Amex Trifecta - A Powerful Setup (But Not Worth It?)

The Amex Trifecta might be one of the best credit card setups in terms of value for the right person, but in this video I explain why the 3 American Express credit cards in the Amex Trifecta are not for everyone. Here, I talk about both the good and bad of the American Express Trifecta so that hopefully you can make a decision as to whether you should have all, some, or none of these credit cards in your wallet.
So first of all, the Amex Trifecta is typically made up of the Amex Platinum Card, the Amex Gold Card, and the Amex Blue Business Plus. Each of these credit cards have their own benefits and features, but what I’ve found is that there’s no real advantage to combining these cards together in a setup. Every credit card out of these 3 also earns Membership Rewards Points which can be really valuable, but those credit card points are only worth it if you plan to use them for travel and not cash back.
Hopefully this video will help to explain what exactly the Amex Trifecta offers so that you can make a decision on what cards you should look to get. But as always, what works for you is not going to work for everyone. Make sure you do your own research on these Amex credit cards before you look to get them, but they can be really powerful if they do make sense for your situation!

This setup is definitely NOT for everyone. I have found a ton of value in just having the Amex Gold and BBP alone. At the end of the day, if you won't get positive value from the credits on these cards and don't want to use your points for travel, I would look someplace else. Don't always fall for the hype people!! Great video Daniel. Hopefully this helps people look at this setup in a different way.

Dan, I’ll start by saying that you’re probably the most honest guy in this space so far. I’ve been at this a long time and most vloggers gloss over these cards instead of just being honest. I’ve honestly thought really hard about starting a channel just to tell folks what others won’t. So with that being said, thank you. But I agree…Amex isn’t for some folks. It’s a very complicated program if one doesn’t want to take the time to learn. Using their points for domestic flights is almost a waste. They really only shine for international first and business travel…and even those take a lot of points and usually come with fuel surcharges that most vloggers don’t want to speak about because then they can’t refer to the travel at “free” anymore. Airport lounges can be nice…but most domestic lounges aren’t. You’re never going to get steak and lobster…most of the time it’s like man & cheese, lukewarm soup, hummus and crackers, and light snacks with cheap to mid-shelf liquor. Domestic first class is just a wider seat…shy of Delta, most don’t offer seat back entertainment. Saver space is hard to to fine. Better be prepared to travel on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday to have the best luck. And I’ll end my rant with saying that most could do better with the Citi Premier at $95 AF as it earns 3x on most every day categories (dining, grocery, gas, hotel, airfare). ThankYou points with this card can be cashed out at 1cpp without having to hold another high dollar AF card like the Schwab Platinum. Sure it doesn’t have travel protection but unless you’re traveling a lot you can purchase protection per flight for fairly cheap or just by an annual plan. Amex protection forces you to book round trip anyway which I hate because I may want to depart on American and return on Southwest….I like options. So many other options and this is coming from someone who holds the very cards you mention. But I like for folks to be transparent and honest so folks can make the best decision for themselves rather than telling them that it’s all sunshine and rainbows by having lounge access when in reality the lines are long, the food is okay at best, and the experience isn’t always what you find on Instagram. Anyways, I’ll keep watching and thank you for being some honesty into this space because a lot of folks refuse to. I’ll continue pondering the idea of starting a channel that strictly debunks the myths that other vloggers speak of in this space because someone needs to and I’m glad that you’re on the track of doing so. Til the next one!

5/24 pushed me towards this setup. I'm a big fan. I use most of my platinum coupon book. The combined Uber credits with gold and platinum have been useful in the clutch lately and a 2x catch all no AF in the BBP is a no brainer. I took a trip with my gf in December using FHR and only used a portion of my points and it covered a 4 night stay. I use my Walmart+ pretty often as well. Worth it to me!

Great video! (12:42) I think there actually is a great additional benefit in combining Amex points. When redeeming points though Amex travel you are correct that you don't get a points multiplier like with Chase, but you are still receiving a ton of perks if you redeem with the Platinum card (lounge access, trip delay, baggage insurance, rental car status, hotel status, etc). In this way I would say the Amex trifecta does work well with each other as the points you earned on let's say your blue business (which does not have many travel benefits) are much more valuable when redeemed with the Platinum as you will now receive the afore mentioned perks. I agree the Chase trifecta does work better together if you are cashing out instead of transferring, but if you are transferring out I would say both of these trifectas provide similar benefits! Thanks for reading :)

Gotta say that I totally agree it's not really built for the average person. I think the Chase trifecta has the win in comparison, but like you said each AMEX card could be a good pick depending on your circumstances. But there's a lot of work that goes into learning point redemptions and I don't know why anyone would want AMEX cards if they're not transferring cards haha. Great video Daniel. I completed the trifecta last year and love it. Currently have close to 300K points from the 3 cards and only 200K were from bonuses. I also got other cards last year so if I had only used amex cards, I would probably have another 100K. I have been able to justify all the fees with the credits the gold and plat offer. It works for my life, it won’t work for everyone’s life. You have to weigh the cost and value before you apply.

