Cinema is not merely entertainment. The rich culture of our country can be vastly distributed through cinema, which sparks curiosity in the world which in turn leads to growth of tourism. Ideologies can be shaken, moulded and modified through effective cinematic expression. There are of course other urgent and necessary causes which need recognition but cinema too has a stronghold which deserves appreciation and Padma awards are given 'in recognition of distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the arts, education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service and public affairs' and cinema hence, counts as an art. So it is completely justified to award a cinema personality with Padma. You may question who the committee chooses to award, whether those persons deserve it or not, but questioning giving the award to the field itself seems immature.
