People outside Kerala often think that the Western Ghats is a small, newly formed area that the government can easily evacuate. In reality, the Western Ghats span over 600 km, covering 40% of Kerala's land area and home to 50 million people. Relocating everyone is not feasible. Residents live in constant fear of landslides, and halting infrastructure development could be detrimental to their well-being. It's crucial to find a balanced approach that supports these communities during tragedies while considering the ecological significance of the region. The people living here are not unfortunate but resilient, and they deserve sustainable solutions that protect both their lives and the environment.

Thank you Indian military for the swift action on the rescue operations and building the bridge so quickly. Mr. Madhav Gadgil had predicted this years ago. He is responsible for the Gadgil commission report. While the landslides happened during the rains, it has happened because of the encouragement and illegal constructions on the mountains. These constructions trap the rainwater and don't let it flow and take its natural course. Most of these outbursts of water are from the water that has seeped into the mountains. The mountains under pressure cause these landslides. This is a man made problem. You will never find Adivasis or wild animals in such a situation because they pay attention to nature. Mr Gadgil had recommended to the Kerala Government and it's people to take action many years ago, but they paid no heed to this. In fact there were cases where we malayalees mocked him. Blaming a central minister who's sitting far away is pointless. Even if he had given orange alert, as a sitting CM, you should have local sources and experts to rely on - instead of waiting for the light to turn red. Kerala has made this a habit - have fun & frolic during good times, then once a calamity occurs, use their entrenched network to start begging for donations in the name of the disaster affected people. Only the poor and affected people go from one disaster to another. This is what happens when a state relies too much on tourism instead of developing industries - people are forced to milk the nature and nature keeps hitting back.

@@Cyberfr0d0 This comment shows how people lack commonsense. Do u want the whole population to evacuate - heck, no!. What was the sitting CM doing - having been in power for so long and having seen such disasters for years together, what was the preparedness?. This isnt unique to Kerala though - this has become the general norm - no preparedness, just express pity when the disaster occurs and people are left to fend for themselves - with the exception of Orissa. This landslide is not due to any large construction of thermal/hydel plants or mining activities on the mountains. Gadgil report is rejected by Kerala and other states for the impractical recommendations of evacuating entire towns and villages in the identified areas, where people were living for many decades. These landslides happen because of unprecedented rainfall on western ghats which is caused entirely by warming of Arabian sea which is due to global warming. It is pointed out that every 1degree celsius increase in ocean temp causes 16% more rains in western Ghats, the more on the higher altitude mountains on its northern part. These heavy rain falls in a short span is identified as Mini cloudbursts. Now we find that when landslides of this magnitude takes place it causes heavy floods as far as 5-10 kms away the small rivers breach into towns and villages without giving any time for escwpe, unlike the earlier landslides which only affects those living right at the lower side of the landslide. Hence the task ahead is finding the type of soil which can give away in the event of heavy rainfalls and the area which it can inundate in such cases. Move the inhabitants of thes3 areas to new locations ensu4ing ther livelihood and other facilities. These projec5s cant be expected to be cqrried out without massibe funding from central govts. Madam, you must be aware of the bulilding crashes taking place in Mumbai city every year durinh minsoon in spite if many warnings from authorities to vacate those buildings in Girgaum, Kalbadevi, Khetwadi, Kamathipura, and are more than 80 years old. Si you can imagine the problems associated with these remote human inhabitations away from the city area. Your description is felt like a balancing act without understanding the real issues involved not much different from what H'ble HM did to insulate central govt from taking any responsibility. If it is in Wayanad today it can be any other part of the country tomorrow. Uttarakhand is already witnessing it for last sevral years evenif not in comparable scales.