I also have this trifecta and it works for me. Haven’t had a full year yet so I’ll see how much value the platinum holds in the long run as far as it being worth the high Annual fee. But the credits do offset it. I have Hulu and save $20 per month on that as well as Uber with both the plat and gold I get $25 credit each month which I usually use. Also, the cell phone protection and other benefits like access to lounges, etc. help justify the cost. Also, I spend a lot on food so the gold seems to be the only card that gives you 4x points on restaurants and grocery stores. The Chase only gives you 3x for online grocery shopping. I’m working on the getting the chase trifecta as well so I’ll see which one is best in the long run.

The Amex Trifecta is over sold on YT. In most "regular folks" cases, the Everyday Preferred and Green cards would be a much better duo. $245 af 4.5x on Groceries, 3x on Gas and 1.5x on everything else (with 30 transactions a month and if it's your main card, easy to do) then 3x on travel, transit and restaurants hits nearly every category.

Great content Daniel. I have the Blue Cash Everyday, Gold & Platinum and I tell people Amex will give you some of the best multipliers and great sign on bonuses but the downfalls are expensive AF's, a lot of the credits are useless and a lot of places do not accept Amex due to high service charge fees, hence why they give great multipliers. Chase Trifecta is better for the average consumer but for people like you and I, we gain positive net value per year owning these cards.

Ironically, I get the most value from the platinum due to all the credits. I consider everything else a bonus since I'd be spending more than the $695 for those items normally. The gold is sort of meh for me as it is essentially competing with my SavorOne and the two are pretty similar. The BBP is probably the least appealing card out of the Amex Trifecta for me. I do a lot of purchases overseas so the 2.7% foreign transaction fee really kills it for me. I have debated dropping the gold in favor of using the SavorOne and picking up a Venture or Venture X for miscellaneous spend.

The better solution for most people is going to be just getting the amex gold and blue business plus along with a capone venturex. You have the gold for maximizing your food spend and the blue business plus as a catch all but for your travel categories you have a very simple card like the venture x which gives you 400 bucks worth of travel each year to offset the annual fee($300 travel credit+10k anniversary miles) than you also have a good catch all card if amex isn't accepted. This is the set up I have rn and the reason I won't be bothering with the Plat for a while. Not to mention the venture x gets 10x back on hotels and rental cars booked through the travel portal and 5x back on flights along with your global entry credit and lounge access.
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the Venture X is a great alternative to have instead of the Amex Platinum! More affordable and easier to justify the annual fee. No silly rules to worry about, a much easier travel credit redemption, & significantly better consistent multipliers from the Venture X + Savor duo that can net you +$5 if you only travel *once* a year. The domestic flight partners aren't as good as Chase, but the flip side is domestic flight transfers are some of the worst anyway redemptions, so it's a wash in that regard.

Yeah in my journey I see no point in having it right now. I’ve had Freedom Unlimited for years, so combining it with the CSR to get my points popped together was a no brainer. I prefer the Chase Prifecta. But I love the Amex gold card I have. We’ll see maybe if the platinum offered more multipliers it would be a no brained
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yeah there's no need for you to get the other cards from the Amex Trifecta if you're getting good value from Chase too. The Platinum is great for the benefits outside of the credits and points like airport lounges as well, but not always worth the high annual fee

This is the exact trifecta Im considering as the annual fee is cheaper than the plat and you get sort of the same point earning. Besides BBP you could get the everyday preferred but that card is ugly af lol

I currently have the Amex Blue Cash Preferred but will most likely cancel it and opt for the Amex Gold instead, waiting a couple years to improve my credit score. It's a great card, but I just don't use it enough to justify the annual fee. To top it all off, the 28.24% interest rate and $95 Annual Fee is just really bad.

Even if you travel it may be difficult to justify the Platinum if you don't use the Uber credit and the Equinox. Redeeming points like the channels here show to get 3-7 cent/point has been incredibly frustrating and time consuming for me making it not worth it. However, you can get the Schwab platinum instead and turn all the points into cash at 1.1 cent/point and combine that with the Blue Cash Preferred and the Blue Business Plus to get the most of the multipliers. I don't eat out often and don't use Uber or other food delivery services, so the Gold is not worth the cost. You get the best of the 3 cards above and with the cash redemption lone it pays for itself more than once for me.
@dgasmd1
@dgasmd1 Жыл бұрын
BTW, while the Gold does have the multipliers like restaurants outside the US, it is accepted at so few places outside the US that it hardly get used by me. So another reason not to have it. For that, I use other cards, but still use the Platinum for the hotel and airline purchases.

For someone who doesn't own a business they could switch out the bbp for the green card, but then you'd have to shell out another $150. And for a card company that's really only good for purchases and travel within the US none of their cards are really worth it unless you do own a business and have to travel a lot for it
@Daniel_Braun

Yeah the green card is always another option, but I think that card is a lot harder to justify the annual fee given that there's other cards out there that earn similarly for much less or no annual fee

I love it, but my preferred situation and airlines may not work for everyone. I'm investing with Charles Schwab, I have a family that likes to cook during the week, and we like to fly Delta airlines. For single people, who don't care to invest with Schwab, and who have Southwest or United Airline preferences don't get it. Chase CSP/CFU combo works better.
