Was this the normal 1uC sized piece of Americium in a standard household smoke detector, or the larger 80uC found in some older industrial units?

Non internally or externally, handling highly radioactive materials always requires safety precautions and knowledge of what the material is, what kind of radiation you are working with, etc. This americium mainly emits alpha particles, which are stopped by just a few centimetres of air even, and a trace of gamma radiation, which is neglectable. This 'sample' came from an old smoke detector and I made sure that BEFORE it was deposed of, the radioactive source was safely separated, as you don't want that to end up in general waste. I made a container for it, not only to contain it but also to make sure everyone could easily see that this was in fact radioactive material.
