Day Number Twelve for Emirates Team New Zealand | April 29th | America's Cup

Another day, another display from Emirates Team New Zealand, who completed their twelfth day on ‘Taihoro’ in rain-squally Auckland with some big pulses coming down the track measured at anywhere between 12-15 knots as the sailors sought Barcelona-like swell forms. They found them and for sure the analysts will be smiling at the performance data today.

As 2022 came to a close, the Ministry of Transport's road toll count reached a provisional figure of 378 people killed on New Zealand roads during the year. The 2021 and 2020 final road tolls both reached 318 road fatalities in each year - meaning this year's toll surged 60 people higher

In my humble opinion at times they are exceeding 50 knots quite easily with the older foils. Tons of room for improvement.

During some training days for the AC36, they surpassed 50kts even with _Te Rehutai._ If this is a faster boat and it should be, I expect the 50kt barrier to be broken regularly in the right conditions.

The top speed of the boats are limited by cavitation, which kicks in from about 45knots upwards. Anything over about 53 knots is pretty much impossible without super-cavitating foils. Top speeds are almost irrelevant for winning the cup as you are only likely to reach them when perpendicular to the wind, i.e. on mark roundings. VMG, i.e velocity in the direction of the mark is the key metric. You can achieve it by sailing high and slow or low and fast. There's no doubt though that below top speed, these boats will be knots faster than the old version, especially in light airs.

I'm definitely no expert but it looked like they were struggling. Fell off the foils in a turn in calmer water. Ride height was too low and the stern got sucked down a couple times in the rougher stuff. It did look like they were practising dropping the foils pretty late in the turns which was interesting. Dunno if that was on purpose or not. Would love to see the raw stats.

Don't think the ride height was too low. Looking at their previous run with older boat, it's safe to say that the height is intentional. I'm guessing up to high in rough conditions might cause the boat to capsize. Quite possibly learning how to operate and controlling the boat better with the old foils will see them sail smoother once the new foils are attached.

@@jasonpickens9839 maybe you're just reading to much into it? I fully agree that they're far from smooth sailing but that's why they're out on the water as much as possible. It would be nice to see some stats though as you stated....
