Jay is Korean-American. Born in Washington. But he was part of a kpop group called 2pm. You can tell he's American. He got that dirty, gritty kinda vibe. lol
@rhondathornton37692 жыл бұрын
You mean he was in the grp 2pm...wow? I was browsing y2 last year and came across this young asian singer/rapper and listen to him i immediately like him and his vibe. He has that american style in this videos. If you are not into the lyrics you damn well love his melody and beat to this song. As for 2pm grp im for sure he was the one doing the rapping in some of their songs, as to Ok Taceyeon the young man played in the asian show called "Vincenzo" did the rapping when he left the grp.

Jay Park is a beast, raps, sings, dances, founder & CEO of 2 of the biggest independent hip-hop/R&B labels in Korea AOMG & H1ghr Music and signed to Roc Nation, although I think his contract may have recently ended with Roc Nation and he is not sure if he is going to re-sign, his music catalog is large and diverse, super talented, respected and admired artist and entrepreneur in Korea, often times referred to as a legend in Korea

WARNING! WALL OF TEXT INCOMING! So back in Seattle which is where he grew up he joined a bboy crew called AOM (Art of Movement) in high school. He started dancing and rapping for fun and didn‘t know what to do with his life cuz his grades where pretty bad and he had no interest in doing college or anything like that. After receiving a smack from his mother for saying that she insisted that he auditions for a korean company that was looking for new artist to sign under their label. So called trainees that would be taken over to Korea and put under so called „artist development“ which is basically a boot camp to become the next big superstar in the korean entertainment industry. They have lessons in dancing,singing,rapping languages, media training etc for anything between 1 to 7 years even. So Jay went there and auditioned thinking it was more like a talent show in which the winner gets some sort of award or prize money or something. He got casted and decided to move to Korea at the age of 17 with barely any knowledge about the culture or music scene over there. He barely spoke korean (15-20% maybe) and was definetly more american than korean at that time. He wasn‘t used to the food over there, got made fun of because of well basically anything because he stood out that much and got scolded a lot by the teachers for not following the rules that much because he didn‘t understand their social structure and the system behind everything. In the states it‘s all about the individual and Free speech etc but in Korea there is this so called „save face culture“ where it‘s better to put on a socially accepted public persona and caring about the group instead of being an individual. Moving on, he did that for 4 years and eventually debuted as a member of a boyband called 2PM back in 2009. 2PM was the biggest boyband in the country at that time and the K-Pop scene was much much smaller than compared to today where you have hundreds of boy and girlgroups to listen to. So 2PM was THE BIGGEST DEAL back then and he was the leader of the group so one of the most important members. He left that group/got kicked out (no one knows REALLY what happened but I guess both??) after only one year because of a scandal that happened. While being a trainee under that company (JYP Entertainment) he wrote some messages to a friend via MySpace about how he didn‘t like it in Korea and wanted to go back to the states. He literally wrote „Korea is gay“ which got taken out of context and blown up to become an issue over him actually believing that Koreans where gay etc (keep in mind that „...is gay“ was/is a popular slang to express how one doesn‘t like something in English but the people over in Korea didn’t know about that and thought he meant it literally) So all that happened and he left (there is a video of him at the airport going back to Seattle with THOUSANDS of Fans there loosing their mind over him it‘s really crazy you can look it up) There were even local News in US TV talking about him once he was back in Seattle. So after that he worked at a tire shop of one of his friends and uploaded a cover of BoB‘s Nothing on You on KZbin. That video got over 2million views within the first 24 hours and contributed to over 5k or even 50k sales (not sure) of that single in Korea alone and put it back on the Charts. BoB then released a new version with Jay‘s verse replacing Bruno Mars‘ verse on the song that was Korea exclusive. So remember that bboy crew I mentioned at the beginning? AOM. One member of AOM was a guy named Cha Cha. He is half Filipino half Afro American and was also making music back then. He was a producer and saw that Jay was also starting to make his own music. So he played him some of his beats, Jay liked them and they‘ve been working together very closely since then. Jay got calls from a lot of companies and talent agencies both from Korea and the states and ultimately decided to join SidusHQ. He released his first Album under that label and started gaining more recognition as a solo artist over in Korea. He also moved back to Seoul and concentrated on rebranding himself from a former K-Pop Idol to an independent artist that does RnB, Rap, Hip Hop and Pop. After a few years he decided to create his own label which he named AOMG (Above Ordinary Music Group) in honor to his bboy crew which him and Cha Cha are STILL part of to this day. They have bboy battles ever now and then for fun. So after founding AOMG which was more out of convenience rather than money because he connected