The most fascinating sports betting story I have ever heard was the time Barney Curley managed to fool the Irish bookies by getting long odds on one of his own racehorses that he knew was suited to this type of race and conditions, although what he did was not technically illegal the way he did it was similar to a heist involving months of planning and hundreds of accomplices across the country and at the track that scooped him the equivalent of about 2 million pounds today. There is a lot more to the story but when I heard the story on an old RTE documentary I thought it might be something that could interest you as Barney led a very interesting life before and after this incident and I dont think any uploaders have covered it

I understand that you have to ban all betting because if you didn't you'd just be inviting people to try grey areas... But betting on your own team to win and nothing else seems like it shouldn't be dealt with as harshly, I mean it's a bet instead of being obviously able to manipulate statistics like, benching yourself or constantly fucking up, etc.

I don't buy the whole Ohtani story. Even an average Japanese person with little to no English could set up a bank account with any multinational bank, let alone a star athlete. Japanese is certainly a langauge their website would translate into. And pretty sure BoA could find a japanese speaker, in LA of all places, for a high profile customer who was going to be depositing such large amounts. There's no good reason this dude needed to know all of his bank details etc, so there's plenty of doubt those transfers were all done unknowingly.

I definitely agree language isn’t enough of a reason on its own (and it appears Ohtani does actually speak some English, just not super well), but I do think there’s other factors at play. At 23 Ohtani is signed to the major league in a foreign country and launched into the big time there. That’s a lot to navigate and Mizuhara, who he’d known for years, was older and seemed to also be a personal assistant and confidant. I could see a young inexperienced person naively thinking he could let this trusted assistant handle things while focusing on his craft. We’ve seen cases on this channel and others with people putting way too much trust in others and giving them free access to their money instead of handling things themselves. I know nothing about Ohtani’s personality and have no idea if that’s what happened, but it sounds possible/plausible. 🤷🏼‍♀️
