My dog likes most people, but is wary of them first. She does fine once they’re introduced properly. She loves cats. Will play with them all day long. She hates other dogs. She used to be very reactive at the sight of one but I was able to socialize her enough to be fine when just a few feet away. She just doesn’t like it when other dogs get in her space and run up to her. I want to be able to let her play with other dogs and not pick her up everytime someone else’s dog comes up to us. I don’t have anyone to practice with. I’m a college student and she lives with me in the dorms or in an apartment and behaves well most of the time. She knows basic commands and is crate trained and house trained. I don’t have money for training, but Im slowly making progress with her.

@alexisanglin
@alexisanglin 5 жыл бұрын
Tony Tennessee Very big mistake protection training an unstable dog. They should have a sound temperament and well balanced mental state, along with good drive to do such a task. You can “fix” any aggressive behavior in a dog. At least that’s my opinion, and it’s been proven. I have many ideas of how to “fix” such problem but I’m sure Thomas has described such topic many a time before. I would basically reintroduce your dog to things she’s fearful of. Is sounds like fear aggression based on the very little detail you gave. And before she’s able to react or as you notice her to act aggressively, correct it. Discourage that behavior. Also, I would improve your status with your dog. Be clear and show them that they are not in control. The dogs should be checking in with you to know that they are doing something okay; reassurance. Also, improve your obedience. I have a command of “look at me” when I need their attention to follow through with another command. All in all; improve your relationship, and training.
@tonyadams09
@tonyadams09 5 жыл бұрын
@@alexisanglin I actually rescued her from a kill shelter and have basically been just advanced obidence. Even with advanced obidence she wants to eat anything that gets close enough. I have introduced her with my Mal and My Family and most friends i really trust. But I'm not comfortable letting my 8 year old Grandson around her afraid he may touch her wrong or something because she is not the clinging type if she want attention she will go to someone and want stand there very long and she will walk away and play with a toy or get in her crate.
@alexisanglin
@alexisanglin 5 жыл бұрын
Tony Tennessee Obedience means nothing if your dog isn’t actually trained. If your dog was trained in “advanced obedience” then she wouldn’t be the way she is. You need to show her who’s boss. Put her in submissive posture and give her the bad finger with a stern no. Don’t let her get up until she’s calm and has relaxed posture. I dont know what to tell you; I haven’t witnessed your dog. But I do know that submissive posture can fix anything “bad” in a dog that can be “fixed.” Don’t be mean, and frustrated about it; she will pick up on it. If she knows to lay down on Command, you tell her to lay down, roll over on her side; to show her stomach, but not all the way over with stomach completely facing up. Just on her side. You put your finger up; like you did something bad finger; pointing at her, and tell her no. With a stern, firm, commanding voice. Let her relax and continue as she does what you don’t like. Give her a warning; you say no, she soonest listen, you say no again and she doesn’t listen; bam, submissive posture. You might not agree with this, but it works with any dog I’ve been with. It’s not abusive or over the top; it’s dog language.

It sucks so much that my dog is the sweetest little baby when he's at home, when people come greet him when we're out, but just the sight of another dog makes him go insane, like crazy barking and like jumping towards the dogs to get them. Like there were occasions he was like chill and i was so relived, but then tried to bite the other dog's face right away.

First off - cool van & Cool Carhart beanie. Thanks for all you do. We just rescued a absolutely gorgeous black female GSD. We are her 3rd family. We aren’t giving up but our challenges are major fear aggression with others who come to our house and when we are walking her outside other animals and people walking. We are praying it all works out. We are utilizing all your amazing knowledge base to learn and grow as owners to give her the best opportunity to be a successful happy loved dog. She’s super smart and trainable. So I’m hopeful. Thanks again man for all you do. Hopeful to meet you one day with our dog Aspen!

I have one of those GSD too... we have been together for going on nine years. I rent a cottage with a huge field that she has had dog free for going on six years. She is on a 30 foot lead (paracord), always supervised, runs, plays ball, checks out the moles, and hangs out in the garden. The landlord now has a two year old Boxer rescue which has full run of the field at all times of the day... sadly, we have to text when we need a dog free space. I am working with her to ignore the other dog, but dread if the Boxer comes running at her. I am sure we will get it figured, but it is a pain right now.It has been a long process for sure ~ Take care

Fantastic dog advise. On walks, I try to urge other people and their dogs to just walk along together, at appropriate distance to give both dogs chance to calm and relax, plus you can see if either or both dogs can be sociable. In a safe way ! Not to many people understand or want to try this.