Looks like the public and developers (true to their nature, nothing surprising about that) has an equal blame to carry here in terms of pressurising the govt. to disregard the eco study done more than a decade ago :(… So what would be interesting is what would be the publics stand now? Is the govt. going to stick their head in the sand till the whole thing dies down for a while? Or are they going to shift the attention of the public and play more blame games? How many more disasters will Kerala have to endure till some constructive policies and solutions are being implemented? Basically when will the oldies of govt. (state and centre) will start taking climate change seriously? And will the public pressurise or support welcome the change?…..

That's not possible the state is sitting one side mountain other side ocean. If you want to relocate you will have to relocate all of them to Tamil Nadu

What a great government. Doesn't matter State or Central, no one is taking responsibility. People WAKE UP, these politicians are selfish. They are periodic civil servants. They should be accountable to us. Look at Delhi, Bihar, now Kerala. NEET, UPSC. Doesn't matter if it's Modi, Kejriwal; they are all in this together.

just look at the google earth for the location of land slide originated and see any such activity was near by, as long as I know this area was a pristine forest with out any human inhabitation or activity, further 6km down was the effected village.

What Amit Shah said was absolute nonsence and with complete ignorance about anything happened. Churalmala was where people shifted to heeding the warning. There were entire extended families that got wiped out because they shifted to their relatives homes thinking it to be more safer than their own homes. A lot of survivors are people who thus shifted earlier and managed to run out into the forest when they heard the landslide. Then on what ground is this Amit Shah saying there wasn't any action taken on it. I even clearly remember listening to a news report the very day before the incident, about Mundakai where people were talking about how the river is overflowing the old bridge which isn't solid enough. Infact the government school that we see in the footage actually had a relief camp inside and even those people were shifted before the incident thankfully. Then what else does Amit Shah mean by saying Kerala government didn't take action. What did he expect an alert issued over an entire district would mean all those people in a whole district would just get teleported within hours to another district? Is Amit Shah even marginally educated about how landslide warning are supposed to be like and not same as issuing high rainfall alert over a whole district? One cannot but exclaim, what is this idiocy, about what Amit Shah blabbered. This is what happens when uneducated ignorant people are at the helm, they flounder with overgeneralized vague warninging and blame state government for not magically pinpointing what the exact risk area is for a related disaster with such overgeneralized warning on one causative meteric.

It seems this has happened on the Eastern slope of the Western Ghats which is somewhat in the rain shadow region but perhaps due to warming, the clouds are now able to cross the Ghats and hence it is experiencing unprecedented rainfall. for which the terrain is not adapted.

I think the intension of the blame is not to support the people as before the flood time also a sign of not to ask for financial support from PM fund as it's bcz of ignored the warning....in Kerala two days before almost 7 district in Orange alert , so based on the Orange alert to reallocate all the people from 7 district is possible? If yes to where ? (Yellow alerts in districts: August 3: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod August 4: Kannur and Kasaragod Educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta as well as Kanjirappally and Meenachil taluks of Kottayam were remained closed on Thursday.)

People always get confused landslide prone area as ecologically fragile area. Ecologically Fragile Area vs. Landslide Prone Area While there is an overlap between ecologically fragile areas and landslide-prone areas, they are not entirely synonymous.

Amit shah is upset the tea plantations are all washed away. Chaiwallas selling chai in railway station remembering his roots. That’s all. Kerala has been seeing heavy monsoons and torrential rails followed by floods, ever since this land was conceived after parashurama threw his axe. Fast forward, We are now in 21st century, Even after india has developed technology to land a probe on a celestial body, we are still unable to handle these calamities that recur every year, is an utter shame on the people of Kerala and people of India ! These heavy rains should be interpreted as god given fresh water, falling from the sky, which must be harvested and rerouted to dry, drought prone areas. This should be the line of thought 💡🧠 Not throw stones at each other! We have the best brains in the world. We have enough man power and technology. So, let’s start ..

Blame game… blame game…blame game… but can climate change predicaments & its natural disasters be squarely blamed on just certain govt. authorities or agencies without significant R&D or Restitution roadmap to solve economical implications of this large scale vulnerability for Western ghats?
