I very recently requested this information. Thank you very much. The only further question I have is, do you know where I can get a pattern? As far as I know, there are NO Amish in Western Canada. Again, thank you so much for posting this excellent information. (I look forward to seeing the winter wear video when the time comes!)

Candle on a Hill's website has men's patterns as well as women/children's www.candleonthehill.net/store/catalog.php. Patterns may not be exactly like Doug's but are a good starting point.
@apronacres72927 жыл бұрын
correction - Candle on Hill does have the men's pants and jackets but am not seeing a shirt and those 2 patterns are from Friends Patterns, which has more options friendspatterns.net/catalog.php?category=3 so start with Friends Patterns

That kind of surprises me. I live in Ontario, and, I don't know about any Amish close by, but we definitely have a pretty good sized Mennonite community up not too far north of Toronto, sort of generally around the Barrie/Lake Simcoe region.
@rumplover17 жыл бұрын
Oh there are PLENTY of Amish in ON. I saw plenty of the "share the road" signs on the highways. In AB, we have Mennonite and Hutterite, but no Amish.

Barn Door is a cute nickname for those trousers. But they are called BROADFALL TROUSERS. They have a long history. When the Amish began using them they were the majority style for all men, including the USA Founding Fathers, and many, many more. What happened was, someone invented the "fly" for trousers. At first the fly was controversial because it drew so much attention to a man's private area. Back then the fly was always a button fly. Zippers didn't exist yet. When I was in the US Navy in the 1970s we had BROADFALL trousers for our "blue" uniform pants. They had 13 buttons, and a gusset in the back to tighten them up. No belt. But the white uniform had a regular fly and a belt. So, as styles changed, the Amish and some Mennonites just stayed on the same path. So you still see broadfall trousers today.

flies actually predate falls, that's what was generally used from whenever the codpiece fell out of fashion to roughly the early 17th century. Late 17th century is when the ancestor of the 3 piece suit popped up. Not sure if they had falls then but I know they did at least in the early 19th century

Magnificent. This boy !!! Going in the bathroom... checking for new whiskers every other second.... lol. Love those skirts Stacy has gotten from Rain Country too !!!!

Thanks Doug! This was great info! I am a seamstress and never knew these things about how the Amish make their clothes, with the button limitations, etc. I am starting to think how these could be made in some version for a woman. I will be on my own homestead by next spring, and will be looking for some more simple, comfortable, and easy care clothing. Maybe in linen?? Thanks for sharing your life with all us subscribers! Love your channel!

Our new homestead is in a heavily populated Amish area. Very friendly folks. Though we are not off grid, it is not uncommon to sit on our front porch and see a family drive by in their buggy. They always wave. We are going to be talking to a man in our community to do work on our barn. He comes highly recommended and we would rather give the work to our neighbors and become part of the community we now call home. I love your videos. God bless you as you continue on your journey.

Thank you for sharing so respectfully the Amish Men's clothes. It really is very practical. My husband's family is all Old Order Amish and they would be flattered. The women's clothing may seem matronly but for very practical and functional reasons, also. I was asked to be a part of a wedding (dishwashers! :P) and sew a dress. It took me five days to their one. You can't beat their sewing skills! Looking forward to seeing your winter men's clothing overview.

Making an Amish Man's Denim Pants looks truly functional. When you first demonstrated the suspenders, I was confused becaused my knowledge of the Amish people did not allow the use of buttons. When you demonstrates the way the pants were made of denim and of a lighter cotton which lined the pockets, I more clearly understood your day to day closes.

And I would love to the see the fall/winter Amish collection....before it hits the Paris runways :) And you should have Stacy do a video about what kind of clothing works for her during the different seasons! I'm sure there are plenty that would be interested. Off grid clothing is probably something people overlook in their prepping.

I recently watched some good informative documentaries on the Amish communities. Some of the differences in each individual community can come down to 3 buttons on a shirt or the type of hats to even the type of suspenders. They said they can tell immediately which community you're from by these subtle differences. I thought that wad interesting. Thank you for sharing, and God bless!

Oh Doug Thankyou! I know this style was how men used to ware cloths styles that date back to Buckskinner era & the shirts were longer because they used to double for night shirts. The pants date back to the civil war time. I know due to we (my late husband & I) used to do re enactments & you had to have period correct stuff. They was very picky about it. We also had some actual clothes from those times too. All I can say is Man are they comfortable too. Thankyou for I am not the only one who knows how good they hold up. I make our clothes & no I'm not Amish. But I do love teaching my young ones the old ways. Can't forget the Red long handles for winter with the button flap on the back & red flannel shirts for winter too.

Saw some kind of interview you did a few months back, when I saw it I mean, but im glad I finally found your channel. I live in Tampa Bay Florida and it's honestly one of the best place ever. People come from all over the world to vacation here and I was lucky enough to be born here and live for thirty extremely rad years but now I'm older and want to start a family but I Don't want them exposed to the city. People are too far gone and I think I want to move off the grid a bit. I vacation in the Georgia woods in the winter most years and I love it. We have Mennonites there and I really like the way they live. Besides the cell phones and cars thing but whatever. I just Don't think I could raise children in the city anymore.