Hello again Tom, this is another informative video. So many people don't think about their dogs liking and not liking other dogs. I tell people, we don't like everyone either 😊. I also agree about the Dog Parks to many people are in denial that they have a dominant or aggressive dog and then they take them to the park. So I will tell people to go to the dog park when nobody's there get your exercise play with your dog and be safe. I have also used the distraction of the dogs in the park while training a dog on the outside of the fence if we can't get distractions anywhere else. Thank you Tom have a wonderful day. Dawn

I got so discouraged with myself when I rescued a girl pit bull who had been separated from her puppy and separated from her mate and all the other dogs she knew moved from Mexico then to Texas before making its way to Massachusetts. It made me feel really bad about myself as a dog owner. Eventually I spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars in dog training Alta learn something that you explained in a 7 minute long video. She's well-adjusted now that she spent some time and her forever home but we still meet other dogs for the first time with a chain link fence between us and I have learned that I also need to test the waters a little bit more. Thanks for the video

(like'' horrible to use a prong coller'' or if I recall my dog to put the leash on because I saw other friendly dogs are running up to us but I'm not sure my dog is ok with them, then ''oh you sould let them play or your dog is not friendly?! If my dog bark to others then people says''oh scary dog!!'' etc...) I hate people's judge!! We don't have dog park here UK but most field are like dog park.... We have many dog parks here in Vienna/Austria- I avoid every single one of them! Most dog owners misunderstand the idea behind it, think that it is enough to let their dogs run around and get their exercise for the day, while standing there on their phone or talking to other dog owners without ever looking to see what their dog is up to,....I will not expose my dog to something so uncontrolled like that. I rather walk and work WITH my dog! Thank you for your Videos! Great Info!

Every person who purchases/adopts a dog should have to listen to this video and sign a piece of paper saying they understand this!!! I have what you refer to as an "anxiety" Shep. (Yes, we've seen a behaviorist) He was 'attacked' (by your definition on one of your recent videos) by an American Fox Hound (when he was 10 weeks old) that was on a retractable leash and the owner wasn't paying close enough attention to stop her dog. Then again by an Australian Shepherd (when he was 13 weeks old). The Ausie bolted out its front door when a child opened it as we were walking in our neighborhood. Now I have a 73 lb dog that doesn't play well with other dogs. All of this to say... I've also had other dogs in our neighborhood that aren't on lead come running at my dog (the owner yelling it's ok he/she is friendly). AND ME YELLING BACK BUT MINE HAS BEEN BITTEN BY ANOTHER DOG AND I'M NOT SURE HOW HE WILL RESPOND. (1. Our county has a leash law. 2. I have a yellow ribbon on his lead - to give heads up to other owners to give us space. 3. When I'm walking him I'll move off the walking path to give the other dog space to pass - to put space between my dog and the other so he doesn't become responsive.) Anyway... I love your videos and they are extremely informative. I've used many of your tips to help me be a better owner. He has come a very long way (now 17 months old), from his fear issues, but we still have a way to go. Thank you so very much for taking the time to make these videos and sharing your insight!!!

Your advice just set my mind at ease. I took my dog, a 2 yos Labrador Retriever, to a swimming pool earlier today and as usual, he didn’t seem to notice that there were other dogs around. In the waiting area there was a well mannered female Labrador who approached him nicely inviting him to play, he growled at her fiercely so, she backed off. Later in the eveningI took him for a walk in the neighborhood, he fetched the ball I threw for him then he went to the Golden Retriever who stood quietly, in the leash, with his owner. They sniffed at each other briefly, the GR seemed friendly and calm but my dog started growling and acted as if he was going to bite (He doesn’t bite any dog or human but like to act tough). I was so embarrassed and apologized to the owner. I am sitting here in front of the iPad searching on the topic about why my dog is so unfriendly. 😂😂😂

I wish we could share GSD pics. (Smile) I taught my girl Aspen 3 new tricks last night. (2.5years rescue in Jan 2019, we are 3rd family) She is amazing. Stunning coloring, eyes, energy, intrigue, sniffing capabilities, Braun and Brain! She was never socialized properly by her temperament. So our slip collar is not working - even tried a smaller one so it was higher on her neck as it should be... but she seems to be getting more protective with us at home with anything outside and on walks. We kinda haven’t had guests over since the first week we got her. She goes ballistic out of fear, nips off leash inside house or lunges on leash. We even tied doing a GSD pack walk but she barked at the others and pulled a ton the whole time. It made it unenjoyable.

