Another suggestion for a mid-day excursion is to visit nearby CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL. It's still a work in progress, but the face and head have been completed. The head of Crazy Horse alone is 27 feet taller than the six story heads of Mount Rushmore.

Don’t know if someone already covered this in a comment but entrance to the memorial is free. Parking is $10 and ticket is good for a year. You can go during the day and come back in evening (or another day) without incurring a second parking charge. Look for lower scanner at ticket dispenser when re-entering. You’ll need same ticket when you leave. There is also some limited designated parking on the road around the monument where you could avoid fees altogether. Whole heartedly agree with this being a MUST stop including the evening program.

We spent 8 days hiking in the Black Hills area August 2021. Mt Rushmore was definitely the most patriotic moment I think I’ve ever experienced up to this point in life. A bucket list activity for sure. What was a surprise for me in the museum is that they have an exhibit about the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). My father served in it during 1935-36 in North Dakota as an 18 year old. Young men put to work during the Great Depression doing a lot of hard manual labor, building public and national parks. Unsung young heroes sending home their paychecks home to for families to survive. If you get more time to hike the area, you can see the back of Mt Rushmore from Black Elk Peak. Met a Lakota on the trail there who was evangelizing for Jesus. Had a wonderful talk with him but I regret not getting a picture. A strikingly noble looking human being. Go see Crazy Horse, great museum. Custer SP is a must also. Take a day to go into Wyoming and see/hike Devils Tower. The whole area was just beautiful…

Patriotic moment? Did you feel proud? If a bunch of foreigners came to Britain, conquered it, and then, to demonstrate their power and dominance, carved faces of their leaders into the White Cliffs of Dover, they would be rightly hunted down by British natives and executed for environmental (not to mention cultural) vandalism, but the USA had no problem doing exactly that to Mount Rushmore. Absolutely disgusting. And it didn't happen thousands of years ago, giving it the patina of history. When I was a kid, Mt Rushmore seemed like the Pyramids of Egypt or Stonehenge - then I found out it was carved in the 1930s (!!!!!) when people really should have known better. It's like a gigantic sign that says ''White People own this now!''. If I was a Native American, I'd have dynamited that shit into rubble a long time ago. Absolute disgrace that it was ever allowed to happen.

Every time I go there I learn something new. I first saw it with my parents and grandparents in 1952. It was far less developed then. The sculptors studio was about all that was there then along with the old observation deck. My 9 year old self was amazed by the men who swung on those trapeze like contraptions and did actual work up there! It’s always amazing to see how few Vets there are in a crowd that big. I'm very proud to be an American but not proud of how WE obtained the country. Accumulating control from violence and breaking treaties has gone on since the beginning of mankind and still occurs. But it's almost a slap in the face to the Native Americans that we stole, by attack, the land of the Lakota tribe. The worst part is we stole there sacred hill that represented their "Six Grandfathers" representing North, East, South, West, above (sky) , and blow "earth" And us Americans took their "monument" and made it OURS. I don't condone or agree with those methods but I am still proud to be an American... Since this was before my time. much love and respect to all peaceful and respectful people.

Lovely. July 4th 2000, I spent the entire day at the monument and got to experience not the only the program (which can bring out the feels) but fireworks over the Presidents’ head. It was one of the last times for the fireworks so I feel fortunate. I do believe every American should go there as the feeling of seeing it is hard to explain. Thanks for sharing. Thank you for your patriotism and your love for Ruben sandwiches! I visited when I was 15 in 1987 and am planning a trip back with my wife soon. I'm 52 now and it's refreshing to see people who are still proud of our great nation❤

Really encouraged by your values and kind words! We're not perfect, but still the best country in the world. One that was build by many genuine and sacrificial patriots that now are often forgotten or despised.

I was there yesterday! The weather was great and nearly empty, maybe 20 people. Such an amazing sight. Just wondering how long before the progress democrats try to tear it down? Pray for America 🙏🇺🇸

Every single Thanksgiving the past 3 decades, my cousins remind me of the time we went to Mount Rushmore and I screamed like a girl when I saw a rattlesnake and cried until I got a Frogger ice cream bar. Agh, the wonder years.

I highly recommend going to the memorial area at sunrise. The orange color of the rock is just beautiful and there is a lot of wildlife at that time of day.

We just received a ranger park and so you want to talk about angry engineering and tear down a dairy queen and cut some trees and alow in noise then I'll say I don't like you always to he was saying the homeless couldn't live at the falls which means that you are saying the American tribes relations still have to get of there tribal land

Was adopted as a baby, not even a year old to America. I’ve loved this country for as long as I can remember and while I’ve visited some of the most amazing parks America has to offer this one has always been the one I’ve looked forward to seeing the most. This video makes me even more excited!

I toured Mt Rushmore in 2016. I started early but it hit 99 degrees by noon. I did the presidential trail but it was quite hot and work to climb back out of the trail. I definitely stopped at the cafe. I did Custer State Park the rest of the day.

You'd probably be fine if you stay on the main observation deck area and then spread out based on your children's tolerance.
