Please keep making these videos alongside your main channel ones. I really love seeing a historian's insights on all things video games, vintage or modern. Especially when video games are also that historian's favorite past time.

Now this came out of nowhere 😂. Xcopy, a complete classic! You dont actually need to use format considering you're copying the whole disk I've. Still have a few Amiga systems handy. A500+ as a kid, but now an army including the new A500 mini

My first PC was an Amiga computer. I don't think it was 500, but very similar.

I have never been an Amiga guy (except checking one out for a day, cluelessly), but seeing this X-Copy reminded me of using VGA-Copy on PC back then. I also got pondering how we commonly draw strength from nostalgia, from reconnecting to older times, implying that the past is so very often more liked than the present. A worrying realization. This doesn't have to be a norm! But it is easy when being immersed in a norm to consider it to be without alternative.

I had an Amiga 500 with extra RAM and a an extra drive. The extra RAM was needed to play "Wings". Oh man! So many great games. One question... why didn't you just put the source disk in drive 0 and the target disk in drive 1?
@TheProtectorate-yq7vi11 ай бұрын
I personally don't trust my D0 with that. It works but it occasionally acts up. So when it comes to copying and in general, reading disks after booting I tend to use Drive 1 mostly.

When Amiga was popular during my childhood I was PC guy (386). Pros: Hard disk for all those large adventure games, 256 VGA colors. Cons: Poor sound quality (PC speaker), smaller game library (compared to Amiga, or even older 8-bit computers, like Commodore 64)

I had an Atari Mega STe in the early 90s, but a friend of mine had an A500. When I first saw X-Copy, my comment was, "Ah, the Amiga, where even the copying software is pretty."
@lordcucumber77725 ай бұрын
I had an Amiga 500 as a kid and man it was a step up from my dads MSX! Also we had PCs in our home, but for a while the Amiga reigned supreme in my life. Later, the 386 my dad used for work became my go-to gaming rig and the Amiga was sadly sold by my parents to fund my 'take over' of dads PC. I still regret the day I got rid of my 500, it was such a good machine for its day. Demo's, Deluxe Paint, and a plethora of games. Favorite still is Lemmings. That game still bugs me for never having completed it hahaha

I'd love to see more retro PC videos. Whether they're more tutorials, recommendations or reviews of hardware or software, etc. I'd love suggestions on how to pick or build an old PC based off of the OS. Amiga is cool, DOS too, ZX Spectrum, various older Apple systems from the II to Macintosh, or even various Japanese retro PCs like the MSX, PC-88, or PC-98 Good videos as always, Metatron :)

I'm afraid not. Those Amigas and ZXs and whatnots were already on the way out when I was a young child. My elder brother had a PC with MS-DOS and eventually at some point my father installed Windows 3.11 on it. So if anything to me the coolness factor of this stems from the fact that it actually feels kind of exotic.

This is great to see. So many games like this have been lost to degradation and such over the years. We need more backup and archivals of older software.

Don’t know if xcopy worked with copy protection or not, but maybe Amiga users didn’t have to bypass that often. I ran into that frequently with the Atari 800 I had. At least the Amiga had a 3.5” floppy. I had 2 5.25” drives. Nothing like having 180k of storage.
@Stevieboy7415 күн бұрын
It didn’t. It only worked on the example game he used here because it contained no disk based copy protection. Instead it probably used a codewheel that came with the game or used the game manual for protection checks (type the word at page 6, line 3, word 5 etc, that sort of thing). The majority of amiga original games, like the ST, used structure based copy protections like long tracks which could not be copied using x-copy. This is one of the reasons why so many games were cracked by pirates and circulated.

@Stevieboy7415 күн бұрын
The method you have shown would only work on a handful of original amiga games, namely ones that didn’t have disk based structure copy protections, but rather used codewheel or game manual protections. The majority of amiga original disks at the time had structure based protections, using long tracks and such, and these could not be copied using x-copy with the method you showed. For this reason a lot of games were cracked and written back to floppies using a standard disk format for easy duplication and spreading.

I just stumbled across this channel while searching for Amiga stuff (I was in love with our Amigas back in the 90s) and couldn't think where I remembered you from, Metatron. At first I assumed that you must be an Amiga KZbinr who I hadn't watched for a long time, but now I remember I first saw you doing medieval stuff :) I enjoy your videos, you have a good voice and presenting style.

Man... Youre lucky to have actual Amiga... I had A1200 back in a day, sold it to buy PC.. Now I am just using WinUAE emulator to play all the games I either didnt finished when I was kid (didnt knew English enough to finish all the RPGs) or even play games that are completely new to me, just 30 years later :D Same with C64. Great video! Keep them coming!

There seem to have been several revision steps for DMF, and I played it recently and found it quite alright. Often felt quite like Half-Life inspired. What detracted from the experience was the lack of omnipresent soundtrack. Too much musical silence.

With reliable blank discs getting harder to come by, I think imaging the floppies to an SD card to use with a floppy emulator might be a better option.

Guys who sold copied games probably used X-copy or similar app.
@Stevieboy7415 күн бұрын
Guy’s who sold copied games were selling cracked games where the copy protection had been removed, making them easy to copy and circulate. X-copy was used for this purpose, but it couldn’t copy original game disks that contained copy protections within the disk structure.

We didn't have an Amiga. They didn't exist until I was older. We did get a Sperry at discount since my dad was doing tech translation for them in the late 80's. As a kid, all the schools got Apple II and the upgrade to the IIe was a major change in like 3rd grade. Graphics were very minimal, so most games were text adventures, unless you had an Atari or Vectrex.

Hey Metatron, I know it is a bit low to discuss unrelated issues here, but if you want to know what the Ancient Egyptians looked like, they were basically similar to Modern Egyptians (in particular the Sa'idis of Luxor, and the Fellah of the Nile River Delta). I'm a Black African who has recently taken great interest in this discussion and back and forth you have been having with certain Afrocentrists. I've got knowledge in population genetics, archeology, history, archaeogenetics, human cultural groups, and can explain the genomic history of various African ethnicities...etc. I'm also sorry for the hateful things some of our own have said against you, I wish you the best good Sir! I just ask that you please study this issue with rigor and address all points they have, peace out!
