They are technically in a de facto marriage, also once known as a common law marriage. "Common-law marriage is a legal framework where a couple may be considered married without having formally registered their relation as a civil or religious marriage. In effect, the act of the couple representing themselves to others as being married and organizing their relation as if they were married, means they are married." Why does OP need a piece of paper from the government or church to decide whether they are husband and wife or not?

4th story: Getting drunk doesn't excuse what you say. Drinking lowers inhibitions and you show your TRUE self. If your mother said those things to her face, THAT"S HOW SHE REALLY FEELS ABOUT HER. I don't know if it's because no one is good enough for "Her little boy" or what, but it seems to me that she doesn't think that your fiancé is good enough, and evidently, no one else is in your family does either. Because she can't weaponize the family court to take everything you own if the marriage isn't legally recognized. If a woman actually loves you, she won't give two sh!ts about a marriage certificate.

Story 3: she is wrong and is the jerk. Common law marriage is exactly made for couples like this. A common law marriage is one in which the couple lives together for a period of time and holds themselves out to friends, family and the community as "being married," but without ever going through a formal ceremony or getting a marriage license. This gives them all the same legal rights and obligations to each other as a marriage certificate would, so yes they can call each other husband and wife. In fact it’s one of the reasons they qualify as a common law marriage. Plus of course the 15 years together.

Story 3: a marriage is not just a piece of paper. It is a vow you take before God and any witnesses if you want to have them invited. If it's just a piece of paper, then why do you have to use the term husband? If you really want to have that person be called your husband, the girl can simply say this is my sister and her common-law husband. She has every right not to use the term husband because it is reserved for an actual marriage, whether in front of a judge, minister, or an actual official. Saying vows to yourselves or promises is not the same thing. Yes you can be together forever, that's your business, but you cannot force someone to say something that they're technically right about just because you don't want to sign a "piece of paper."

About the husband wife title…. I think they are being a jerk for arguing about it because it’s none of their business but NOT for NOT calling them married because they literally aren’t. I don’t even know why it should even come up unless they are constantly saying it allllllll the time. If that were the case then I could see why someone would feel compelled to say something. But I have something sort of similar with a family member. They have kids together and function just like husband and wife. If God forbid one of them ended up in a hospital on life support or anything that disastrous the significant other has No Rights and No Say what so ever and can also be excluded from the hospital room. Then there’s other legal challenges. Probable and many other legal details. For crying out loud it sounds like her sister bought into the old male brainwashing trick we don’t need a piece of paper… because when something becomes comes along I’m gone! That normally comes about the time of a midlife crisis. It happens more with these types of arrangements. But for the others addressing them significant other applies. Story 3: I think OP is in the right. This is just like the transgender debate. A biological man can identify as female, but you can hardly call someone a jerk for still calling that person a man. If the couple aren't married, they aren't husband and wife, so OP is not obligated to call them that. Story 4: Being drunk doesn't excuse saying those horrible things to your future daughter in law. They just showed their true colors and OP is right to not want these bitches at their wedding. No contact indeed seems like a good idea. Story 5: The guy actually seemed nice until he brought up religion. Pro tip, if you meet someone who's religious to that extent, you get out as fast as you can. It's pretty clear he wanted to chain down the daughter as fast as he could so she would end up financially depending on him and basically end up as pretty much his slave. A woman with no purpose other than to honor god and bear her husband's children. Good job, mom! You protected your child from a monster and I hope she will someday realize that. Story 6: I understand where OP is coming from but it was wrong to project his insecurities onto his stepson. The kid is seven, of course he doesn't know any better. Hopefully he'll realize how awful his biological father is when he gets older though. But for now I would advise to only punish the kid for being disrespectful to you, which he was being. Stay and support his wife, thus, showing to OP and maya that he agrees with the wife or does not care about OP much. Or go to the wedding and show he does not agree with his wife. -- Story 5: I think this is tradition vs modern. The boy explained his beliefs and OP i feel heard some key phrases that put up red flags, in her view. So i dont think neither are the jerk and i dont think the boy was as creepy as the narrator made it seem. Remember, some people genuinely still live traditional lives. -- Story 7: I think the fat shaming thing depends. I may get flack for this but if someone is objectively obese, it is not fat shaming to tell them so. Now since Kellen is wrestling I am going to assume he is not 300-500 pounds and more like 200-250 pounds. If the former (300-500) is the case then the grandmother telling him to train and such is not wrong. If it is the latter then I would say her words could use some tenderness. I know religious families get a lot of shit, but it's for a good reason. The boyfriend asking the mom to marry her daughter at the FIRST TIME meeting each other would send me signs, too. And all that talk about "Your daughter won't have to go study or work", "Our children will have a private education", "Traditions are very important in my family", yeah, this would creep me out, too. WE JUST MET, YOUNG MAN! HOW YOU ALREADY PLANNING TO HAVE KIDS WITH MY KID?! The guy went as far as to turn my daughter against me, saying that "He won't marry into a family that doesn't know God, and I'm ruining her life." Hell yeah, I'm not letting my daughter marrying that guy, with that family. I don't care if God sends me to hell or people say "I hate God" 😒 And as for the coffee, come on, it wasn't about the coffee. That was a courtesy, not an obligation, or a "test of character".

