We're back on the scene, Jordan - watch out!!!!! Been a long hot Summer here but the rain and storms have just started so back to vids and catching up with all of you! We'll try and watch all your past vids that we've missed - it's something to do on the darker nights! The auction is amazing, all our local one's seem to have disappeared over recent years. Glad you've survived Summer and all the nasty stuff. Hope your family have too and are all thriving and doing well. Malc and Ann (England) UK xx

Sooooo, cuy. I've got a decent amount of experience raising cuy as small meat stock and secondarily as pets and feeders to sell. Raw pet food folks like cuy because it is generally well-tolerated even by animals with protein allergies (like chicken, beef, pork allergies) and nutritious. Reptile owners like any small rodent for pet food, and those that sometimes feed rabbits will also generally accept cuy. People like it as a small meat animal because it's more heat tolerant than rabbits, relatively hardy and disease free, easy and inexpensive to raise in adequate quantities (has a good feed to meat ratio), can do well on forage without purchased feed/grain, quiet and easy to house (either caged or open colony), tasty and versatile meat source, ease of harvest, comes in handy single serving sizes that (once spatchcocked) stack efficiently in the freezer. All around good choice for many situations where you want small meat stock but need to keep things on the downlow. I am in north Texas and the summers here are brutally hot and humid. Rabbits just have not done well for me outdoors here, though I had good experience with them further south where it was less humid. Here, cuy have done wonderfully outdoors all year round. A big dogloo stuffed with dry hay, kept insulated from wet ground, and protection from predators (hardware cloth enclosure like you'd use for chickens) have been sufficient in winter. They do not dig like rabbits. They don't much climb and can't really jump. Give them shade and a few dampish cool places in summer. They must have a source of vitamin C. Everything wants to eat cuy, rather like they want to eat chicken, so protect accordingly. They eat almost anything a rabbit or chicken eat, and do great on nothing but forage if you allow enough space. Their manure is comparable to that of rabbits. Cuy reproduce a bit slower than rabbits, but their young are born fully furred and eyes/ears open, able to eat solid food from the beginning. Selective breeding can very quickly increase the size of your animals and yield a much better product. Some breeders have been raising meat lines for decades. Most people start with animals sourced via the pet trade, but these meat lines can be sourced with a bit of work. There ARE a few folks who have imported a slightly different species/breed of cuy that is much larger and more utilitarian. I have zero experience with those animals, never even seen more than photos of them. Good luck with your quest to try cuy as a CCC. Be careful, because we all know who doesn't like people eating cute furry things.

I'm no expert for all the breeds, but I think I have to correct You at 9:40 - those are definitely not looking like Wyandottes, they should have a rose-comb and a much more rounded physique. More like the rose-comb Rhode-Island-Reds you showed around 7:20 ... Concerning the Guinea Pig ... it is more or less like with rabbits, some people see them as pets, some as food. It will most likely be tasty and keeping it alone would not be nice for the animal. I just expect the intention of the seller was to sell it as a pet and not food ...
@JordansHarvest2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the insight!!!
@andy38andrews962 жыл бұрын
The sellers intentions are a moot point at this juncture. Once he has sold the item, he no longer has any say in the disposition of the animal! Hard fact, but true!
