Another suggestion for a mid-day excursion is to visit nearby CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL. It's still a work in progress, but the face and head have been completed. The head of Crazy Horse alone is 27 feet taller than the six story heads of Mount Rushmore.

I visited Mount Rushmore some years ago on a warm, sunny day with a blue sky, and was positively surprised, even if the heads were a little smaller than I had expected. Some tourist attractions are rather boring and overestimated, but Mount Rushmore lived up to its reputation. A real treasure.

Every time I go there I learn something new. I first saw it with my parents and grandparents in 1952. It was far less developed then. The sculptors studio was about all that was there then along with the old observation deck. My 9 year old self was amazed by the men who swung on those trapeze like contraptions and did actual work up there! It’s always amazing to see how few Vets there are in a crowd that big. Thanks for a great video and even greater memories!

We spent 8 days hiking in the Black Hills area August 2021. Mt Rushmore was definitely the most patriotic moment I think I’ve ever experienced up to this point in life. A bucket list activity for sure. What was a surprise for me in the museum is that they have an exhibit about the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). My father served in it during 1935-36 in North Dakota as an 18 year old. Young men put to work during the Great Depression doing a lot of hard manual labor, building public and national parks. Unsung young heroes sending home their paychecks home to for families to survive. If you get more time to hike the area, you can see the back of Mt Rushmore from Black Elk Peak. Met a Lakota on the trail there who was evangelizing for Jesus. Had a wonderful talk with him but I regret not getting a picture. A strikingly noble looking human being. Go see Crazy Horse, great museum. Custer SP is a must also. Take a day to go into Wyoming and see/hike Devils Tower. The whole area was just beautiful…

Patriotic moment? Did you feel proud? If a bunch of foreigners came to Britain, conquered it, and then, to demonstrate their power and dominance, carved faces of their leaders into the White Cliffs of Dover, they would be rightly hunted down by British natives and executed for environmental (not to mention cultural) vandalism, but the USA had no problem doing exactly that to Mount Rushmore. Absolutely disgusting. And it didn't happen thousands of years ago, giving it the patina of history. When I was a kid, Mt Rushmore seemed like the Pyramids of Egypt or Stonehenge - then I found out it was carved in the 1930s (!!!!!) when people really should have known better. It's like a gigantic sign that says ''White People own this now!''. If I was a Native American, I'd have dynamited that shit into rubble a long time ago. Absolute disgrace that it was ever allowed to happen.

Lovely. July 4th 2000, I spent the entire day at the monument and got to experience not the only the program (which can bring out the feels) but fireworks over the Presidents’ head. It was one of the last times for the fireworks so I feel fortunate. I do believe every American should go there as the feeling of seeing it is hard to explain. Thanks for sharing. When you get a chance, if you have not seen it, please watch Alfred Hitchcock’s NORTH BY NORTHWEST to see an excellent vintage view of the park. while many scenes of the park are on a movie soundstage - the exterior views of the original visitor center (and vintage cars) in the movie are worth a look. Don’t know if someone already covered this in a comment but entrance to the memorial is free. Parking is $10 and ticket is good for a year. You can go during the day and come back in evening (or another day) without incurring a second parking charge. Look for lower scanner at ticket dispenser when re-entering. You’ll need same ticket when you leave. There is also some limited designated parking on the road around the monument where you could avoid fees altogether. Whole heartedly agree with this being a MUST stop including the evening program.

Every single Thanksgiving the past 3 decades, my cousins remind me of the time we went to Mount Rushmore and I screamed like a girl when I saw a rattlesnake and cried until I got a Frogger ice cream bar. Agh, the wonder years.

i have been looking forward to you getting to the individual clips of the Black Hills. Hoping to go next summer Lord willing. I really need to check off all that the area has to offer. We have only been to Rushmore, not knowing how much more there is to see in the area( at that time in 2013). I remember we really liked Keystone and a very neat restaurant we found there. This is going to be a great series!

Crowds will be much thinner, but the temps will most likely be cold. Mid 40's in the day and below freezing at night.

So pretty! Have you visited Stone Mountain Park in Georgia? Well if you haven't, its a HUGE granite mountain with carvings on the front of Confederate generals, and a place to hike up the mountain, and in the summer time they do light shows at night!

I highly recommend going to the memorial area at sunrise. The orange color of the rock is just beautiful and there is a lot of wildlife at that time of day.

Hi good video... I have a question for you. If I want to do the same itinerary like you (go to the Rushmore Mount in the morning and go back until evening for the nigth show), I have to pay twice the park ticket or it works for the all same day if I want to return later?
@AmericasParks
@AmericasParks 8 ай бұрын
Got me curious on that one... To my surprise, here is what I found: "A parking ticket entitles a non-commercial vehicle unlimited entry to the memorial for one year from the date of purchase." I believe there is no fee to enter the Memorial itself.
