I’m half Danish and half Swedish. Yeast breads with sweet ingredients are popular in both cultures. Braids and other pastry designs are common especially around Xmas and Easter. My mother used to make a Swedish coffee bread that was braided and filled with raisins, lots of butter, cinnamon, and cardamom seeds. So delightful. Today, the word Danish, is applied to many different pastry with fruit and/or cheese filling-it’s not solely in Denmark’s domain.

My grandma always makes Swedish cardamom bread at Christmas. It is a yeast bread that is then braided and baked. Tnen she frosts it with cream cheese frosting and sprinkles sliced almonds on top. Its to die for 🤤 We always eat it warm on Christmas morning!

How could such a young lady be such a accomplished cook. Most young adults have trouble making toast. You're a wonderful example of what a homemaker can be.

Well honeybun, she escaped the Amish, where women have no choice but to be homemakers. I’m all for those who want to be homemakers doing so, I teach my kids how to cook and claw. And care for themselves but not everyone, not every woman wants to be stuck at home cooking and cleaning and caring for kiddos. And you’re exaggerating with the toast comment.

Used to make similar braided breads when I was growing up. One in particular that was a favorite (only made around Christmas) was a nut braid. The filling was very finely chopped walnuts in a honey butter sauce: mix 2 cups honey in a saucepan, add 1 1/2 cups of butter (no substitute!!). Heat until the butter is completely melted and mix the honey/butter until well combined. Add 3 cups of finely chopped (and I MEAN finely chopped) walnuts and mix thoroughly. The dough we used was pretty much the same process as yours, Lovina. Once the dough is rolled and sides cut, spread 1/2 the honey/butter/nut mixture down the middle. Start folding in the sides as you have shown in your video. Bake until browned - don't recall how long at 350F. Then when it is fairly cool, glaze with powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, water or milk. When the glaze is still fresh, sprinkle with more finely chopped walnuts. SO GOOD!!

My mom comes from a Mennonite background and she used to make "Dutch Pancakes". It was a runny batter with eggs, flour, sugar, salt and milk cooked in thick pancakes then cut in squares and served with sugar or syrup. Maybe the naming of this has a similar history, there are a lot of common experience things that both groups brought forward from the deep past. These look amazing. Thank you for sharing.

It might have been a thing in the past, and it has fallen out of favor for whatever reason, or it might not be Danish at all, lol. All I know is that it’s not something that is common here, if it is Danish. :)

You could easily adopt an Italian family to teach you. We were cooking and baking as children. By the time I was standing on my own I was on Nonna's step stool helping her measuring ingredients. I was making bread frim scratch, alone, by the time I was in the first grade. I was making homemade pasta, alone, in the second grade. Before I was a teenager, I had all the family recipes memorized. I'm 60 years old and can make every recipe in my sleep. I raised my daughters the same way. I've never bought bread, pasties, pies or cakes from a store.

Im so excited, im 55 and was raised with a mom who cooked for all the men who harvested their wheat. She wasnt amish but grew up in the 40's. I am blessed to know how to cook. I was delighted when i learned her sloppy joe recipe was nearly the same as my grandmoms. ( Didference was a tblspn of apple cider vinegar and ketchup) I can not hardly wait to try my hand at some dutch braids and other recipes. Thankful to have had a mom who cooked and taught me and my 3 girls how to cook. Two are in their 20's and cook better than Betty Crocker 1 in her early 30's and is also a wonderful cook.
