I lost my dog last summer. Two weeks later, we lost my Dad. Losing my dog hurt, no denying that. Losing my Dad, worst thing I’ve been through so far. There is no comparison, except that both hurt. If this is the sister’s first taste of loss, I can understand she is overwhelmed with grief. However, she should be aware enough to not compare the two. Now, if that dog is the only family she has (not counting the siblings and parents) I can understand how it could feel the same to her. But like I said, she should be aware enough not to compare the two.

I’m sorry but for some it can be the same as loosing a close family member. Our cats became like children in our family. However, I wouldn’t have made the kind of comparison like that to anyone.Especially, someone who’d lost someone
@Belladonna1894
@Belladonna1894 Жыл бұрын
@@sodorflubbs5000 I allowed for that. If she has no one else it can feel the same. I have friends who have dogs and they treat them like their children. They took bereavement leave from work when they lost one of them. If I hadn’t lost my Dad so close after, losing my dog would have been much worse. It was with my first. But the grief for my Dad eclipsed the grief for my dog. My only true issue is she should not have made the comparison. No one has the right to tell anyone else how much grief to feel over a loss.

@@Belladonna1894 Even if she has someone else, it can feel the same. Like....How the hell can you say "No one has the right to tell anyone else how much grief to feel over a loss" right after saying this, cause it's literally saying you shouldn't feel it as much without a condition? Dogs are with people from when they're kids all the way to them being adults. Hell, that dog could have been with her for years longer than her sister's relationship. This is like saying you losing a friend shouldn't hurt as much as losing your husband, even though you've literally grown up together. From what she said, she has like 3 year olds, so this relationship could be like 5-7 years old. just as an example, my dog's been with me for 13.

tbh some people treat their dog's like their children so it was kind of like comparing her child's death to your husband's death which are pretty equal in weight and even if she didn't consider her dog that dear it was for her her dog's death to her brother-in-law's death so yeah

EXACTLY! Its also important to say that dogs DO love their owners. VERY MUCH. The thing is that its probably not the best thing to say to someone grieving. The other way around however its unacceptable to downplay her sisters loss of her dog, which clearly meant the world to her. Imo Everybody sucks here.

I lost my cat about two months ago. I did grieve, but I would have NEVER told someone who had a personal loss of a spouse/child/parent. Yes, losing my cat hurt and I was very upset, but there's no way I would say someone grieving a family member is on the same level. I could go out and get another cat if I wanted a furry friend to comfort me. (Not ready to yet, but I have started looking into to a local shelter who has a lot of cats they're looking for homes for) about it being possible in the eventual future. The sister could do the same for a dog when she's ready. OP lost the LOVE OF HER LIFE. Sister is being absolutely insensitive.

Story 1: of course there is a comparison wether it's a pet a spouse a parent your kid an uncle an aunt a grandparent a cousin a friend they're all losses a dog is never just a dog it's every bit a family member as a spouse is and sometimes spouses can just be with you because you could be rich but a dog doesn't even understand all of that because all it knows and ever will know is love unconditional love and even if a dog can't do all the things a spouse can it can still love you as much as is physically possible

Regarding the dad, perhaps helping him find some help, because he does sound depressed, might help better than nagging or just leaving him alone. It sounds like your dad is suffering. I think the first story has two assholes. Sure, the sister is being really weird about it and not acknowledging her sisters' grief, but at the same time, the sister lost someone she loved too, a pet is part of the family and I don't think we know exactly how much the sister loved her dog. The sister is still in the wrong for saying that it's the same grief, but the op is being insensitive by kind of saying that her sister shouldn't grieve because her pain is worse. You shouldn't gatekeep grief. Everyone handles it differently. Also, don't say getting a new dog will fill the hole in their heart. That's like saying, "Get a new husband to fill the hole in your heart." It's really insensitive and hurtful

