"The Soviet Union" is certainly the wrong answer, and maybe Russia as well depending what you mean by "Russia". Whatever you imagine, it has to be consistent with what the character of the musical is expressing in the lyrics. It's a land which was born "long before nations' lines were drawn". And "man's petty nations" "rise to fail" in their attempt to "posses ... my country's heart". Let these nations "tear themselves apart". In my humble opinion, he is neither singing about the USSR or the nation state of Russia.

Around 2013 a neighbour took me along to a small venue in stockholm, no announcements (only the jungle-drum), less than 50 in the audience, small band of base git drums. It was Tommy Körberg singing blues. Yes Blues. It totally blew me away. Never heard anything so powerful, sensitive, masterful in the genre, ever after, or before. Once in a lifetime experience, or perhaps even, only Once...

Both Helena Sjöholm and Tommy Körberg singing songs from musicals made of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson ( The two BB in ABBA). When Abba split those two went on writing musicals, the first one was about Swedish emigrants that went to USA in the beginning of 1900. Helena sang Du måste finnas, in English, with Stockholm’s symfoniorkester. Tommy Körberg sang Anthem from Chess. Björn and Benny were behind Mama Mia the films too. They took Abba songs and put some of them together and made up a storyline from that. Both Helena and Tommy began to sing with Björn and Benny as they were playing more Swedish music, there are a lot of them, but when Helena sang Gabriellas sång I think that it was Björn and Benny who wrote it.

Tommy truly is a national treasure. As is Björn & Benny from ABBA who wrote this musical. They also wrote the Kristina from Duvemåla musical and I hate that P3 ruined Du måste finnas with Helen Sjöholm from that musical for you, I know we are many who would love to see your full reaction to that. One forgotten song from Chess is The Arbiter. It was Björn Skifs who sang it originally. As i remeberit, in the first perfomanece Elaine Paige was so nervous that Karin Glennmark sang it instead. Björn Skifs was on the billboard in the first half of the 70's, with Hooked on a feeling, a classic song here in Sweden.

The people who wrote the music are the two guys from ABBA, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The person who wrote the lyrics was Sir Tim Rice, who also worked on _Jesus Christ Superstar_ and _Evita_ when it comes to musical theater and thus a collaborator of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Sir Tim also worked on _Aladdin_ and _The Lion King_ for Disney. A collaboration between Swedish composers and a native English speaker and lyricist. An A-lister at that.

Okay, you could have chosen an earlier version but the thing is that he's now over 70 and he is still singing. He's one of the world's most talented musical artists. What you forgot to tell is that "Chess" is written by Björn and Benny (they started to write musicals after ABBA). The first nr 1 hit Tommy had was a pop-song named "Judy min vän". I've got that single with an autograph, I waited for 2 hoursvin line, I was 9 years old. This "Judy min vän" was a big hit and Paul McCartney has said he was sorry that he didn't write it!🤣 I love you say you're patriotic, and there're millions of Swedes that are patriotic and 100s of thousands that acknowledge our military titles. Don't get woke on us in Sweden. Nobody is a real racist here. We've got some problems with dark right wing organisations as all countries in the world. Tommy is Also in the Swedish classic movie “Ronja Rövardotter.” It’s from a book written by Astrid Lindgren who wrote Pippi Longstocking, Emil and Mío min Mío (Christian Bales First movie)

@@attesmatte Tycker nog att han är något vek i de inspelningarna faktiskt... Hans röst fick inte den där kraften och fylligheten förrän 87-88 nångång. Sedan kan jag sträcka mig till att han höll i sin prime till -95 ungefär, därefter började det sakta gå utför. Idag är han ju en skugga av den han var i början på 90-talet, men han är ju också 73 år gammal så det är ju inget konstigt.

You should REALLY listen (and watch the video!) to “Lili & Sussie - Oh Mama” (..and also any of their other 80’s songs, but start with this!).