with a lot of people that he wanted to work with and collaborate, he managed to establish himself as one of the biggest, of not even the most influential person in the korean Hip Hop and RnB scene, which only started to REALLY pop off after the airing of the first season of a show called Show me The Money which is a hip hop based survival type of show kinda like the voice or American idol but only focused on rapping. So with that scene popping off and him being at the very front of the scene for a while even before, he only became even bigger and established himself over in Korea as a household name and even in the asian hip hop scene in general. That’s also why he became a judge on Asia‘s Got Talent btw He was then thinking about what he wanted to do after achieving pretty much everything he wanted over in Korea. He decided to go back to the roots and look into the Seattle based Hip Hop scene. He met lots of dope artists and signed them under his newly found label H1GHR Music. Which is more focused on the international market while still having korean artists promoting in Korea and American artists promoting in the states underneath. Also important to notice is that during a US Tour of AOMG in New York he got noticed by someone working for Tidal (the music streaming platform that Jay Z owns). He noticed that the majority of people in the crowd were non asian and singing and rapping along those korean artists. He was very impressed by Jay and the show and contacted him afterwards. Things happened and Jay got signed under Roc Nation which is Jay-Z‘s own record label. He is the first asian man under that label alongside names like Alicia Keys, Rihanna, J.Cole, Rita Ora, Calvin Harris etc Roc Nation promotes Jay in the US and helps him with the distribution of his albums and stuff in the states while the music itself is still entirely made by artists under H1GHR and AOMG. He went to a lot of radio stations and had lots of interviews for his first EP out of Roc Nation called „Ask Bout Me“. I recommend watching the whole 40min interviews he did on SWAY in the morning (with his very impressive and politically charged Freestyle Rap at the end) and on No Jumper. He also has released a full length rap album called The Road Less Traveled in 2019 featuring Seattle based artists alongside some other projects. This man is never sleeping and making collabs left and Right no matter how famous or infamous one might be. I consider myself a fan and even I haven’t listened to ALL of his songs yet cuz there‘s just too much out there. You should really listen to his WORLDWIDE album which helped him earn respect and a name in the korean hip hop scene as a rapper. Specially because people that have been in the K-Pop Industry before (so called Idols) are usually frowned upon in the hip hop/underground community for being a sell out and not a true artists. He managed to make the jump and get recognized. My favorite Album of his is definetly his RnB Album „Everything you Wanted“ tho. Just listen to it as well so you can get both sides from him covered. Sorry for this wall of text but if anyone deserves to be talked about then it is Jay Park. I haven‘t even started talking about his political engagement throughout the years and how he helps establishing new artists in the scene and changing lifes etc this man is such an inspiration he really is something else. Song recommendations: For more Pop/Mainstream stuff: All I wanna do (one korean and one English version) Solo (korean) Know Your Name (korean) Metronome (korean) Me Like Yuh (one korean and one English version) Joah (korean) V (korean) All the Way Up (newest release one korean and one English version) My Last (korean) Sexy4Eva (more hip Hop/Pop) All Day (Flex) (more happy pop/rap in korean) RnB: Aquaman (entirely English) I don’t dissapoint (entirely English) 2nd Thots (entirely English) Turn Off your Phone REMIX ft ELO (korean) Million (English) Ride me (korean I believe) Only One (English tbh idk if it fits this category) Alone tonight (English also dunno if it fits here) Nothing Matters (pop/rnb korean but the whole EP is very personal which is not something he usually does) Encore (korean him talking about retiring soon) By myself (korean and god this song is heart breaking to me) Ballads/soft shit/RnB: Stay with me (korean) The truth is (korean but OMG those lyrics) The promise (korean) Rap/Hip Hop/Trap/Oldschool: Worldwide (korean) Want it (korean) On It (English) FSU (but the LIVE version cuz the original has Rich the Kid and GASHI as Features but the live one has only Jay spittin 3 verses) Soju (original ft 2Chainz and the Remix featuring korean artists with a different verse from Jay) Get it all (English) Monster (English) Twisted Dreams (English ft Jay Electronica amongst others) K-Town (English) Run It (commercial for Nike ft Jessi and Woo Won Jae) Turn up/club/EDM: Mommae (Most known song more Hip Hop/Club vibes) Forget about tomorrow (English) I like 2 Party Ain‘t no party like an AOMG Party Forever (more chill but EDM) AND COUNTLESS FEATURES OMG IDK WHERE TO START

Just a tip for you guys, when it comes to lyric videos in kpop (or related) I find it easier to look up for “(song name) color coded”. Color coded is the type of video you’ve been watching for BTS’s lyrics where you have the lyrics in korean at the top, the romanization in the middle and translation in english at the bottom and the pictures that highlight who’s singing. You just have to check if it says “Han/Rom/ENG” because there are color coded videos in other languages like the second one you clicked on and “eng” shows the video is in english.