My dog used to be the fluid type, but is slowly becoming the toy possessive type. We used to be able to go to any dog park and have the most fun!! Now we only go to the small one in my complex if Cleo’s “family” is there. I’m glad I found this video, because every time my dog got into a scrap with another dog, it made me question her actual personality. How can I curb her toy possessiveness now? I am lucky to have a super balanced dog. She’s a GSD mix. I belong to a dog park group. We are all responsible parents who supervise our dogs. We are like helicopter parents at the dog park. Our dogs all know each other because we are at the park at least 3 times a week. All new dog park members learn quick that they have to be responsible. (Or have to take their dog out of the park.). I can see where dog parks can be dangerous to dogs. You have to stop problems before they start. If there is a dog fight, it’s the humans fault.

I have such a hard time with people not understanding this. I live in Seattle, so it’s very common for dog owner’s to be without backyards due to apartment life. There aren’t many good dog parks, so most people end up letting their dogs off leash at regular parks, that are not technically off leash areas. I’m in the same boat as these people, so I utilize these spaces for exercising my GSD as well, but I actively avoid the main area where all the dogs socialize, and keep my dog on a long lead at all times. She is good with certain types of dogs in the right context, such as with her friends at daycare, but I never take her to the park with the intention of socializing her. So it’s unbelievably frustrating when people have a complete lack of respect for our space and assume she is friendly and looking for a playmate. I’m lucky she isn’t aggressive, although she will charge and show frustration when our training gets interrupted. It seriously baffles me how often I am encountered by off leash dogs with little to no obedience as their owners remain completely nonchalant about how little control they have over the situation. I don’t understand how it seems worth the risk to anyone to give their dog complete freedom when they don’t reliably come when called... I hope to someday have an open space all to myself without having to worry about this.

Most of the time it is dogs she has seen before. She will bark a lot and she lunches at them. She doesn’t bite - but she can be rather intimidating to both other dogs and humans 😕 Off leash she is a totally different dog - happy and sweet... It doesn’t matter who is handling her, she will react in the same way 😕 What can I do to chance her behavior around other dogs.

Thank you so much for this. I felt so discouraged today, because I have wanted to get my 1 year old border collie/husky cross more socialized and more exercised, because we live in town and he just gets over excited around dogs and won't listen to me. Either other dogs target him or get triggered by him, or he is being too dominant. He is very smart but he has the "pesky little brother" mentality. I have worked with him at home a lot. I had this expectation that he should be more like the other dogs at the dog park I have started trying this week. He is good at home or with people; and he has been fine with bigger farm animals. I have started to give him less unearned privileges because he tends to "want his way" more than he should. I will know now that if I go to the dog park - I should try to go really early or late, and take him at the same time so he can just get used to one or two dogs at once. There are lots of other walking trails. I guess, he just requires so much free running that I wanted him in an enclosed large area. He is not an escape artist but he is definitely very athletic. Negative training works opposite with him. I tried a pinch collar on him - the 2.5 and didn't phase him. I tried a shock collar once at a lower setting with the beeper and vibrate first, and I think it would make him vicious because his reaction wasn't the positive reaction I was hoping for. The vibrate is ok. But the shock was useless. He is a very nice, loving, humorous rough and tumble pup. And he would love to play with other dogs - but then his instinct to be in the lead or push his way gets in the way or dogs react negatively with him. He has been neutered but he doesn't act like it. This video helps because I can see I was expecting too much and can be satisfied with him having fewer interactions with dogs in a less reactive setting. His breed qualities are great working dog qualities, but he isn't a golden retriever type.

Thank you this was so helpful. I was so disappointed that my new dog was growling at other new dogs she would meet. I was told by her previous owners that she growled at big pushy dogs but in fact she gets nervous around any new dog. I wanted one of the dogs that loves everyone they meet but at least everything else about her is perfect for me :) my issue is wanting her to meet my friend’s dogs but being afraid she might hurt them :(

Hi I’m a new subscriber and I’m so glad I found your channel from mexico. I’ve been watching your channel specifically some subject that I had doubt and it is helping me a lot. Your advice is so real. I have 2 diffrent problems. I adopted a dog she was found in street, stayed en shelter for couple of month and finally came to us now it’s been a year. We don’t know the breed, she is large breed black dog. I thought that she would like / friendly to other dogs since she was in a shelter but she is not. And she barks a lot, too much when she sees other dog especially bigger than she is. Even to the people.( but not all the dogs or people) She just snaps. Barking lunging jumping like crazy. She is better than before and she is clever so it’s easy to train her only it is hard to control when she losts her mind. And also she is very territorial. That’s the one main big problem I have and the other problem is another dog we have. Jaja he is lab. So sweet but we take for a walk he is pulling me like crazy with his power. We put a chain on his neck Obviously it hurts but he keeps pulling me. I want to walk them together but I can’t because one keeps pulling me and the other will snap anytime she sees something. I really appreciate any advice you could give.

