For anyone who doesn’t understand the sketch, Amish people live very secluded “pure and simple” lives. They live in isolated communities without most modern technology or any things like alcohol, drugs, TV, sex, etc. When Amish teens reach a certain age they go through Rumspringa, a period of a few months to a few years where the teens go off on their own and experience a “worldly” life, doing drugs, smoking, sleeping around, and living a modern life. The idea is that they see the depravity and sin in this and make the choice on their own to return to the church and Amish community. The girls in this sketch are recounting their experiences in Rumspringa, all the bad things they did.

I thought this was pretty funny. It may not capture the Amish lifestyle accurately, but I didn't expect it to. The idea of confessing sins over your whole lifetime, no matter how insane they are and how unfitting the confession site is, was really done well. I especially cracked up at the bits where they met their men, were having sex, and the ending. The confessions and the situations were just too ridiculous.

Umatsu Obossa So they're encouraged to come back because they do all the worst decisions in a short amount of time and are so overwhelmed that they run back to safety?
@m.ivyluna46327 жыл бұрын
AubrentheJack well it's less that and more told "go and see if you like the outside world" They are not encouraged to be "sinful" but it's a few crazy late teen/early adults with no parental supervision so things often get a tad crazy. In turn they find they don't like that much crazy and are homesick and go home. Think a bachelor party before you swear to be a adult. Also it's not unheard of for kids to star in outside world. Rare but not unheard of.

I didn't find this particularly anti-Amish. The joke would have worked pretty much the same with Catholics or Lutherans or any group with a system of confession like alcoholics anonymous. The joke is just that these women did so much sinning, in a short period of time, that it takes a lifetime to confess it all. Nothing uniquely Amish about that.

Jim Key Black face historically was used to mock and ridicule black people. Black face is not needed to imitate us. You want to imitate black people fine, but do it without painting yourself like or skin is a costume. As long as a comedy isn't mocking, ridiculing or degrading a group it should be fine in my opinion. This skit wasn't offensive in my opinion but who we should really be asking is the Amish...
@SeminarioMAE7 жыл бұрын
Al Jolson fought against black discrimination in the early twentieth century. He did the "blackface" act to mock the idea of "white supremacy" by showing the value of African American musical/cultural idioms. Consider that black people could not perform in these venues during this time, so he painted his face black to give a sense of presence in these venues. He was one of the most popular singers in his time period and he did it by singing African American influenced music, which helped bring the attention of African American music to white audiences. He was also an activist for the black community, and is noted as being one of the earliest individuals in popular culture to bridge a cultural gap between blacks and whites in the early twentieth century. I'd hardly call any of that racist.
@DaiKozui7 жыл бұрын
TroySmithNova Seems like you're looking for conflict... My use of the term "historically" was meant to imply that blackface is still relevant in the 21st Century. I don't think that everything that has happened in the past is relevant to today but somethings are. At the end of the day, if someone asks you not to do something because it deeply offends and bothers them you should be respectful and just not do it (if there request is within reason of course). I don't need to paint my face white to imitate Abraham Lincoln. You don't need to paint your face Black to imitate MLK. Simply put...

People in the comments: just because it was written by a woman and has female actresses, why does that mean it's for a different audience than you? Why would you then not get the jokes? Am I not supposed to like sketches written and performed by men? Because most of them are, and they're not hard to understand. There's no reason a man shouldn't understand this sketch.... Anymore than I wouldn't get 90% of CH sketches. Just because it's a different gender doesn't mean it's a different language. If it was, for the most part women would be shit out of luck watching comedy sketches. If I can appreciate key and peele, why can't you appreciate this?
@colekuczek98129 жыл бұрын
While the comment section is rude, you're assuming that people don't like it because it's written by a woman. Sure, it's written by a woman. If the woman produces shit, it's the exact same. Instead, because this is one of the few sketches written by a woman, people assume its because she's a woman that she's a bad writer. That's really not the case. This sketch is bad because it was written by a shitty writer. Not because that writer is a woman but because she is shit. P.S Don't bother replying with a comment that demonizes men and makes all women seem like victims, because that just puts another brick in this massive wall that separates men and women. Sorry if I misjudged you, but you sound like a batshit crazy feminazi because you got pissed over a few comments.
@snoozeybutton9 жыл бұрын
+Cole Kuczek I seem like a "feminazi" because I responded to KZbin comments? Why is that "batshit crazy"? You just responded to my KZbin comment, I don't think that makes you batshit crazy. I didn't demonize men, so I don't know where you're getting that shit from. I was responding to people saying the sketch sucked because "it wasn't written for men" and "as a man, I don't understand it." What about it so so womanly that a man couldn't possibly understand? The fact that there's women in it? And why don't you explain to me exactly what is bad about the sketch? What about it is poor writing? It was pretty creative, with an interesting concept and funny progression. Seemed pretty well written to me. Just because you didn't like it doesn't make it poorly written unless you can think of an actual mechanic that's bad about it. And don't tell me I'm overreacting. You're the one that started spouting off Rush Limbaugh terminology as soon as I mentioned gender in comedy
