The Amiga/Commodore story is a sad story. But as well the SGI story is. The once great company faded. I have 2 SGI machines, an Indy and an Indigo2. The Amiga was the SGI for the poor people. But nowadays an Amiga is more expensive than a SGI.

Small fact about the A3000T: my brother worked at Sales Curve Interactive (SCi) on the abomination that was the game based on the Lawnmower Man film. That game, of the CDROM FMV genre that was popular for a couple of years, was mastered on an A3000T equipped with a single speed SCSI CD burner. I dread to think how much that setup cost back in 1992.
@ForgottenComputer
@ForgottenComputer Жыл бұрын
Very interesting! I had to look that game up.... oh wow. But it looks like it is a PC game, so pretty cool is even the fact that they made a PC game on an Amiga. And yes, a CD burner back then must have cost astronomical money.
@lawrencemanning
@lawrencemanning Жыл бұрын
@@ForgottenComputer it was used for running off CD-ROMs for testing I think, and the final master. I dread to think how much the blanks cost then. My brother did some of the 3D stuff, all on PCs unfortunately.

I'm pretty much a wedge computer 4 life kind of guy. :) But I think it's nice that they made official tower versions of A3/4000. Some towerized their A1200s, but it wasn't quite the same, and always a bit awkward.
@ForgottenComputer
@ForgottenComputer 8 ай бұрын
I love the wedges too, and agree that towerized 1200 don't have the appeal. I am, however, working on a beefed up 1200 setup with no case and all kinds of extensions which I called the "Amiga Sandwich". I'm not planning to towarize it though, keeping it horizontal :D Thanks for visiting and commenting!
@kyle8952
@kyle8952 7 ай бұрын
@@ForgottenComputer Keeping it horizontal is a good idea. I had a 1200 tower and often I had to push all the boards together to make it boot. It was so often that I left the case open all the time. I think these days it'd be possible to build a reliable tower because everything can just be in the one card like Vampire or that Pi accelerator (don't remember name). But with BPPC and FastATA and everything it was a nightmare.

I bought an Amiga 3000T in 1991 and ran my BBS on it. It was FidoNet node 1:255/42 and called The Heart of Gold. Around 1996 I sold it to someone in Quebec via USENET. Not only did it give more expansion slots as the video says, but also more hard drive bays. I had most of the slots and bays filled as I had an A2386, some ISA cards, A Zorro 56K serial card, and many drives in it. An A2000 or A3000 wouldn't have been sufficient.

High end Amigas are fascinating, I never saw one in the wild when they were contemporary... they were just things that magazines sometimes mentioned, insanely out of reach mystery machines. Just look at it! in those days they had the decency to make expensive computers look expensive, you got a whole lot of steel for your money too!

Yeah, for me even the small all-in-one amigas were out of reach back in their time... :D But yes, I agree the build was very solid. I forgot to mention the weight in the video, but let me tell you: after assembling and with just 2 expansion boards it is VERY difficult to lift.

"Best" part is the placement of the battery. My friend had an A3000T with extensive damage from a leaking battery since the acid would run down the board due to gravity ending up as far down as the chip RAM sockets.

It would be nice for someone to bring the Amiga back using more modern board layouts with maybe a slightly higher level of integration regarding the specialized chips. It would still run the old software but could also run new stuff as well. So not an emulated machine but the real deal. I doubt that will ever happen though.

I love my A3000T. She's had some restoration work over the years and is still going strong. I might argue that while the A3000T might be the most expensive Commodore Amiga in history, the MacroSystem DraCo (Amiga clone) wins the "most expensive" non-Commodore vintage Amiga title. DraCo uses a licensed and modified A3000 ROM, it will run AmigaOS3/RTG friendly applications. There's no Amiga custom chipset clone or emulation, but RTG works well. You can even use many ZORRO-II cards. It shipped in Tower and Cube models, I have one of each. DraCo would set you back $15K USD. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp-vknh5Zcmjp7c

Related webside about A3000T: A3000T for sure is a 4-layer design (minimum), 8520s are specific designs for Amiga and got used in 1571/81, too and Paula could be called OCS while you call the board chips non-ECS but they are not related to OCS/ECS at all. ECS version of the chips are Agnus (2MB) and Denise (and Paula never changed).

Actually the X5000 motherboard is the most expensive Amiga in history. A case, power supply, disk storage, keyboard, monitor and mouse have to be added separately so you'll be set back by around $5K USD in the end. That is of course if you can even consider the X5000 an Amiga at all since it wasn't produced by Commodore.

The Stone Age looks of the Operating System's GUI (in comparison to Windows 3.0) must also have been a big no no back in the days. 🙂. Maple V Rel 3 is the best Computer Algebra System for Amiga which you can find on repository sites as ADF files. Installing and old Linux/m68k + X-Window-System +fvwm Manager from the 90s on one of the partitions and running GNUplot or StarOffice would be fun too. Cheerio .

Aesthetics are relative mind you, but I find Workbench 2.0 much more cohesive and pleasant than Windows 3.0. The latter always reminded me of those interfaces children's toy computers used, while the Amiga had style and class. It also was still better at multitasking. Now if you're referring to 1.3 and below, yes, those were ugly, but the 3000 never released with those