@nicksuazo4377 you never know He could have Aspergers That's the vibe I got And yes when she said it was the first negative that he didn't drink coffee I was like WTH? Lots of people don't like coffee I'm guessing the daughter didn't tell him that her mom worshiped the devil because maybe she wants to get away from that environment

I get the vibe that he might be Jehovah Witness or Mormon BECAUSE of the fact he doesn’t drink coffee. Which changes it from simply “you’re religious” to “you’re likely a member of a cult”. Two VERY different things. The fact that he wants to isolate her by not allowing her to work or study and become heavily involved with the church community within 7 months of DATING also lends to cult vibes over simply being religious. Personally, I wouldn’t care what my kids believed so long as they were good people and were safe, so I wouldn’t phrase things the same way she did. But the fact that there are these cult red flags means that the daughter might not be safe, so I agree with the decision to not give the blessing

The stepson in the sixth story has a very strong case of Disneyland Dad, especially because he’s seven years old. Most seven year old boys worship their fathers and want to be with them and be like them. He’s not going to be aware of his father’s faults until he’s older and has a broader understanding of the situation.

The number of stories out there where one parent would cheat/abuse the other parent in all manner of ways, then they get divorced and the abuser/cheater becomes an "every other weekend" sort of parent who spends most of their time with their kid insulting and dragging down the ex, and the rest of their weekends with their kid leaving the kid with the parents family who also insults and/or lies about the ex. Meanwhile, the primary caregiver parent stays completely silent and refuses to answer any of the child's questions or address any unhealthy coping behaviour the kid picks up, because they think that's what's best for the kid. Which, from the outside, we can all see is utterly asinine in so many ways. Staying silent while the other parent paints the narrative in any way they damn well like is ridiculous and can potentially damage your child's emotional and mental health, not to mention their familial bonds. Instead, OP and his wife should speak with a psychologist who works with kids (who has had the opportunity to speak with the seven year old), and ask what age-appropriate strategies they can use for the step-dad to try to bond with the kid, and if/when its okay to be honest about what really happened in the relationship, and how best to go about it. The kid doesn't need to know all the details, and a specialist in the field may be able to assist so they can approach it in a healthy and respectful way.

@@YourShadowKeeper Exactly. They need a third party to mediate that isn’t overly biased on one side (while OP seems to mean well, he does seem to forget the kid is only seven) and a child therapist would fit the bill.

Story 4: Yeah, OP should go NC HARD AND FAST! These are not people you want to be around, let alone want your significant other to be around. If what they said was when they were drunk, imagine what they would say behind your back or in your face. I also find it interesting that the NC sister is throwing shade at OP for burning bridges with their mom and her family, but i guess since shes said NC, shes not too worried about being in the crossfire. Or this could be the "Keep the peace" kicking in. For better or for worse, OP and Maya should keep the mom and aunts uninvited. If people don't come, oh well. And as for Dad, yeah, he has no spine evidently, so he's already miserable

Story 3, If they have been together that long, a piece of paper now could save them an awful lot trouble later. They would need iron clad wills and iron clad power of attorneys for each other, in case of medical need or death. Story 4 - people are more likely to say their truefeelings when they are drunk. It is up to you who you invite to the wedding. Have the wedding in Norway, the expense should stop most of your family attending. Story 5- yep, sketchy. She will thank you in a few years. Hopefully the boyfriend will bugger off, if she does go ahead with it, find the number for the local 'snatch my kid back' service.

Honestly, marriage is overrated anymore. Just because you aren't "married under the law" doesn't mean you can't consider yourselves life partners. Honestly, that marriage certificate just binds your assets. Marriage is a mutual commitment to another person. Honestly, you shouldn't need a piece of paper to confirm that.

I think the poster went to far in the first story. She used another girl's photo without permission not giving a damn about the consequences or rumors that can start. 2nd story, yes she is the jerk. The people in a relationship decide the terms of their relationship period. She is a third party trying to tell a couple what they can and cannot do in their relationship. She needs to learn boundaries and to get over herself. She is not the be all end all decider of what a relationship can be called and she never will be.

See but in your situation it seems that the cousin’s parents do not care about the title that others go around which is fine. However, in story 3’s case the sis and bf do care and are asking the sister to respect the relationship by using the husband and wife titles. The duo has put in the work to maintain a relationship that is longer then what some relationships, even married ones, last. So what is the issue? After all, common law marriage exists. Unless they disagree with this idea, there is not an issue with simply following the request.

Story #3: I completely disagree with you about the husband/wife thing. Yes, it is a piece of paper, but the piece of paper also gives the couple a legal status that those states which don't have a 'common law' clause on the books. This not only affects their legal status, but can also affect their financial status, because I can guarantee that the IRS doesn't consider them married without that 'piece of paper'. I'm not even going to touch on the 'Christian' viewpoint because I'm sure that that viewpoint is irrelevant to them. Story #5: I am religious and that story raises a LOT of red flags for me! It sounds like a cult to me, especially getting married in a church somewhat isolated (I think that's what was said). RUN, FOREST, RUN!!!