The way he separates a dog as an animal and a human, which is also an animal, is pretty comical to me. For me, losing my beloved fellow animals is just as painful as losing a beloved human. I had many people and animals in my life either die or get ripped away from me. I see humans and other species the same. I see someone with a lower IQ just as equal as someone who has a higher IQ. I see all people with differences equal too. So to me, I see no difference between an animal or a human when it comes to equality. Many of you may be offended by this, but I was locked away and treated the same way one does to a dog. They saw me as someone who can be provoked and locked me away for that. I'll give you a context of why this happened to me- you guys don't know me unless you saw my comments on here. If you're wondering, I'm 17 and I was adopted at 3 1/2. I tried to... take an early train to the afterlife -if that makes since- when I was 6 and I went to a psych hospital because of this. Let's just say my idea was to get closer with my new family after thinking they would hate me the same way as my bio family. Eventually, I continued this out of habit. After basically being raised in hospitals, I didn't see my house as my home. I saw hospitals as my home. The staff were my parents and the residents were my siblings. Without a schedule, I'd go into a kind of...blank like state. I just waited for instructions. I was too overwhelmed with even a little freedom. I tried to self-exit my life to alert my parents and make them send me away again so I could go back "home." I got my "treatment" and I have not had any self-checkout attempts anymore for 2 years. I'm in a foster home now. But, I still see myself when I look at animals. I now see them as equals and I see them more pure and kind than the selfish human-kind could ever wish to be. In my eyes, savage "animals" is what we are. We have a choice, we don't have to kill each other, we can work to get money and trade that money for food. A lion cannot negociate with a zebra if they were to survive- nor can the zebra negociate anymore than the lion could. They have to play dirty to live, we do not. So, we are the true savages. Anyways, that's just WHY I disagree with this first story. Losing someone you love is still losing someone you love. It does not matter if they are human or another species. If you love them and the pass away, it hurts just as much. The only thing I can say is that losing certain relationships can hurt more than others. Losing my partner would hurt me more than losing a friend. So losing the husband can hurt more than losing a companion, but the species should not matter. If you love them, it will hurt all the same. One last thing I have learned from my 17 years of life (I'm not a wise elder, but I've been through a lot more than the average teen has- I say average, but not all. Many of my friends I've met have been through worse than me) is that you cannot feel a certain amount of pain or joy without feeling the opposite. I felt little joy when I was younger, so I couldn't feel the opposite amount of pain just yet. When I met my partner, I felt the most joy I could imagen, but being kicked out of the placement and being separated has put me in more pain than I would ever have felt if I were to have no met my partner. So, the sister has not felt the same amount of pain from what we know. So, all she can do is try to understand with all the pain she's learned so far. Anyways, that's just how I see it. The comment sections are for opinions and feelings, not just facts. We will all see this differently through different experiences. I just wanted to share mine to shed light on some other ways of viewing it. If you've been through a similar part of life as I have or are feeling like self-exiting from your own life, you can get through this. I care for you all, please be kind to everyone and everything, and that kindness has a good chance of being returned.

Everyone deals with death different. I know I’m a crazy cat lady and idgaf. But a little harsh. Being so rude to the sister for grieving the loss of her dog. Yes the sister can discuss how that makes her feel but to act like she shouldn’t feel her feeling of loss is just wrong. I’ve got a kitten that is my world and if anything happened to her I’d be crushed. If someone told me that her loss was nothing compared to the loss of their husband I’d be upset as well. Yes 2 completely different type of loss but doesn’t change how I feel. After several miscarriages this kitten is like a child to me and I’ve formed a bond with her. Don’t under estimate the love people have for their fur babies.

Story 4: Op you're not the jerk and I agree that your wife cheated on you. But! Due how things started in your Marriage and you two followed your religion and your parents raised you, neither of you got the chance to explore the world after reaching 18 before you both decided to marry. You both got married way too soon. Your wife maybe have been in the closet till Rose showed up. I'm a Christian and my religion was never shoved down my throat growing up. I went to Church, but I explored after 18 and I didn't marry till 31. I am not dismissing what Rose selfishly did, but I am also blaming your parents and Church for pushing that tradition on you both. Religion shouldn't be used to tell our children how to be. I learned to love the sinner, but dislike the sin and not to judge because in the end that is God job. Do your best to be your best everyday. That is what I will be teaching my daughter. To read his word and know what he expects, but to allow my daughter to make mistakes. To grow and be who she is meant to be with God's word. In the end you can only hope you raised the to go the light path and not into the darkness.

1st story, yes it's stupid but it's a sign of how screwed up the world has gotten. I can guarantee that this isn't an isolated incident. In our world today it's considered more acceptable to abuse a child then abuse a dog. Story 4, all i can say is "dear penthouse forum". You need to lay down the law with this woman. Either she's with you, you're with BOTH of them, or she's kicked to the curb. It's another sign of the times that there are people who will defend the behavior of the wife and say "She should be allowed to explore her sexuality!"...no she shouldn't, she's married. The only "exploration" she should be allowed to do is with her husband's permission and only if he's present and active.

The sister/friend was still grieving after I think a year or two? And the OP told her friend that she she should get over it because it was “just an animal” and that, her grief wasn’t as bad as OP’s since OP had lost a baby. Safe to say the OP got flames in her comments.

