Amiga Keyboard - Part 1- Sum USB Keyboard Adapter

Desperate times! My Amiga 1200 Keyboard has gone funny and now will not work, so I come across the Sum USB Keyboard interface / Adapter while in my search for a new A1200 Keyboard or membrane. failing to find that at not a ridiculous price, I end up ordering the SUM usb keyboard Adapter and try it out and show my first impressions and review of it.

if you really want to go the external keyboard route, this thing is fine. BUT, you don't necessarily need a new (professionally made) membrane cable, you could either make one with narrow solder braid and kapton, make one from a floppy or hard drive ribbon cable, or make a round sleeved cable. the trick is just going to be the connector end, which at worst, replace the connector with something else.

I am working on the first ever amiga 600 laptop built from original amiga 600. it is the first to use an original pc laptop case, it uses a pc case and its matching pc lcd monitor. it has working laptop buttons for sound and monitor functions attached to the lcd controller, sounds: uses the pc speakers and a headphone socket. i have also managed to build in a keyboard that fits in the hole for the pc one, it also has a vga out for a monitor and it supports the vampire 2 and the aca620ec and the indivision ecs. its supports df0: as an external device. it has 2 fans for cooling, one under, one on the back. this was a 2 year project, i will make only 5 additional to sell! watch out for me on youtube!

Oh are you gonna have some fun unscrewing that A1200 keyboard, I still remember the last time 22+ years ago, a thousand and one billion tiny teeny little itty bitty screws, take care where they come from and for the love of God careful how you put them back too, mine if I recall on some either pulled the thread out on the screw or deleted the thread putting them in. 😀

I saw all those screws at the back of the keyboard and instantly thought "hmmm I expect that to be freakin fun" ...Needless to say there will be no goofing around with peacock feathers with all those screws out :o))

Some people use a piece of paper to add extra pressure against the contacts in the socket

You considered silver conductive paint to re-coat the exposed parts of the ribbon? There's a video on youtube of a guy who's done that to revive the ribbon. Or maybe if pushing the cable forwards helps, put some sticky tape on the back to help push the front forwards onto the pins maybe?

I thoguht about it (the tape, not the conductive paint) and maybe if it was back in the days when Amigas werent so expensive. But my fear is goofing up the chip by constantly trying these things. Hence why I stopped while I was ahead.

Glad to hear you got the keyboard issue sorted. Did you order the replacement membrane from RWAP/SellMyRetro? I have bought his A600 membrane before and it works quite well.

Yes thats where i ordered it from, I couldnt find it anywhere else. Hopefully that will be in part 2 of this.

so on a PC keyboard, the ALT key is the Amiga key? You pressed CTRL-ALT-ALT and it did the reset. What about the other keys? Do they work as expected?

DO NOT let the sunshine on your Amiga it will go yellow cos of the ABS plastic and the fire retardant in it reacts with the plastic and the sun.

I have same adapter on my tower A1200. Apple kb with usb hub didnt work with with it. Its really good adapter and nice that use used SuperFrog Circus music.

You're brave to try the USB hubs, i'm not even daring in case it overloads something. In my tower back then I used PC Key 1200 Keyboard adapter which was just for old DIN/PS2 Keyboards. Yes this one is a great adapter! Circus music was perfect for the situation ;o)

It would be interesting to see if your mini keyboard works properly with the Sum. Or does the integrated numerical keys functionality overlap the rightmost keys like with other types of kb adapters.

Remove the Amiga Keyboard and put the Apple Keyboard in side the case and cut,I have one of those apple keyboard,I cleaned that keyboard and it stopped working so be carefull,not a great keyboard.it don't like being cleaned..;) I getting one for mine,I will never use a Amiga keyboard again,oh and it will happen to you new membrane cos of the way it connects to A1200 motherboard,I have 2 A1200 keyboard and it didn't to both of them,you can try silver paint to fix the membrane.
