Amiga 4000D Rebuild Episode 7: Upgrades: Indivision AGA MK3 + Mediator

Pretty cool. Yeah airflow on big box Amiga desktops was not good. I just received an IComp package with AGA MK-III, but also have a ZZ9000 so might not use the Indivision for my ACILL 4000 board. Your motherboard looks super clean and like it just came off the Commodore factory assembly line. The Zorro PCI translation seems a real choke point on the Mediator, but still cool.

After the last repair, I had the motherboard ultrasonically cleaned. Really does make a huge difference, but the process can damage any stickers that are on the board. I agree on the Mediator....it's kind of silly. I still shocked Elbox still makes them! It made more sense when the mediator was first released...PCI cards were easy find and the market for native Amiga hardware had collapsed. Now the old PCI cards are becoming expensive and harder to find, and people are making new Amiga hardware again.

Glad I found this! I am tidying up a scabby 4000 and have a Mediator sitting ready to go in. I have a sb128 soundcard, spider usb and an ethernet card, Finding my parts all scattered every (we moved house a few years ago) is the hard part as this job has been put on hold for far too long. Is there any preference for the kickstart? I have the kit to sort out some 3.2 roms?

I'd really recommend 3.2 roms. Native support for >4gb disks is the biggest for me. I remember having to do crazy things for that even back in 3.5/3.9. Support for Double Screen Modes (i.e. VGA-compatible) in early boot up menu is also really nice, if you don't have a scandoubler...it's really a feature commodore should have had in 3.0 ROMs. The only downside is, some libraries got moved from Kickstart to disk....so once you upgrade the ROMs older Workbench disks won't boot anymore, unless you copy those libraries to them. This isn't something I care about, so it doesn't bother me.

8:50 does the PCI bridge have to be in the very bottom slot of the riser?

It does. PCI cards are backwards (or upside-down) from Zorro/ISA cards. From the A4000 perspective, PCI cards are mounted at the top of the bracket, whereas Zorro and ISA cards are mounted at the bottom of the bracket. So the bottom PCI slot is directly aligned with the Zorro slot, where as the other PCI slots are offset a bit.

Still watching and making comments, with the Radeon in, isnt the flicker fixer kind of pointless?

It's definitely a bit redundant. However, it make screen capturing nice and it's useful for Kickstart ROM screens and maybe some games or old programs that don't support mode promotion. Plus, newer versions of P96 supposedly have some multimonitor support where I could have screens on the native Amiga output _and_ Radeon.