Uh, first story: OP ITJ, but in a ESH (Everyone Sucks Here) way INCLUDING the narrator. Pets are family, and it deeply hurts when they're lost. It really does feel like OP is diminishing their sister's loss here, because they actually are comparable. Sister is also a a jerk, but only for trying to get OP to share in the grieving. That's going beyond tacky. Who drags someone to gravesites constantly? Let OP grieve in their own way and be supportive. Narrator: "One is a living breathing person...and the other is a dog." Seriously dude, GFY for that comment.

I agree. While losing a pet is not the exact same as losing a husband, they are comparable. In Germany that is not allowed).

Any pet is, by nature, a temporary family member. When you get a pet, there is a built-in time limit that you know going into it. With a spouse, it's normally a life-long commitment. When it gets cut short, it hits a helluva lot harder, because of the time you COULD HAVE had together still. With a pet, you mourn the little amount of time you could have had together, otherwise you're deluding yourself. With a spouse, you are mourning the rest of your life that is now uncertain. When a pet dies, most people will grieve for awhile... Then get a new one. It takes a helluva lot longer to get a new spouse - partly because they not only have to choose to do so, but once again BE chosen by another person. Also, some of OP's words suggest she and her husband had kids. If that's true, then the sister is the only jerk. Losing a family pet is NOT the same as losing a parent - and as the surviving parent, dealing with those is NOT the same.

Personally, while losing a husband is definitely a bigger deal, I feel like telling her off at least the way she did was still kinda her being a jerk. Dogs are wonderful things, and losing one, especially as they are put down right in front of you with nothing to heal the reason it is being put down. I just feel like she was just being innocently insensitive, seeing that they both lost someone big in their lives, but not the actual worth of the two.

Yes, but at least, the sister should understand that grieving is also a very personal process and that she can't understand what his sister is going through just because she has experienced a loss as well. She is quite insensitive in this way.

Story #1: I am gonna start by saying sorry for your loss. The OP was wrong for saying what she did. Grief is grief I don’t care what anyone says. I lost my mom recently and I am broken. additionally, I lost the family dog, sometime around middle school that’s along time ago for me and I am still broken from that too. It feels the same if you love them with everything you have. The OP should have just said how she wants to greave instead of saying what she said. The OP’s grief does not excuse her from being offensive in this case. FYI, OP a dog will be the only thing that will love you unconditionally besides your parents, they love deeper than ppl, even though the dog can’t read to the kids, it can support them while they read out loud. Also, a dog will take care of you when u sick in other ways, mine wake me up to take a drink when I am sick, the cuddle all around me, they even sit with me when u have to get up and use the bathroom during sickness. You are a dog’s world but only a piece of a husbands world js. Fast forward a few months, when everyone is avoiding the OP because she is still so deep in her grief that they want to protect their peace from her grief record on repeat. What then? The OPs sister is the only person that truly would’ve been there for the OP and understood. One thing I have learned about ppl, is at some point they will stop feeling sorry for you and expect you to move forward regardless if you are ready or not especially if they don’t feel the same as you. I do not think the OP is a jerk but she owe her sister a massive apology.
@LEG4CYGD
@LEG4CYGD Жыл бұрын
Story 1: honestly, I wouldn't compare these deaths like that, but it isn't easy to forget a dog by just getting another. And the claims the OP made are pretty wrong in my opinion, yes, a dog can't make soup for you when youre sick, but a dog can be loving. A dog can love a person depending on how you treat them. So overall, yes the sister is a jerk, but I understand how hard losing a dog is. And a dog lives less than another person so it's best to take best care of a dog as possible. But the sister shouldn't be comparing those 2. And losing a husband can be bad, but you can always get another one, just won't be as equal as getting a new dog is. And you never know, it could be someone who you can't trust as much. But still pretty sad to know the sisters dog is gone and so is the OPs husband. Hope they're feeling better I'd say

My dog is absolutely my world. It would be, personally, on the same level as losing my boyfriend or parents. My dog is my child, that’s how i view him. I care for him, i treat him like he is my child. He is my entire world. that being said, you can not compare a loss for one person to another persons loss. But to say that the dog is just an animal is harsh and very cruel. Many folks view pets as members of family and treat them as such.

Story 1: To the people who think the loss of a dog is even remotely comparable to losing a family member, let alone your life partner, I would call you furries but that would be insulting to furries. Story 4: OP needs to give up on his marriage, his wife is clearly not in love with him. This is a messed up situation caused by religion in which OP was an unfortunate victim. Likely, the wife is a lesbian but she never figured that out and was forced into marriage way too young due to their religious upbringing. And now that she finally has the freedom to properly explore who she really is, this is the outcome. Be warned, religion destroys everything.

Just because it's an animal doesn't mean it can't love you back. You can get a new dog, but to be honest.....you can get a new husband too. But it's not the same if it's not that person you lost.
