dog, long story! I work every day with dogs myself, my passion couldn't imagine my life any different. I'd love to pick your brain, and learn from you.

Tom's common sense is so refreshing! Why should the dog meet people if she doesn't care to? I I have know too many trainers who were willing to force every dog and handler to do a specific list of unnecessary things - like, The dog should never walk in front of you. Of course if you're walking two dogs on the street with no sidewalks, that would put you in the middle of the street.

I really appreciate the emphasis on the safety reasons around using a prong. It’s a really tough topic to get understanding from people who’ve not dealt with a dog that benefits from the help! My dog is anxious and people assume it’s overkill if they see one on him, but he gets excited when we put it on to go walk. The response from people when they see a prong or ecollar and assume what they’re used for or how, really creates anxiety for ME more than any of the above create it for my dog.

Same the only real reason at this point that my corso St. Bernard wears a print on walks is his fear of certain objects, like storm grates that cause him to bolt out to the side if he thinks I’ll make him cross it.

I adopted a rescue dog in December and Tom’s videos have been my go-to training reference. My dog is a Malinois mix who is leash reactive and these videos have saved us! I just got my first compliment from a stranger on our walk saying how well behaved she is. Never thought that would happen considering the place we were at with lunging, barking, pulling and snarling just a few months ago. No Bad Dog army 💕
@vmccracken23792 жыл бұрын
So much of the training is actually working on the people and how they learn to read and work with their dog. I love how you mentioned not all dogs have social personalities. You said it different, but not all dogs want to be touched by strangers and that is okay! I don't allow strangers to come up and touch my kids or myself so I'm not sure why people think it's okay to touch a persons dog.

I liked how you said that Maui isn’t ready to be more social at that moment but it’s not a never! I had a trainer tell me my dog will never not be reactive and it was pretty discouraging. This helps me to realize it can just take time and hard work, but it’s possible for them to progress! Thank you for these videos!
@sportysbusiness2 жыл бұрын
It is possible and yes, it can take time. I got an 18 month old rescue with terrible leash reactivity, I was told numerous times to get rid of her. Fast forward 4 years and she's a gem, I trust her around all dogs. Be patient, trust the process and remember your energy down the leash is a big part of the rehabilitation process. Good luck.

Love what you said about how training can look flashy with certain dogs and not so flashy with big “slower” dogs. Still the same training results, it just looks different for different dogs. It’s also so important for owners to understand that they can’t make their dog be something they’re not or like things they don’t.

We recently had some guff online from a random person from another city claiming to be a pet trainer about our use of a prong with our German Shepherd. As an owner, it feels irresponsible to not use whatever tool is most effective for any specific dog. So good on these owners for sticking to what worked best for their dog instead of getting guilted into using something that could have led to a dangerous situation for both them and the dog.

You're the best; I've never met a dog trainer who takes the time and helps dog owners understand why problems are occurring and how to fix them but also provide the dogs prospective as well. It is truly amazing that you also show square one training the owners as well as teaching owners why, how, and when you use the training equipment. I have learned a lot since I came across your channel. I have always wanted to become a dog trainer just because most trainers don't want to take the time to understand dogs' behavior and never try to help save dogs from being euthanized because they're "aggressive" when in not all but the majority of cases are dogs who are unsure or just need to have structure. I have a Siberian Husky who can be very hard-headed at times off leash, but we continue to work on it! Thankful for your channel; it definitely helps. Keep up the great work, you all!

Wonderful to watch, I have a lab/golden mix that has a tendency to not listen and I am a 69 year old woman alone that isn't very good at consistency. She is a year and a half and chews on everything and when I ask her to drop it she just looks at me and keeps chewing! She is very smart and thinks I am playing a game. when I take her to the vet she pulls me everywhere, when I go for a walk using a cart or walker she is very good and watches where I am going. Like I said she is smart.

I just want to thank you, for creating this amazing content. I have a 2 years old Saint Bernard dog and he wasn't very eager to learn. Three different trainers told me that there is no point of trying to teach him anything, because he 's too lazy. It turned out that he is not lazy at all I just didn't know how to handle him :) Greetings from Finland!

I love watching your videos. I’ve gotten a puppy in hopes to owner train her to be a psychiatric service dog for my anxiety, PTSD, and depression. She, admittedly, wasn’t the best breed to pick as she’s a malamute/husky/lab/Bernese mountain dog, but I loved meeting her family. Mom, dad, and two older brothers were all so calm and very well behaved. Im having trouble with her sassiness that she’s got already, but my goodness she’s a sweetheart! I was trying all positive reinforcement training and while it works for some things it’s really not working for others. Now, I’m here binging your videos to try and help me do this right and do right by this pup! Good luck to everyone and thank you Tom for all the tools, easy to understand explanations, and wealth of knowledge you have.