Usually its more about knowing how to greet aka a well socialized dog. If you do not socialize them as a pup, they do not learn how to approach other dogs on equal footing. Puppies learn very quickly that you can't run up to another dog. If your puppy gets growled at at a dog park GOOD! That dog is teaching your puppy to back off. If your dog's growls at a pup who is way to hyper. ..that's a good thing. Never correct them of they are a balanced dog and trust your own dogs instincts. A well balanced dog always recognizes when the other dog is unbalanced or out-of-control. If your dog avoids another dog...trust them! If your dog never learned how to properly greet strange dogs then you have to be the one to help them

My Shiba Inu dog only plays with dogs he is familiar with. When an unfamiliar dog gets into his space wanting to play with him, he communicates to the unfamiliar dog to "go away" by getting "snarly" towards that dog. Thank you for letting me know that this is normal and ok. My question is how do I get my dog to be more social around house guests? I do not want to lock him up away from guests who visit but I am concerned that if I let him off leash in the house around the guests he might treat them as strangers and attack them?

I have 3 five year old neutered birth brothers, raised since they were born to an island dog I rescued. They are fine around people but not other dogs. I currently have them in individual classes back in the US and they are aggressive to the other dogs who come near them. The aggression is fear based I think. I walk them each 1-1.5 miles a day and they go crazy when they see other dogs. Because of the way they were raised, my husband doesn't think they realize they are dogs. It's a real problem where we live (just moved 2 mo ago) as there are many other dogs. The teacher said their aggression was OK, they did not want the other dogs in their face. I was freaked out.

This is the story of my life!! I was feeling really discouraged about my recent adopted Shiloh Shepherd. But watching your video, helped me realize the truth in your words! Even though he is really laid back, he does chose certain dog friends and takes sometime to warm up to other dogs. There is the pressure and stigma that there is something wrong with dogs who can’t “hang” at the dog park. I’ve felt bad and thought I was doing a dis-service to him because all my dog friends said it’s the only real way to socialize your dog. I do have a smaller dog that he has taken a liking to and they have become best buds in the 1 month time that we have had him. The only thing is my adopted dog is really reactive to dogs his like and size. I want him to be at least comfortable and be able to ignore dogs that trigger this in him. What setting/environment do you recommend that I train him in other then at home (neighborhood, park, etc..) and do you recommend that I do sessions with him with my other dog around or just one on one with him and I. Thank you!! I really appreciate the time if you are able to read and reply!!

Awi Crawford did you have your dog professionally trained with the ecollar? The recall should be just about 100% with the ecollar. It’s definitely not something you can just wing that’s for sure it has to be installed properly with the right training to ensure the recall.

Upstate Canine Academy Yes we did. My dog is a Cane Corso now 5 years old. He only accepted the immediate family, and the other 4 dogs. He started going to training at 15 weeks at group training. I believe his hatred of other dogs came from being attacked by my son’s Staffie when he was 7 weeks old. The attack lasted all of seconds with a minor scratch on his nose. All of what you say in the video above is how I manage the situation. It’s quite frustrating since he is the first dog I have in over 40 years of having dogs of different breeds including a wolf hybrid. BTW, a friend has his brother, and they have the same issues with him.

My dog likes most dogs, she’s a little cautious at first but normally warms up to them and becomes very playful once she’s comfortable - UNLESS they’re higher energy (i.e. in her face, or typical puppy bouncing all over the place). When this happens she gets very defensive, tail tucked, teeth bared and barks at them, sometimes even snaps at them if they still won’t leave her alone. She’s only 6 months, what do I do? Is there a way to show her that these really playful dogs are not as scary as she thinks? Or should I respect her boundaries and try to avoid these kinds of dogs? For reference she’s a red heeler/jack russell terrier mix

She is NEVER off leash and yet we do tell people walking their dog(because they always want their dog to say hi to yours)please stay away. Is there anything else we can do when their dog comes running up instead of screaming at the people?? I have an unrelated training question. I also have an 8 1/2 month German shepherd. I thought I had her fairly well trained but I have found that I have not done as good of a job as I thought. When trying to retrain older concepts that I thought she knew, do you use food as a motivating factor and then start to train without food once they are listening again or do you keep food out of it so they don't start to only listen when you have food? One of our dogs does not like unknown dogs. I have never allowed him to greet unknown dogs on leash but he can still lunge in his leash at another dog when put into a sit stay. I correct with a slip when he does this, but I feel like I am essentially correcting that he got up from his sit stay. Does he understand that it is the lunging and snarling at the other dog that is the incorrect thing to do?
