Hello Jan! You can't boot 3.1 with a 3.1.4 ROM because the workbench.library and icon.library are missing in the 3.1.4 ROM. Version 3.1 expects this libraries to be in the boot ROM. Regards, Thomas

Wasn't aware of that when I got the 3.1.4 ROM. There's a workaround for it (making a 1MB KickROM) that I'm going to look into. Otherwise it's going to be incompatible with many older disks.

@@JanBeta But it should be possible to extract the libraries from the 3.1 ROM and put them on the 3.1 Workbench drive. Or maybe try to copy the two libraries from 3.1.4. For me I have decided to stick with 3.1.4 and not use any software that does not work with that rom version. The old 3.1 makes problems in so many cases, like cf-card compatibility, big disks, IDE to Sata adapters do not work correctly and many more. All that is fixed with 3.1.4.

The Workbench library and the icon library no longer reside on the Kickstart ROMs, that's why it didn't work. In fact Workbench 3.1.4 copies them on the HDD/Flash during the installation process. That doesn't happen with 3.1, which takes for granted those libraries are in ROM. A quick solution would be copying your 3.1.4 installation from the HDD to the Compact Flash, and there you have it! ;-)
@JanBeta5 жыл бұрын

@@JanBeta I have got through any incompatibility so far. Also 3.1.4 can handle everything from the older to the newest stuff. If you really want to stick to older Amiga OSs, then just copy those two libraries (from aminet) over to the Hard Drive and add a couple of assign to the startup-sequence.

Some commenters pointed out that Hyperion left out icon.library and workbench.library from the new Kickstart ROM (to have more room for other fixes) so it needs them on disk to boot the GUI. Another solution: just set the disk up with OS 1.3. In 512 bytes per block. Calculate with the help of all your software how great every partition must be. Under OS 1.3 you must set all the data into a mountlist. But watch out. For the Workbench the kickstart ROM reserve for every 500 MB 75 kilobyte of ChipRam. The other partitions as Work or extern diskdrives going into fastram. In the mountlist you can set also the wanted buffers. Every buffer on the Amiga has 512 bytes standard. Working with SSD or CF is also possible under OS 1.3 but then must all the data under 488 bytes per block. OFS format. ( Is equal to ISO format. ) Then update OS 1.3 to your most wanted OS. ( I'am sorry for my bad English )
@teslajack4 жыл бұрын
It is not easy, but in my situation i use a very old setuptool for to build up massive partitions. It is the HDToolbox of the A590 HD (1989) setup. And the 1.3 Format command is much much better then the one from kick and OS 2 and 3 and up. With the format from 1.3 even big partitions on memorycards and SSD's can be formatted in lowlevel format, if there's enough ChipRAM is available. So on the Amiga 2000 you need at least 1 MB of ChipRAM for to do this.

A bit better way to do it would be to make smaller partitions, maybe three 35 Gig partitions, and use a better cluster size of 4096 or maybe 8192. The 32k clusters mean every tiny file takes 32k on the drive, which will make a huge difference if you put things like WHDLOAD files on this drive, which has a lot of small files. It will end up wasting a lot of space.

You shouldn't stop just because it worked. You should use the smallest sector size that works. Because it means each file, no matter how small is going to take up that many bytes on the disk. You basically set it up so that 32k is the smallest amount it can access. If you have a 33k file? Guess what, it's using 64k of the disk. It's not just about wasting space either, it means it has to spend time loading those chunks 512 bytes at a time into memory.
