Goal! is my favorite by far because it simulates inertia (acceleration), it takes a long time to master and you definitely need a real joystick to play it (won't work well with a dpad or a keyboard).

I never got to play Goal! I liked World Cup Italia 90 with the cute 3d Sprites, but the best footie games on the Amiga were Kick Off 2 and Sensible World Of Soccer. For me anyway.

If you like acceleration and inertia try the excellent Emlyn Hughes International Soccer. It also takes a while to master but the 5 direction option is great. C64 might even be more fun then the amiga version.

Do you have a ranking from best to not so good?

European Champions was good, although the gameplay was slower than Kick Off. I appreciated to play many european teams in competition.

European Chamopions is a "sequel" to Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, and I always find curious how no one ever mentions that. It's from the same programmer and it's obviously built from the same base. While it defaults from the birdeye view, you can press C (IIRC) and it changes to the sideview camera.

You missed out Fifa Int Soccer. Or was that one too high profile for this type of video?

If I recall, I think I had problems running it through the emulator.

The two Gazza games were probably the worst football-games ever been written. Considering the first one, the developers had the absolutely ridiculous idea of changing the perspective in the middle of the game - when the player approaches one of the goals. It plays crappy, but in my opinion it's still slightly better than its atrocious follower. In Gazza 2, nothings works at all. It's impossible to seperate the ball from an opponent without playing foul. A foul is a bit risky, though - since there's a high chance the screen freezes and you can restart your Amiga. There are no more than three different ways to score a goal, there are no goalie-mistakes as well. Also, the ball should never, ever cross the sideline - since after a throw-in, the gameplay changes completely. It's no longer possible to make long balls or hard, powerful shots then. To restore the old status, another kick-off is necessary (after a goal/second half/new game). Moreover, the impact of the wind is completely exaggarated, as well as the type of the pitch. If you play a league, you should be aware that the game naturally ends after ten or so seasons. AI-generated results never include scores higher than four goals for one team. Without a doubt, my favourite football game on the Amiga is Goal. I also think that Emlyn Hughes International Soccer was a pretty good game for its time and far better than it looked.

Empire Soccer is probably the worst Graftgold game ever. Graftgold did many excellent games, but that one is a huge stinker and it's completely out of the curve for Graftgold games.

Yeah, sorry about that. I didn't manage to run it properly in the emulator. That goes for a few other games too.
